The Front Page


            The narrator (Stanley Jones) tells of an event that once threatened the existence of the entire human race. It occurred in "the most seemingly innocent and unlikely of places", Skid Row, in New York. Three teenage girls (Michelle Weeks, Tisha Campbell-Martin, and Tichina Arnold) appear throughout the film as a Motown-singing Greek chorus. They set the scene at the unassuming Mushnick's Flower Shop ("Little Shop of Horrors").Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis), the meek, clumsy employee of Mr. Mushnick (Vincent Gardenia), lives a dreary life among the other unfortunate residents of Skid Row ("Skid Row/Downtown"). Taken in by Mushnick as a young orphan, Seymour lives in a tiny room below the flower shop and is treated fairly poorly by his employer. The light of his life is his co-worker, Audrey (Ellen Greene), a fragile, battered woman stuck in an abusive relationship. The flower shop is making virtually no money, and Mr. Mushnick is on the verge of closing it for good when Audrey mentions the strange and interesting new plant Seymour has been developing, and suggests that if it is properly advertised, it might attract more business. Seymour presents the plant, a large bud surrounded by layers of leaves. Mushnick is pleasantly surprised when customers begin flocking in after seeing the little plant in the window. Seymour has no idea what kind of plant it is, but explains how he got it ("Da Doo"): While he was shopping for odd new plants, his hobby, a solar eclipse occurred. After daylight returned, the strange plant seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Seymour bought it for cheap and brought it home to examine. He shyly admits that he named it "Audrey II."The shop is doing record business until the plant begins to wither. Seymour frantically tries to nurse it back to health, though water, sunlight, fertilizer, and minerals have done no good ("Grow For Me"). When he pricks his finger on a rose thorn and draws blood, Audrey II responds vigorously. Seymour realizes what it lives on, and reluctantly gives it a few drops. Audrey II has a dramatic growth spurt and business picks up, with Seymour becoming a local celebrity ("Some Fun Now"). He does not reveal the secret behind the plant's health.Audrey's boyfriend, Orin Scrivello (Steve Martin), is a sadistic dentist with a leather jacket, motorcycle, and ducktail haircut. He adores his profession because of the constant opportunities to inflict pain on others ("Dentist!"). He enhances his pleasure through his habit of huffing nitrous oxide, or "giggle gas", for a euphoric high. Seymour and Mushnick are concerned, as Audrey often comes to work with injuries or a black eye. Orin arrives at the shop one night to pick up Audrey, and Seymour sees first hand how roughly he treats her. Audrey, meanwhile, secretly dreams of an idyllic suburban life with Seymour ("Somewhere That's Green"), but is too frightened to leave Orin.Seymour angrily paces around the empty shop at night, venting his frustrations to Audrey II, who is now roughly the size of an armchair. To Seymour's great surprise, Audrey II responds with a human voice (Levi Stubbs) and demands more food. Knowing that the plant can no longer live on mere droplets of blood (partially because it is too big, and partially because Seymour is now weak and anemic from feeding the plant from his bleeding fingers), Seymour is reluctant to provide it with bigger portions. The smooth-talking Audrey II promises Seymour money, fame, and the girl of his dreams if he continues to nourish it with human blood ("Feed Me (Git It)"). Seymour initially refuses to murder for the benefit of Audrey II, reasoning that he doesn't know anyone "who deserves to get chopped up and fed to a hungry plant." Audrey II directs him to the window, where he sees Orin assaulting Audrey across the street. Filled with rage, Seymour agrees to bring back a specific meal for the plant.The next day, Seymour goes to Orin's office with a gun in his coat pocket. The patient before him, Arthur Denton (Bill Murray) is a gleeful masochist who frustrates Orin by