
            It is the early 1930s, and a small funeral service is underway at the gravesite of Essie May Loggins. In attendance are two female acquaintances and Addie (Tatum O'Neal), the 9-year-old daughter of the deceased. Arriving late for the service is Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal), a suave-looking younger man. It becomes clear that Essie May was a somewhat "loose" woman, and that Moses was one of her lovers. One of the women at the funeral says she notices a resemblance between Moses and Addie, and wonders if Moses is not the girl's father. Moses denies this, but the women persist in questioning him. When they find out that he is heading in the direction of Missouri, they convince Moses to deliver Addie to her aunt and uncle in St. Joseph. Moses is frustrated with this responsibility, but he sees an opportunity in it as well. Moses is a con man, and he uses his own knowledge of Essie May's affairs to blackmail a local man; he takes Addie in to briefly meet the man and then suggests that he may have fathered the child and that Moses could press the issue now that Essie May is dead. Instead of taking responsibility for the child, the man pays Moses $200 to keep quiet, and Moses uses the $200 to buy himself a new car, as well as a train ticket to St. Joseph for Addie. However, Addie is no innocent child. She overhears the conversation that Moses has with his victim, and she refuses to be used in a con game without any compensation: she demands the $200 that Moses acquired, arguing that it's rightfully her money. Moses is furious that Addie is sharp enough to figure out what was going on, and afraid that she might actually blow the whistle on him, he agrees to get her $200 back. After sending a telegram to Addie's relatives saying that she will be delayed, Moses takes Addie with him while he goes to make back her hush money.Addie learns that Moses' hustle is posing as a Bible salesman. He looks in the obituary section of the local newspaper, goes to the homes of men who have recently passed away, and informs their widows that their husbands ordered a Bible with the woman's name printed on the inside. While Moses is talking to a woman named Pearl, Addie finds material in the car with which he printed her name on the inside of the Bible. Touched that her deceased husband intended to buy her a gift, Pearl gives Moses the money for the Bible, and Moses' con is clear to Addie.Moze (as Addie refers to him) is annoyed with having to take Addie along with him on the road, and she reveals herself to be wise beyond her years at every turn. She carries a cigar box with her containing her only possessions in the world, other than her radio. Addie herself thinks that Moze is her father, and she reminds him of this several times, but he denies it consistently. Moze dislikes Addie being involved in his con, but he soon learns that she is an asset when he attempts to hustle a widowed woman into buying a Bible and suddenly a lawman appears in the house, questioning Moze about his business and his identity. Addie saves the day by rushing up to the house and charming the policeman, and she even ups the price of the Bible on the spur of the moment. In another instance, Addie takes pity on a woman who appears at her door surrounded by young children; Addie refuses to allow Moze to take the woman's money and leaves the Bible for her anyway. Moze is angry with Addie for interfering in his affairs, but Addie understands now that she is partners with Moze, and their con turns into profitable business. Moze also teaches Addie different con techniques, such as how to talk sales clerks out of money, and Addie's charm works well for them.Things take a different turn when Moze and Addie visit a traveling carnival and Moze acquires a girlfriend named Trixie Delight (Madeline Kahn). Trixie appears in the carnival as a 'harem girl', and there is a suggestion that she does a little more than just dance for the male patrons. Moze informs Addie that Trixie and her personal maid, Imogene (P.J. Johnson), will be traveling with them from now on, and Addie is furious to have their relationship interrupted by Trixie, who is a loud, obnoxious woman. Addie becomes sullen and ignores Trixie until she has a frank conversation with the girl; Trixie admits that she can never hold onto a man for very long, and that if Addie is patient, Moze will soon tire of her and she will move on.Addie seems to accept this proposition, until Trixie talks Moze into buying a very expensive new car; Addie looks in her cigar box and finds all of their money gone. This is the final straw for Addie, and she immediately plots Trixie's downfall. Enlisting the harried Imogene to help her, the two of them arrange for Trixie to be caught in a compromising position with the desk clerk of the hotel where they are staying. For her part in the scheme, Addie gives Imogene enough money to get back home to her family, and after Moze catches Trixie in bed with the clerk, he immediately collects Addie and abandons Trixie.From here, Addie and Moze seize another opportunity: while staying at a small hotel in a rural area, Addie notices a bootlegger conducting business quietly. His customers approach him and he retrieves their liquor from a small shed in back of the hotel. Addie and Moze get the idea to climb into the shed and steal some of the liquor, then sell it back to the bootlegger. Although their scheme works, they do not know that they have been