
            Pumpkin king Jack Skellington (speaking voice Chris Sarandon, singing Danny Elfman), an elegantly attenuated skeleton, has delivered another scary Halloween. But he receives the adulation of Halloweentown with no enthusiasm -- something is missing from Jack's life and he's tired of doing the same old Halloween thing year after year. The missing something might well be Sally (Catherine O'Hara), an animated rag doll who yearns for Jack, but he doesn't notice. (Sally was created by Halloweentown's evil scientist (William Hickey), who keeps her locked up except when she knocks him out by slipping deadly nightshade in his soup.)After pondering his ennui in a cemetery (disturbing Sally, who's replenishing her supply of deadly nightshade), Jack takes his ghostly dog Zero for a walk in the woods. They come upon a strange circle of trees, each with a door representing a holiday. Jack opens the Christmas door and they're sucked in, landing in Christmastown. Jack is curious about everything he sees there, but finds it all delightful and wants to be part of it.Back in Halloweentown Jack calls a town meeting, where he describes what he saw in Christmastown. His people don't seem very impressed, so to draw them in, he makes some elements of Christmas -- including "Sandy Claws" (Edward Ivory) -- sound scary. Then he announces that they're taking over Christmas and starts assigning jobs. The evil scientist must whip up some reindeer, Halloweentown's top trick-or-treaters are to kidnap Sandy Claws, and Sally's task is to make Jack a red Santa suit. She tries to tell him that co-opting Christmas is a terrible idea, but he's too wrapped up in his enthusiasm to listen.The three trick-or-treaters return triumphantly with the Easter Bunny; Jack sends them back and eventually they bring him Sandy Claws (who surprises Jack by having hands rather than claws). Jack directs the trick-or-treaters to take Sandy Claws away and make him comfortable, but they give him to Oogie Boogie (Ken Page) instead.Meanwhile, Sally has produced a red suit (without a hat, so Jack steals Sandy's) and the evil scientist's skeletal reindeer are hitched to a sleigh full of creepy toys. Sally tries to sabotage his Christmas Eve delivery by adding fog juice to the town well, and it almost works. But the spectral dog Zero, who happens to have a glowing nose, comes to the rescue. Sally deduces that only Sandy Claws will be able to help Jack now, and sneaks into Oogie Boogie's lair in an effort to free him.Jack sets off in his sleigh, but he doesn't really get Christmas -- his idea of a keen gift for a small child is a shrunken head or a toy duck with sharp teeth that chases its owner -- so he spreads terror and mayhem at every house he visits. He ends up being blown up out of the sky by the terrified populace. Realizing both his mistake and his desire to be the best pumpkin king he can be, he goes back to Halloweentown to find Sandy Claws and set Christmas right.He surprises Oogie Boogie, frees Sally and Sandy Claws, and unravels Oogie Boogie in a decisive final showdown. Santa Claus scolds Jack about trying to take over a holiday that isn't his, and then sets about magically saving Christmas. Jack and Sally return to town just as Santa Claus flies over and offers the Halloweentownsfolk a bit of Christmas magic: their first snowfall. Jack and Sally share a tender moment in the cemetery, realizing they were always meant to be together.

Mikey and Nicky


            Chance Grovner walked out on his family over twenty years ago. Since then he has become a hobo, riding the rails all over the country. Periodically he sent postcards to his family in Pennsylvania. Now it is Christmas and Chance decides to visit his son, who now lives in Salt Lake City. His hobo friends try to dissuade him, pointing out that a hobo can go anywhere but home again.Charlie Grovner is a police officer and a widower, with two children to raise. His girlfriend, nurse Laurie, is thinking of accepting a lucrative job offer in San Francisco. What she really wants is to marry Charlie but he is not ready to take that step. Charlie asks his children, Kathy and Bobby, what they want for Christmas but they are evasive. When he arrives at work, he is dismayed that his request for the entire day off on Christmas is denied. The best he is offered is half a day. He also learns that he is expected to play Santa Claus for the children in the local hospital.Before going to the police station to see Charlie, Chance stops at the YMCA for a shower. The desk clerk notices his shabby attire and is dismissive. Chance reprimands him and gets cleaned up, wearing the new shirt he bought especially for the occasion. At the police station, the officer on duty is also dismissive, assuming Chance is there to bail his son out of jail. He is startled when Chance tells him his son is an officer.Charlie is at the hospital visiting Laurie when the call comes that his father is waiting for him at the police station. He takes so long to arrive that Chance is on the verge of leaving. He orders his father into the car and takes off toward the mission. Chance explains how he visited their old neighborhood some time earlier and learned that Charlie had moved. Charlie tells him it is too late for a reconciliation and asks why he chose to come now. Chance explains that he only wanted to spend Christmas with them and meet his grandchildren. As he gets out of the car at the mission, he reminds Charlie that there won't be many more Christmases.Laurie is furious and demands that Charlie let his father stay. He thinks it over and decides she is right. He goes to the mission but his father has left. Charlie then goes to the railway yard. He finds Chance and tells him he can stay one night. The children are in bed when they get home, but Charlie carries his sleeping son into Kathy's room so Chance can have his bed.The children are fascinated with their grandfather. Charlie warns them that he is an old man and will not be able to do anything strenuous. He accompanies them to Bobby's hockey game. Later the family goes to choose a tree. Bobby tells Chance that he told his father that Chance has to be there for the tree decorating. Chance wants to pay for the tree but Charlie overrules him.Chance goes to the basement to see his son's woodworking equipment. This is something Charlie does in his spare time. He wishes he could quit the police force and be a full-time woodworker. Chance sees the postcards he sent that Charlie saved, giving him hope that he and his son might reconcile after all.Over breakfast in a diner, Charlie asks Chance why he walked out on him and his mother. Chance was a salesman for a sporting business. He spent each week on the road. But the business he worked for fell victim to the big-box stores. Chance was so discouraged and felt like such a failure that he left. Charlie doesn't find this acceptable.Bobby and Kathy confide what they want for Christmas to Chance. Kathy wants a piano; she was taking lessons when her mother died. Bobby wants a puppy. Chance begins working on a surprise gift for Charlie, using the woodworking equipment in the basement. He is horrified to learn that he is expected to play Santa Claus for the hospitalized children. Laurie talks him into it.The children receive the gifts they asked for and Charlie goes to work. As a surprise, Chance has invited his hobo friends to dinner. Each of them prepares a special dish. Chance tells Laurie that she should marry his son. Laurie replies that whatever they decide to do is their business, not his. The children begin begging Chance to stay but he is adamant about leaving the next morning. He and his friends plan to spend the winter in California, where it is warm.The gift Chance made for Charlie is a wood-burned map of the United States, with all the places Chance has visited marked. He remarks that he will say goodbye now, as he will be gone before they wake up. Charlie asks Laurie if she has made up her mind about the San Francisco job. She has not, but he warns her that if she leaves he will follow her.The next morning, true to his word, Chance is gone. Charlie goes after him and finds him ready to climb into an empty freight car. He refuses when Charlie asks him to stay, saying he is too restless to spend a long time in one place. Charlie says he can leave whenever he wants but he realizes how much he loves and needs his father. At last Chance agrees and they start for home.