actually enjoying the oral torture he receives. After Denton's departure, Orin drags Seymour into his office to get the sadistic fix he had been craving. Though he wants to spare Audrey further pain and has promised Audrey II fresh blood, Seymour is terrified of shooting Orin. Conveniently, Orin dons his special gas mask, which provides him with constant nitrous oxide and increases his sadistic pleasure. The mask malfunctions and Seymour watches his nemesis asphyxiate before his eyes. Seymour drags the body back to the flower shop, where he reluctantly chops it up with an axe and feeds it piece by piece to Audrey II.Seymour is understandably shaken by the incident, and sees the police speaking with Audrey the next morning about Orin's disappearance. He tries to comfort Audrey, telling her that she had deserved a better man all along. While Audrey admits that her low self-esteem kept her tied to Orin, she feels partially responsible for his fate because she had been silently wishing him out of her life. Though he does not reveal the truth about what became of Orin, Seymour promises to stand by Audrey no matter what ("Suddenly Seymour").Invigorated from finally winning Audrey's love, Seymour returns to the flower shop. He is confronted by Mushnick, who had seen Seymour dismembering Orin's body the night before. Mushnick assumes that Seymour's devotion to Audrey caused him to murder the cruel dentist, but does not suspect that Audrey II is involved, and knows nothing of its grisly diet. Mushnick leads Seymour upstairs at gunpoint, planning to turn him in to the police. He then offers Seymour a proposition: Seymour leaves town forever, and Mushnick keeps the money-making plant. As Audrey II coaxes Seymour to sacrifice Mushnick to clear his own name ("Suppertime"), Seymour nervously backs Mushnick into the gaping maw of the hungry plant, killing two birds with one stone.With Audrey II grown to enormous proportions, Seymour's celebrity increases ("The Meek Shall Inherit"). However, he is miserable and terrified of the plant's eating habits getting out of hand. He begins to fend off the media and turn down large sums of money, feeling guilty for his part in the secret deaths of Audrey II's meals. He finally puts his foot down, denying the plant any further feedings. He and Audrey plan to run away that night and get married, escaping Skid Row forever. However, he buckles when Audrey II seemingly agrees to accept some meat from the butcher instead of a human corpse. Seymour falls for the ruse and leaves the shop. The plant, with its fully mobile tendrils, uses the phone to call Audrey's apartment across the street, begging for water. Audrey, in her wedding dress, comes to oblige, and is amazed that the huge plant can talk. As she fetches the watering can, the plant wraps its vines around her legs and drags her into its mouth ("Suppertime II").Seymour returns just in time to save Audrey from being devoured. Outside the shop, he explains how dangerous the plant is, and how he only kept it because he thought Audrey would cease to like him if he were no longer rich and famous. Audrey assures Seymour that she loved him from the moment she met him, and still does. They are interrupted by a salesman (James Belushi) who shares with Seymour his idea of collecting trimmings from the plant and marketing miniature Audrey IIs all over the country. Seymour deducts that this was the plant's plan all along: It was an alien that came to earth during the solar eclipse and was bent on world domination. He rushes back into the shop for a final showdown with Audrey II. The plant thwarts Seymour's efforts at killing it, and begins to taunt him as its branches destroy the building and new buds begin to bloom ("Mean Green Mother from Outer Space"). Emerging from the rubble, Seymour grabs a live electric wire and touches it to Audrey II's vine, electrocuting it and causing it to explode into nothing.Seymour and Audrey are married and arrive at their suburban dream home, just as Audrey had imagined. As they enter the front door, a baby Audrey II plant is seen in their garden, a tiny smile on its pod.