found out by a man lurking in the shadows nearby. As they leave the hotel in their car, they are pursued by a sheriff who takes them into custody. While at the sheriff's station, Moze and Addie are questioned relentlessly. Although he knows what they did, he cannot prove anything--Addie has hidden the telltale cash they made in her hat. The sheriff intends to keep Addie and Moze locked up until he can pin something on them, so Addie spontaneously comes up with a plan; she steals back the keys to their car and urges Moze to make a break for it. Together they rush outside and make a quick getaway. Pursued by the sheriff and his men, they manage to make it across the border into Missouri, where the sheriff has no jurisdiction and cannot arrest them. Realizing that their car will make them conspicuous, Moze spots a dilapidated old truck outside a farm and rouses the inhabitants of the shabby farmhouse. Making up a reason, he informs them that he needs to swap vehicles and that he will give them the brand new car in an even trade for their broken down truck. The men refuse to trade, saying that the new car is no use to them since it cannot haul anything, so Moze offers to wrestle for it. The men can't resist the challenge and send their best 'wrassler', Leroy (Randy Quaid), to take on Moze. Moze quickly takes the match, however, by playing dirty, and he 'wins' the right to drive off in the beat-up truck.Now that the two of them are in Missouri, the issue comes up about Addie's original destination: her aunt & uncle's house. Moze instead suggests that this is no longer necessary; they will conduct business as usual, as they are partners. Both of them are happy with this decision, as they don't really want to be separated.Moze quickly sets up an opportunity for a very big score involving a wealthy gentleman, and he tells Addie that this will net them enough money to finally get out of the con business. Moze sets out to meet their mark, with Addie to follow later, but he is intercepted by the sheriff from Kansas and his men; while they cannot arrest Moze for his crime in Kansas, they are only interested in revenge, and they chase Moze down and beat him severely. Addie knows something is wrong when Moze is nowhere to be found, and she finds him beaten and bloodied, lying in a stairwell.Now that violence has found him, Moze has a change of heart about having Addie along in this lifestyle; he will take her to live with her aunt and uncle after all. Addie promises that she will not cry about separating from Moze, but when he drops her off at the house, she is less than enthused about living there. Addie's aunt (Rose-Mary Rumbley), is a flighty woman who treats Addie like the child she is, and Addie is put off by her cloying and overly cheerful attitude.Meanwhile, Moze has set off up the road in the broken down truck, which stalls out and leaves him sitting there. He is down on his luck, but even more, he is heartbroken about Addie leaving. Suddenly he looks up into his rear view mirror and sees her, off in the distance, running toward the truck. Although he is glad to see her, he puts on a stern face and stares her down, telling her "I told you, I don't want you riding with me no more." Addie is hurt at first, but then she stares back at him and says "You still owe me $200." Moze is flustered, and the truck begins to drift away while he isn't looking. Addie shrieks in warning, and they both run after it. Together they climb inside and drive off to a new destination.

            Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau), an alcoholic and former minor-league baseball player, is recruited by a city councilman and attorney who filed a lawsuit against an ultra-competitive Southern California Little League which excluded the least skilled athletes (including his son) from playing. In order to settle the lawsuit, the league agrees to add an additional team - the Bears - which is composed of the worst players in the whole Little League. Buttermaker becomes the coach of the unlikely team, which includes (among others) a near-sighted pitcher, an overweight catcher, a foul-mouthed shortstop with a Napoleon complex, an outfielder who dreams of emulating his idol Hank Aaron, and a motley collection of other "talent". Shunned by the more competitive teams (and competitive parents), the Bears are the outsiders. They play their opening game, and do not even record an out, with the score at 26 to 0 before Buttermaker forfeits the game.Realizing the team is nearly hopeless, he recruits a couple of unlikely prospects: First up, is sharp-tongued Amanda Whurlizer (Tatum O'Neal), a skilled pitcher (trained by Buttermaker when she was younger) who is the 12-year-old daughter of one of Buttermaker's ex-girlfriends. At first, she tries to convince Buttermaker that she has given up baseball, but then she reveals that she had been practicing "on the sly". Before agreeing to join the team, Amanda makes a number of outlandish demands (such as imported jeans, modeling school, ballet lessons, etc.) as conditions for joining. Upon hearing her demands, Buttermaker asks, "Who do you think you are, Catfish Hunter?" Amanda responds by asking, "Who's he?" Rounding out the team, Buttermaker recruits the "best athlete in the area," who also happens to be the local cigarette-smoking, loan-sharking, Harley-Davidson-riding troublemaker, Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley). With Whurlizer and Leak on board, the