The Looming Tower


            When it comes to hard-bitten crime cinema, Jacques Audiard has few equals in Europe, and his violent, gripping prison drama A Prophet shows him extending his range with unimpeachable command. The story of a gauche young inmate who rises through the criminal ranks to become a formidable player, A Prophet works both as hard-edged, painstaking detailed social realism and as a compelling genre entertainment.The only thing that might hamper commercial prospects is a labyrinthine, sometimes perplexing narrative, but otherwise the film to be released in France in August - should have the same international appeal as last years Cannes crime hit Gomorrah. Its unapologetically testosterone-laden tenor will give the film a resonance way beyond the international art-house constituency that embraced Audiards last film, The Beat That My Heart Skipped. Expect this stimulating film also to be much discussed in the French media in terms of its topical backgrounds, the national prison system and Frances Islamic population.Set largely within prison walls and featuring an almost exclusively male and non-professional cast, the film details the prison career of Malik el Djebena (newcomer Rahim), a 19-year-old man of North African origin but estranged from the Muslim community. Sentenced to six years on an unspecified charge, Malik is chosen by Cesar Luciani (Arestrup), feared kingpin of the prisons reigning Corsican gang, to kill a prisoner named Reyeb (Yacoubi) who initially offers Malik drugs in exchange for sex. Malik commits the bloody murder, and thanks to Lucianis near-total control of the prisons internal workings - gets off scot-free. This makes him a lieutenant in the prisons Corsican gang, initially entrusted only with menial duties and disparaged as an Arab outsider.Haunted by visions of a ghostly Reyeb, and determined to get on, the illiterate Malik not only learns to read, but teaches himself Corsican, surreptitiously learning the ins and outs of Lucianis business. Another inmate, Ryad (Bencherif), becomes Maliks friend, later his ally on the outside. When Luciani arranges periods of leave for Malik, entrusting him with various criminal missions, Malik takes the opportunity to do some business of his own, setting up a drugs trade with Ryads aid. Life gets increasingly dangerous for Malik, both inside and outside prison walls, but he seems partly through Reyebs benign, unearthly influence - to lead a charmed life. Powers of prophecy are attributed to him after surviving a bizarre car crash an incident presaged in an enigmatic fantasy sequence.Immensely detailed both in its accounts of prison life and of the politics of organized crime, A Prophet comes across as both a realistic film and a deeply cynical one: it is extremely matter-of-fact in depicting a dog-eat-dog world.             It is early 20th century, in the 1930s. The movie opens with a truce after internecine fighting between two Arab chieftains, namely Emir Nesib and Sultan Amar. The peace pact entails that Sultan Amar hand over his two sons, Auda and Saleh in custody of Emir Nesib for fifteen years.
Meanwhile, the American Company - Texas Oil is exploring for oil in Arabia. A Texas Oil officer approaches Emir Nesib about the prospects of rigging crude oil and changing the lot of his people by the immense riches gained by oil wealth. The liberal and progressive Emir gives his permission for oil rigging to American company and breaks the peace accord reached with Sultan Amar that the Yellow Belt will remain a No man land bordering their fiefdoms. This violation of the pact perturbed Sultan Amar who is conservative and does not approve of the exploitation of their natural resources by Americans. In order to appease the matter, Emir Nesib sends a delegation headed by prince Auda to convince Sultan Amar (his father) not to oppose oil rigging operations in the Yellow Belt as it brings wealth to them and they can build hospitals, schools and other infrastructure bringing prosperity to their region. But the orthodox and conservative courtiers of Sultan Amar would not listen to the soft spoken Prince Auda.In the meanwhile, prince Saleh asserts to aggressively joining his father, Sultan Amar and kills his two companions on the way while he was fleeing to his father's camp. But Saleh was intercepted by Emir Nesib's son Tariq who ruthlessly shoots Saleh dead. Other contending factions from Arabia join forces with Sultan Amar to avenge Saleh's killing and oust the American oil company. In the midst of this mayhem, prince Auda made his best effort to appease both sides but to no avail. He loves his wife Leyla who is daughter of Emir Nesib and he wants to strike a balance between his rigid father and liberal progressive father in law.Amid all this fighting the situation turns ugly when one of the overlords envisaging a detente between prince Auda and Sultan Amar, shoots from a distance and kills the Sultan. Heavy fighting erupts between the two camps and the warlord was about to kill prince Auda when a slave girl kills the warlord by stabbing him in the back. Prince Auda survives all wounds and ordeals. Auda returns to Emir Nesib who treated him respectably and prince Auda suggests his father in law to act as an chair in the board of Texas Oil overseeing the interests of their country. While princess Leyla brings happy news of her pregnancy to Auda who is thrilled and humbled.

            The young man Jean is hired as an assistant to the aging photographer Stéphane. Stéphane has abandoned commercial photography and is consumed by a project to take life-size pictures of his daughter Marie using the antiquated technique of daguerreotype. The project involves arduous exposure times of more than an hour, during which Marie must be fixed by a frame not to blur the picture.As Jean works in the old house of Stéphane and Marie, he learns that Stéphane's wife, Denise, committed suicide after some illness and seems to haunt the house. Marie takes care of the greenhouse on the estate and dreams of becoming a professional gardener. She and Jean become lovers and Jean encourages her to leave her father and take up a position at the Botanical Gardens of Toulouse that she has been offered.One day as Jean is having lunch in a restaurant, he is introduced to the real estate agent Thomas, who tries to convince Stéphane to sell the old house for a development project. Stéphane furiously rejects the offer, even though it involves a substantial sum.One night the workshop is haunted by the ghost of Denise and Marie falls down the stairs and remains lifeless on the floor. Jean rushes her to hospital in his car, but she is thrown out of the car in an accident. When Jean looks for her body, he finds her conscious and seemingly well. They return to the house. Stéphane has assumed that Marie is dead and is overcome by grief. Jean convinces Marie to let Stéphane believe so, so that he can sell the house and Marie can move to Toulouse.Marie moves in with Jean while Jean tries to find the deed to the house so that it can be sold. Eventually Stéphane again refuses to sell the house and Jean decides to forge his signature on a proxy. Thomas rejects the proxy and requires to see Stéphane in person. Back at the house Stéphane is overtaken by his grief and shoots himself. When the real estate agent arrives, he finds Jean with Stéphane's gun and blood on his hands. Stéphane shoots Thomas before he can alert anyone. He and Marie leave for Toulouse. On the way, they stop at a small church and engage in a kind of marriage ceremony in the empty church. The ceremony is interrupted by the priest who tells Jean that the church is closed and asks him to leave. Marie is nowhere to be seen and it becomes apparent that her entire presence after the accident has been a delusion.