The Big Racket


            Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) and his wife Joanna (Hope Lange) vacation in Hawaii. They return to New York City, where Paul works as an architect.Joanna and their daughter Carol Anne (Kathleen Tolan) shop for groceries at D'Agostino's. Three hooligans (one played by Jeff Goldblum) are wreaking havoc in the supermarket. They catch Joanna's address after she asks that her groceries be delivered. They follow her to the apartment, burst in and trash the apartment. They search for money but find only $7. The hooligans then rape Carol and savagely beat Joanna, escaping scot-free.Paul's son-in-law Jack Toby (Steven Keats) calls to tell him only that Joanna and Carol are in the hospital. After waiting impatiently, Paul is told by a doctor that his daughter is okay and that she was sedated and put to bed, but his wife has died. Devastated, he is told by police that the likelihood of catching the criminals is small since his wife is dead and his daughter, the only witness, traumatized from her ordeal of being raped, cannot speak. That night, a frustrated Paul goes out for a walk and quickly encounters a mugger who attempts to rob him with a gun. Carrying a sock full of quarters, Paul swings it at the would-be-mugger and flees, narrowly escaping from being shot.The next day, Paul's boss gives him an extended business vacation to Tucson, Arizona to meet a client, Ames Jainchill (Stuart Margolin), who shows him the ropes. Paul witnesses a mock gunfight at Old Tucson, a reconstructed Western frontier town used as a movie set. At a gun club, Ames is impressed when Paul shoots near bulls-eye accuracy. He reveals that he was a "CO" (conscientious objector) during the Korean War who served his country as a combat medic. Ames drops him at the airport, slipping a little going-away present into Paul's bag.Back in New York, Paul visits Jack who tells him that his daughter is catatonic and will likely never recover. At home, Paul opens his suitcase and the gift box that Ames left him to find a nickel-plated .32 Colt Police Positive revolver. He pockets the gun and takes a stroll that night. While walking alone in Riverside Park, Paul almost immediately encounters a mugger, a doped-up ex-convict named Thomas Leroy Marston who attempts to rob him at gunpoint with a .38 Smith & Wesson Model 36 revolver. Paul shoots him with his own revolver, killing him.Shocked that he just killed a human being, Paul runs home and throws up. But his vigilantism continues the following night, when he guns down three black men (one with an afro is played by an uncredited Denzel Washington) who are robbing a defenseless old man in a vacant alley.A few nights later, two muggers see Paul on a subway, holding a bag of groceries. They attempt to rob him at knife-point but Paul shoots them both with the revolver. Paul again gets away.Another night later, Paul is sitting in a sleazy 8th Avenue coffee shop surrounded by prostitutes and assorted street people. He pays his bill to the cashier purposely revealing a wallet full of cash. He leaves followed by two black thugs, named George and Joseph, who have taken the bait. Yet again a robbery attempt is made in a subway tunnel. Paul shoots one but the other manages to stab him in his shoulder before he gets shot as well. As a wounded Paul stumbles off, the one who stabbed him gets away mortally wounded, dying at a hospital.Police Lt. Frank Ochoa (Vincent Gardenia) investigates the vigilante killings. His department narrows a list to men who have had a family member recently killed by muggers and who are war veterans. The public, meanwhile, is happy that somebody is doing something about crime.Lt. Ochoa soon suspects Paul. He is about to make an arrest when the District Attorney (Fred J. Scollay) intervenes and tells Ochoa to "let him loose" in another city instead. Ochoa doesn't like the idea, but relents.In the meantime, Paul has his daughter committed to a mental hospital in upstate New Hampshire where she will remain catatonic, possibly for life. After returning to New York, Paul hides his .32 gun in a hidden drawer in his office while adjusting (and possibly enjoying) committing murder against muggers to "clean up the city". When Paul invites Jack over for dinner, Jack cannot understand Paul's sudden and happy mood.(Note: The three muggers who murdered Paul's wife and assaulted his daughter are never seen again in the movie, so their fate is left ambiguous.)One evening, Lt. Ochoa anonymously phones Paul at his office to tip him off that the police are watching him, hoping to provoke a reaction or slip up from Paul. When Paul is briefly detained by the police after leaving his office, they do not find any gun on him and allow him to continue on his way.Aware that the police are starting to catch on to him, Paul gives them the slip by sneaking out of his apartment building through a backdoor service entrance. He goes to his office to retrieve his gun and then goes out looking for more would-be muggers where he is confronted by three street gang members in Central Park who try to mug him. Paul shoots two of them before he is wounded in his right leg by a third mugger who is armed with a .45 caliber M1911A1 pistol. Despite his wound, Paul chases the third mugger through the park, the streets, and to an industrial warehouse area where the third mugger gets away as Paul attempts to take aim at him, only to fall to the ground.Hospitalized, Paul is confronted by Ochoa after a sympathetic policeman finds Paul's revolver near the latest crime scene and gives it to the detective. Ochoa makes Paul promise to leave New York, permanently in exchange to avoid prosecution for the vigilante killings. Paul replies, "By sundown?"In the final scene, set one week later. Paul arrives in Chicago Union Station by train. Being greeted by a company representative, he notices a group of hoodlums harassing a woman. He excuses himself and helps the woman. The hoodlums make obscene gestures, but Kersey points his right hand like a gun and smiles... suggesting that his vigilantism will resume sooner or later.