team starts gaining more confidence, and the Bears start winning games.Eventually, the unlikely Bears make it to the championship game opposite the top-notch Yankees, who are coached by aggressive, competitive Roy Turner (Vic Morrow). As the game progresses, tensions are ratcheted up as Buttermaker and Turner engage in shouting matches, directing their players to become increasingly more ruthless and competitive against each other, going as far as fighting, spiking on slide, or the batter getting hit on purpose.The turnaround point of the game comes after a heated exchange between Turner's son (and Yankees pitcher) Joey (Brandon Cruz) and the Bears at-bat catcher Engelberg (Gary Lee Cavagnaro). Turner orders his son to walk Engelberg, the only Bears hitter he cannot overcome, despite Joey's wish to give it a try. In response, Joey intentionally throws a wild beanball nearly striking Engelberg in the head. Horrified, Turner goes to the mound and slaps his son. On the next pitch, Engelberg hits a routine ground ball back to Joey who exacts revenge against his father by holding the ball until Engelberg has an inside the park home run. Joey then leaves the game dropping the ball at his father's feet.Buttermaker - realizing that he has become as competitive as Turner - puts the benchwarmers on the field, thus giving everyone a chance to play. In spite of this, the finish-up brings up the best team-play from the Bears. After loading the bases with smart tactics (two walks and a bunt) they nearly recover a four run difference, with the last runner getting taken out at the last moment.Having narrowly lost the game at 7 to 6, Buttermaker gives the team free rein of his beer cooler. Although they did not win the championship, they have the satisfaction of having come a long way. The condescending Yankees congratulate the Bears (in a sarcastic tone implying that they really not mean it) telling them that although they are still not that good, they have "guts." Tanner, the shortstop, replies by telling the Yankees where they can put their trophy. The Bears cheer and Lupus overcomes his chronic shyness enough to yell "Wait 'til next year!", then they spray their beers all over each other. The movie ends with a field celebration by the Bears that makes it look as if they won the game.

            Velvet Brown, who gained fame in her native England for winning the Grand National horse race at age 12, gains custody of her niece, Sarah Brown, after the girl's parents die in a tragic car accident. Raised in Arizona, eleven-year-old Sarah moves to England to live with Velvet and her longtime boyfriend, John Seaton. Miserable, Sarah makes several unsuccessful attempts to run away. One day, she sneaks out of the house at dawn, provoking Velvet's panic. After calling the police, Velvet finds her niece in the fields, riding her beloved horse, "The Pie." Furious, Velvet warns that Sarah will be sent to boarding school if she runs away again.Over the next few months, Velvet laments her difficulty with the girl, who prefers to be left alone in her grief. Eventually, Sarah explains that her parents often traveled and left her alone, making her feel abandoned. She notes the irony that she is now alive because her parents left her behind to go on another trip. Observing that Sarah is passionate about horse riding, Velvet asks the girl to help care for The Pie.Sometime later, The Pie is officially "retired from stud" and Velvet takes Sarah to see the birth of his last foal. Smitten, Sarah watches the young horse grow and fantasizes about owning it. She works odd jobs around the house to earn enough money, but the foal's owner sells it. Later that day, Velvet and John surprise Sarah by revealing that they purchased the foal as a gift. Sarah names the horse "Arizona Pie."Over the next few years, Sarah and Arizona Pie grow and ride together and Sarah becomes obsessed with competing in the Olympics. Now a teenager, Sarah enters a local equestrian competition, hoping to impress the Olympic trainer, Captain John "J. R." Johnson. Sarah's smitten classmate, Alan Wilson, takes photographs, but she does not notice his attention because she is too disappointed about coming in second place.Later, Alan defends Sarah when his friends taunt her, calling her a "stuck up little cow." Alan refuses to join the boys when they chase Sarah and Arizona Pie with their car, and cause her to fall. The boys crash the vehicle and die in a fiery explosion. Despite the tragedy and her injury, Sarah is more determined than ever to make the Olympic team. Sarah cannot return Alan's affection, although she likes him as a friend.One day, Sarah asks Velvet why her aunt gave up riding, and Velvet mentions losing her nerve at the time her first marriage failed. Later, Sarah receives an invitation from Captain Johnson, inviting her to train as a possible candidate for the Olympic team. Impressed with Arizona Pie, Johnson informs Sarah she should start from scratch with her training, but warns that he is a tough coach, and expensive.Back home, Velvet and John promise to pay for Sarah's training, but privately struggle to find the means. Velvet later learns that John has been writing erotic novels under the pseudonym "Jack Delacroix" to earn money. During training, Sarah is lonely and worries that she is unable to make friends. One day, John tells Sarah that Velvet miscarried during her former marriage, when she fell from The Pie. Afterwards, she was unable to have