            The film opens with a grand view of Los Angeles, with a news broadcast in the background detailing an increase in crime in the city. The overview of the city goes until the end of the opening credits where we zoom in on the new house of Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) where the maid, Rosario (Silvana Gallardo), is preparing dinner. He seems to have picked up the pieces of his life to move on, as his girlfriend is KABC news/radio reporter Geri Nichols (Jill Ireland) and they both go and pick up Carol from the hospital and spend the day with her. Paul talks to the doctor, who says that despite her traumatic catatonia, she has begun to speak again. Her husband, Jack Toby, though not seen or mentioned, presumably divorced Carol. Paul, Geri, and Carol spend the rest of the afternoon at a carnival, where Paul offers to buy ice cream while the girls look around. While waiting in line for some ice cream, he gets mugged and his dollar bill is stolen by five gang members. At first Paul does not mind but realizes they also took his wallet. Paul manages to catch up with one of them (Jiver), but Jiver exclaims that he was not the one who took the wallet.Geri heads to do an interview with the senator while Carol and Paul go on a boat ride. The same five muggers who stole Kersey's wallet arrive at his house determined to kill him. The thugs break in, tightly bind, and gag, and then gang rape Rosario. Paul arrives home with Carol, only to get beaten unconscious when he walks in the door. Rosario tries to call the police, but the thugs hear the sound and quickly kill Rosario by bashing her head in. They then take Carol to their hideout, where one of the muggers rapes her. After the attack, she runs away from the thugs and jumps from a window, becoming impaled on the railings below.Geri arrives to the house as Paul regains consciousness and the police arrive. Lt. Mankewicz (Ben Frank) is one of the first on the scene, asking Paul about the identification of the muggers because the description was "a little vague". A short time later, Paul learns about the death of his daughter and is sent to the station to ID her. Later, Mankewicz asks Paul to view some photos at the station to rejog his memory since Paul is the only witness. Paul declines by saying: "it won't do any good."The next scene is at a funeral where Paul and Geri both attend. That night, Paul pulls out a .32 caliber semi-automatic handgun he kept hidden in his closet, changes clothing, and rents a low-rent apartment in the inner city as his forward base of operations. After wondering around most of the night through the rough part of downtown L.A. Paul returns to his own house. Geri arrives the next morning and lets herself in, where she nearly discovers Paul's gun laying on a dresser. Paul quickly gets up and hides it. After Geri leaves, he calls a locksmith to have the locks on his house changed.The next night, Paul spots one of the muggers, Stomper, and follows him into an abandoned hotel building as a drug deal is about to be made between his partner and two buyers. Kersey tries to be quiet as he can, but the others notice his presence when he knocks over a can. Kersey kills Stomper's partner, then orders the other two out of the room where he kills Stomper.The following evening, as he is patrolling the streets, Paul hears a scream coming from an underground parking garage where a man and a woman are being assaulted by four muggers. One of the muggers is Jiver, whom Kersey chased down the alley the day of his daughter's death. Paul opens fire on the muggers, killing two of them. Jiver is wounded, but he and the fourth mugger manage to get away. Taking a .45 caliber pistol off one of the dead muggers, Paul follows the trail of blood, and manages to wound and kill Jiver at a warehouse across the street. Paul flees before the police arrive.The L.A. police quickly hear about the murders, as does the NY Police Department. Detective Frank Ochoa (Vincent Gardenia) is called by the LAPD to help. The Police Commissioner (Anthony Francoisa) thinks the vigilante killings may be done by Kersey again. Fearing that Kersey, when caught, will reveal that they let him go instead of prosecuting him, the NYPD sends Inspector Frank Ochoa to make sure that does not happen. Ochoa meets with Lt. Mankewicz, who suspects that Frank is hiding something.That night, Ochoa breaks into Geri's apartment where he meets Geri and tells her about Paul's past and recent vigilante spree. But when Geri confronts Paul, he quickly denies it, ascribing the tale to Ochoa's imagination. Paul drives Geri to work the next morning, where Ochoa is waiting. In order to keep tabs on Paul, Ochoa calls Mankiewicz and asks him to park his car near Paul's apartment (but he doesn't tell Mankiewicz about following Kersey himself).Another night later, Ochoa follows an unknowing Kersey from his house to his low-rent apartment and from there to a local square where Kersey spots the three remaining gang members who attacked him: Cutter (Laurence Fishburne), Punkcut (E. Lamont Johnson), and Nirvana (Thomas F. Duffy). Kersey follows the trio on a bus to an abandoned park, where a major drug deal goes down. Ochoa follows Kersey and sees him from a distance hiding in a bush, but decides to help Paul after detecting a spotlight heading in his direction. Ochoa warns Paul with a shot by shooting a gang member who tries to shoot Paul. Paul runs behind a tree as the gang members grab their guns and fire back. Ochoa gets shot by a hail of gunfire, but Paul manages to kill Cutter (who vainly tries to shield his head with a boom box) with a bullet through the face. Punkcut is also wounded by a gunshot to the chest, as is another gang member. Paul also shoots and kills the getaway driver and seller of the firearms, who plummets off a cliff to a fiery doom below. The final mugger, Nirvana, gets away. Paul goes over to Ochoa and asks him why he saved his life. Ochoa responds he had to side with Paul against the criminals, and tells Paul to kill Nirvana for him. Ochoa dies as the police arrive, and Paul escapes into the night. The police get the name of Ochoa's killer from a badly injured Punkcut by inflicting pain, who succumbs to his injuries and dies.A few days later, Nirvana (who's real name is revealed to be Charles Wilson) is found by the police hiding out in an apartment. Paul, monitoring the police radio frequency from an acquired radio scanner, tries to get to Nirvana to kill him before the police do. But in the apartment building hallway, Paul narrowly misses his opportunity for a kill when he gets slashed on the arm by Nirvana during a chase. Nirvana runs outside when he sees the police approaching and gets tasered, but with no effect due to an influence of PCP. He is finally arrested after stabbing several officers.Tried and found criminally insane, Charles 'Nirvana' Wilson is sent to McLarren State Hospital. Paul comes along with Geri to the hospital where she is interviewing Charles Wilson's doctor. The visit allows Paul to secretly steal a facility ID card and a white doctor's lab coat. Despite his plans for revenge to kill the last surviving thug who assaulted him, Paul has lunch with Geri the next day and proposes to her. Geri accepts.The night they plan to go to Mexico for their wedding, Paul uses his altered doctor ID and stolen lab coat to gain access to the hospital and confronts Wilson in the hospital meeting room. They have a violent fight and Kersey is stabbed repeatedly by Wilson with a scalpel. But when Wilson slams Kersey up against an electrical device, Kersey ducks the oncoming punch. Wilson's hand smashes through the machine and Kersey turns the power up, electrocuting Wilson. Donald Kay (Charles Cyphers), the head orderly on duty, witnesses Wilson's death, but sympathizes with Kersey and gives him three minutes to escape from the hospital before sounding the alarm.Geri goes to his apartment later that night and finds the scanned copy of the stolen ID. She realizes that Paul is actually the vigilante after she hears a report of Wilson's death on the radio. She puts the paper and the engagement ring on the table and drives off. Paul arrives home minutes later to an empty apartment.Five months later, Paul is at his office speaking to his clients about a party in celebration of a new architectural design. His boss Elliott Cass (Michael Prince) invites him to a party that very evening, and when Paul is asked if he's free, he answers: "What else would I be doing?" The movie ends with gunshots heard on L.A.'s skid row, implying that Paul will continue his vigilante spree undisturbed.