children. Sometime later, Sarah is selected as an alternate on the British team for an upcoming U.S. competition in Ledyard, Massachusetts.On the airplane, "Gold Dust," the horse belonging to Sarah's teammate, Roger Peacock, becomes uncontrollable during severe turbulence, and they are forced to kill the horse. After the team lands, Scott Saunders, captain of the U.S. team, gives his condolences and impresses Sarah.The next day, Captain Johnson announces that Roger will ride Arizona Pie in the competition. Sarah objects, but the Captain reminds her that Arizona Pie is a team horse, and she has no say in the matter. That evening, as Sarah pouts in the stables, Johnson explains how important it is to sacrifice one's "vanity" for the good of the team. Johnson convinces Sarah to go to the dance given by their American hosts; there, Scott asks her to dance. At the competition, the British team loses.When Sarah returns home, she finds one of John's erotic novel manuscripts and expresses her disgust to Velvet, only to learn that the publications are paying for her training. A few months later, Sarah is selected for the Olympic team. At the age of eighteen, she is the youngest member to represent the British equestrian team.At the Olympics, Sarah learns that Johnson chose her to compete over one of her older teammates. Sarah runs into Scott in the Olympic village, tells him the good news, and they celebrate by spending the day together. During the competition, teammate Roger Peacock and his horse sustain injuries during the cross-country event and must withdraw, leaving Sarah solely responsible for scoring enough points to take the team into the finals. Velvet and John nervously watch the competition on television back in England. As Sarah runs through the course, she falls and injures her shoulder, but jumps back on the horse and completes the race in record time, earning enough points to send the team into the finals. Afterward, Sarah falls to the ground in excruciating pain. Sarah is later diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder and the doctor is unsure if she will be able to compete in the finals, which is several days away.That evening, Velvet urges Sarah not to push herself if it is too dangerous; the girl's health is more important than winning. On the day of the finals, Sarah begs Captain Johnson to allow her to compete in the jumping event, not wanting the whole team to be disqualified. Johnson reluctantly agrees, on condition that he will remove her from the event if her teammates do not place among the top three. When the team performs well, Johnson lets Sarah ride, and she earns the British team a Gold medal.Several months later, Velvet opines that Sarah never returned to England, but instead ran off to marry Scott Saunders. While Velvet walks on the beach, John arrives with a package from Sarah. Inside is Sarah's Gold medal with a letter. Sarah wishes to share her prize with Velvet because her aunt was disqualified from the Grand National for being female and underage. As Velvet cries, Sarah arrives unexpectedly with Scott, introducing Velvet and John as her "parents."

            Director Jules Dassin, once shunned by Hollywood for being accused
of "un-American activities," had already worked for nearly thirty
years in Europe before making this Canadian drama about an elderly
painter and a sixteen-year-old teen. Richard Burton delivers as a
convincingly up-tight artist abandoned by his muse for the last ten
years. After he meets Sarah (Tatum O'Neal on the wan from her 1973
Oscar as "Best Supporting Actress"), the muse begins to stir once
more. The two disparate souls meet at a soft-core film (Sarah's
friends dared her into seeing the flic), and an uneasy, non-sexual
relationship starts. But even though the artist discovers that his
muse is not totally defunct, that is a difficult trade-off for dealing

            In the 1950's, young Carrie Staley witnesses a murder while riding on a bus in Brooklyn, New York. Her father sends her to spend the summer with his relatives in Missouri. Landy, Bea, and Lucy Bretthorst welcome her warmly. She and Lucy are the same age and quickly become friends.Landys sister, Grace Bretthorst Jones, is coming home after spending seventeen years in the state mental hospital. She was hit by a car and seriously injured while crossing the road to pick flowers. While her physical injuries healed, she was left brain-damaged and unable to function normally. Eventually her husband Dan divorced her. Landy felt she had improved enough to come home, so he petitioned the court for her release. He, his daughter Lucy, and Carrie go to collect her. It is a long drive and they spend the night camping along the road.The hospital director is very much against Grace's release. She believes that Grace is not normal and won"t be able to cope with the outside world. Landy's only contact with her in years has been by telephone. He brushes aside the director's doubts and talks about the welcome home party he and Bea have planned to re-introduce Grace to the townspeople. If they see her, they will realize she is fine. Just as they leave, the director recommends that Grace be kept away from the children.Lucy enthusiastically greets her aunt but Grace's response is lukewarm. At the party, she is obviously ill-at-ease. Her eagerness to see Dan again fades when she learns not only is he married again, but his wife Ella Dean is pregnant. Dan takes Grace aside and explains