    

Death Wish II


            Pilot Noah Dugan is sleeping when two creditors burst in and threaten him. They tell him he has 24 hours to come up with $5,000 and a week to come up with an unspecified remainder. They rough him up and leave.Dugan goes out looking for work, but nobody will hire him. In desperation, he goes to a friend, Stoney, who tells him about a cargo run. Dugan asks what kind of plane. Stoney is evasive at first, then finally shows him the plane -- an old B-29 into which animals are being loaded. Dugan refuses, saying animals and planes don't mix. Trying to convince Dugan to fly the run, Stoney introduces him to Bernadette LaFleur, a missionary with an orphanage who is taking the animals to a remote tropical island, where she plans to show the natives how to raise them. Bernadette asks how soon they can leave. Dugan says never, and tells her to get her money back from Stoney -- fast. Stoney says the money is gone. Bernadette threatens to take the matter to the police if necessary.Dugan finally tells Stoney he'll take the run if he gets a certified check for $3,000 in Honolulu. As Dugan explores the plane, Petey, a duck belonging to Julie, one of the orphans, escapes to the back of the plane. Dugan goes after him and ends up dropping out the back. Seeing the plane's condition, Dugan heads off, but stops short when he sees the creditors drive up. Saying he'll fly the cargo run, Dugan asks Stoney to stall them.The kids load the rest of the animals, among them a bull, Brutus. Dugan has trouble getting Brutus on the plane until Bobby, another of the kids, coaxes him on board. Dugan has the kids leave, while Julie and Bobby stay behind to say goodbye to Petey and Brutus, respectively. Evading the creditors, Dugan packs his bags. Bernadette says goodbye to Julie and Bobby and she and Dugan head for the plane. Once on board, Dugan starts the engines. Uneasy about how Dugan will treat the animals, Bobby sneaks on board. Julie follows him.As Dugan takes off, he lights a cigar while Bernadette plays classical music in a tape player. Dugan complains about the music, and Bernadette, who he calls "Bernie," says she'll let stop playing the music if he stops smoking. Dugan reluctantly agrees, then discovers that the plane's autopilot isn't working. Bernie offers to help, but Dugan is doubtful since her experience is limited to a few hours flying a Cessna. As soon as she takes control, however, the plane pitches nose down. Just then, Petey comes out, followed by the kids. Dugan goes back with the kids to check on the animals, but is knocked unconscious when Brutus kicks him.The kids report the problem to Bernie, but just then Dugan returns. He settles in to fly the plane through the rest of the night while the kids sleep in the back. The next morning, Bernie and Dugan see the sunrise off the left wing, not behind them as expected. Dugan checks the instruments, which indicate that they're still on the heading he wanted to fly. When he removes Bernie's tape player, however, he discovers that the player had affected the compass and they're now off course. He says they'll have to go as far as they can before they run out of fuel. Bernie asks if they can turn back, but Dugan says they've gone too far.As the engines begin to flame out, Bobby spots an island off to the left. The engines die out completely just before they reach the island, forcing Dugan to ditch in the water, with the plane coming to a sudden stop on the beach. Dugan and Bernie build a corral out of the vegetation and move the animals from the plane into the corral. Meanwhile, two Japanese sailors, who noticed the plane when it crashed, begin making plans to intercept the new arrivals.As Bobby leads Brutus to the corral, he suddenly runs off. Bobby and Julie chase after him, finally catching up to him near a river. When they make their way back, they see the Japanese sailors' hut and tell Dugan and Bernie. Dugan says the hut must have been a World War II military outpost. Bernie says the sailors look like they're still dressed for the war. Dugan says they may not have heard that it ended. Bernie suggests going down and talking to them, but Dugan vetoes the idea, saying they should go back to the plane instead.Back in the plane, the group sees the two sailors come out. The sailors demand that the group surrender, but both their rifles malfunction and a grenade that one of them throws turns out to be a dud. Dugan, Bernie, Bobby, and Julie chase them back into the underbrush. Bernie says she still wants to make friends with them, but Dugan still doesn't trust them.As Julie and Bobby prepare for bed, Julie says that Dugan was brave, but Bobby says he still doesn't like him. Bernie goes to relieve Dugan, apologizing for her behavior. Dugan also apologizes. Bernie says she'd like for them to try to get along better.The next morning, Bernie is nowhere to be found, so Dugan goes after her while the kids go swimming. Bernie makes her way to the sailors' camp, finding it empty. As she explores their hut, they return. She tells them that World War II is over. They settle down and