that the doctors told him she would never get better. He thought he had no choice but to divorce her. Grace embraces him as if he were still her husband. It is as if she hasn't understood anything he said. Heavy rain falls nearly every day, causing great concern about flooding. Landy owns a bakery downtown and gives away free bread to the black families who had to evacuate their homes. This doesn''t set well with his pastor, Rev. Potter, who wonders aloud why he has never received anything free from the bakery. Landy is also caring for an injured fox who was found among the rubbish behind the shop.Carrie and Lucy sneak out at night to attend revival services at the black church. Lucy intends to convert even though she is already a Baptist. She loves the style of worship and how everyone is so friendly.Grace's family tries hard to make her feel at home. Landy offers her a job at the bakery and Bea invites her to go shopping. After she sews an exquisite dress for Lucy's doll, the girls ask her to make one for Carrie. A boy from the nearby military academy has asked her to a dance. Grace tells them the story of her romance with Dan and how she never loved anyone but him. She was just seventeen when they married and the accident happened on their honeymoon. The heavy rains continue. Landy assists with placing sandbags in case the river overflows. Ella Dean, hearing that Grace likes to sew, brings her some quilt pieces. Grace shuts the door in her face and drops the pieces on the floor, showing her contempt. People are now starting to feel uneasy about Grace. But Landy won't hear of sending her back to the hospital.Before dawn one morning, Grace and Lucy sneak out to go fishing. They find a rowboat and Lucy insists on borrowing it. But a storm blows up and Lucy cannot handle the oars. She and Grace plunge into the water to swim for shore. But only Grace makes it. Landy arrives and retrieves his daughter's body. At Lucy's funeral, several girls gather around her coffin to add tokens of friendship. Carrie puts in her kaleidoscope, which was a favorite of Lucy's. Bea and Landy are inconsolable. Grace sits apart from them and no one speaks to her. At home, she exhibits bizarre behavior by eating a peach cobbler with her fingers and smearing it on her face. She asks Landy if she will be sent back to the hospital. He says it wouldn't change anything. But Bea is furious and she wants Grace out of her house.Carrie wants to stay on but Bea says it is best if she goes home. She promises to make arrangements as soon as the weather clears. But conditions only worsen. Main Street is in danger of being washed away and Landy is called to help with the sandbags. That same night, Bea invites several of Lucy's friends over for a slumber party with Carrie. But while the girls are sleeping, Grace wanders the house with a pair of scissors. She tries to cut Carrie's hair and the girls awake screaming. Bea sends Carrie for Landy, who locks Grace in a room by nailing the door shut. Their guests are sent home. Landy asks Carrie to sleep with Bea while he stands guard over Grace. But he dozes off and she somehow manages to escape, after trashing the room.Several men, including Dan and Landy, start a search. Landy begs that Grace not be hurt. Bea spots Grace on the roof of Dan's house, where Ella Dean lies sleeping. She angrily orders her to come down. They go into the Jones's living room, where Grace stabs Bea in the chest. A neighbor woman runs in and assures Bea that she is going to be all right. After Bea is taken to the hospital, Ella Dean wakes up and realizes she is in labor. But there is no one about. She makes her way to the front porch, calling for help, and Grace responds. She leads Ella Dean into the house and assists her in giving birth to a baby girl. A grateful Ella refers to the baby as little Grace.The next day dawns clear. Landy is shown hammering together a cage on the back of his pickup truck. When it is ready, several men unlock the garage door and lead Grace out. She doesn't seem to know what is happening. But when Landy tries to force her into the cage, she begins screaming and begging him not to send her back. Carrie comes out with a suitcase. Landy tells her he has arranged for a woman he knows to take care of her until it is time to leave for the airport. Her father will meet her at the other end. She begs to go with him all the way to the mental hospital. But taking Grace back is something Landy has to do alone.As they drive away, the street is lined with people. Rev. Potter tells Landy that he is a good man. Grace is silent, hunched over so she will not see the stares. Landy drops Carrie off at the woman's house. As a parting gift, he returns the kaleidoscope she had tucked into Lucy's coffin. He tells her Lucy would want her to keep it.Here a much-older Carrie is heard telling the rest of the story. Landy is shown releasing the now-healed fox back into the wild. Bea did not survive the loss of her daughter or her injury. Carrie wrote to Landy several times but he didn't reply. Years later, she heard from one of Lucy's friends that he left town one day and no one ever saw him again. Carrie never heard anything more about Grace. Here the scene switches to Grace standing alone in the moonlight next to Landy's truck, stretching her arms out and smiling. A gunshot is heard. The last scene shows Landy sitting next to a river, his shotgun at his side. Obviously Grace never made it back to the hospital.