prepare a meal, which they share with her. Meanwhile, Dugan comes across the compound. When he overhears Bernie saying, "No more, I've had enough," and hears the soldiers laughing, he charges the hut, breaking a wall and upsetting the meal. The soldiers attack Dugan, but Bernie shouts at them to stop. She introduces her friends to Dugan as Commander Hiro and Cleveland from the Japanese Navy. Cleveland, who is fluent in English, says that his mom visited the United States in 1924 and her favorite city was Cleveland, his namesake. Bernie says the sailors have been stranded on the island for 35 years.As Bernie and Dugan make their way back to the plane, he lectures her for leaving. Later that night, while the kids are sleeping, he tries to apologize to her. When she doesn't listen, he asks more forcefully and they go outside to talk. Meanwhile, not having actually fallen asleep, Bobby and Julie sneak to the front of the plane and overhear them talking. Dugan tells Bernie he cares about her and they share a kiss. Bobby asks Julie how Bernie can like Dugan, and she says Dugan is really nice. Bobby remains unconvinced.The next day, the sailors see the group attempting to drag a rubber fuel tank from the plane. Cleveland says the tank will make a lousy raft, and Hiro comes up with an idea to use the plane as a boat. Bobby likes the idea, but Dugan has his doubts. Cleveland asks him if he plans to stay until someone finds him, and he says he will, even if it's a couple of days or weeks. Cleveland then asks him, "How about 35 years?"With the sailors' help, Dugan, Bernie, Bobby, and Julie change the plane into a boat. Bernie works on a sail, but when she asks for a large piece of cloth to put in the center, the sailors offer their Japanese flag. Bernie adds the flag at the top.Bobby and Julie start to load the animals, but Dugan says they can't bring them on board. This angers Bobby, who says that Julie kept saying that Dugan was nice, but his refusal to board the animals now proves otherwise. Julie gets upset, and Dugan finally relents, allowing the animals to be loaded. Walking around to the other side of the plane, Dugan sees Bernie painting the name "Noah's Ark" on the side and tells her he hates the name "Noah," but says that otherwise the name is fine.As the group prepares to depart the island, they can't find any sign of Cleveland or Hiro. When they can't wait any longer, they launch the boat, but just as they get into the water Cleveland and Hiro appear on the beach. They jump in the water and swim toward the boat. Dugan asks Cleveland and Hiro why they were late. Just then, they see several explosions on the hillside -- following orders they were given during the war, the sailors made sure they left nothing when they departed.The group sails toward Hawaii. As they sail, Bernie gets an idea about sending a message. Dugan ties a note to Petey and sends him off, but the duck heads in the wrong direction. Cleveland suggests they try fishing, but he and Hiro are unable to catch anything. Meanwhile, Brutus refuses to eat. Bobby tries to give him some milk, but Dugan stops him, saying the milk is their food supply and he doesn't want it being used to feed the animals. Annoyed, Bobby takes his milk ration and gives it to Brutus.That night, Bobby gets an idea to use a lantern to draw fish -- something he and a friend would do at the orphanage. The light draws the fish, but it also draws a shark, which scares the fish away. Using the last of their caught fish, Dugan, Hiro, and Cleveland go after the shark, but it gets away. Wanting to get a closer look, Bobby gets too close to the edge, slips, and falls in the water. Dugan jumps in after him and barely manages to get him back on board before the shark returns. As Dugan jumps on board, Bernie fires a gun at the shark, killing it. Bobby thanks Dugan for saving his life, but Dugan berates him, saying he nearly got both of them killed. Dugan orders Cleveland to take Bobby downstairs and get him changed.Below deck, Dugan asks the rest of the group to leave him and Bobby alone. He apologizes to Bobby. Bobby also apologizes for his behavior, and they agree to be friends.The next day, a storm hits, destroying part of the wooden decks on the boat but leaving it otherwise intact. After the storm clears, Brutus, who has fallen down, is lying on his side. Bobby asks if Brutus can be saved, but Bernie says there's nothing that can be done. Dugan pulls out a gun to put Brutus out of his misery, but Bobby refuses to let him be shot. Dugan asks Bobby what his dad would have done. Bobby says his dad left him at the orphanage and didn't care. Dugan says that now Bobby is surrounded by people who *do* care. Hiro takes the gun from Dugan, sits down next to Bobby, and gently talks to him in Japanese. Resigned to Brutus' fate, Bobby says a tearful goodbye to him, then nods to Hiro.As Hiro prepares to shoot Brutus, the group hears a whistle from a Coast Guard cutter, which has located them. As the cutter tows them toward shore, Brutus is shown to have fully recovered, while Dugan marries Bernie and they hug the kids.
