Murder 101: If Wishes Were Horses

The Silence


            A group of young American adults, Chris (Jesse McCartney), his girlfriend Natalie (Olivia Taylor Dudley), and their mutual friend Amanda (Devin Kelley), are traveling across Europe. They stop in Kiev, Ukraine to visit Chris's brother, Paul (Jonathan Sadowski) before heading on to Moscow where Chris intends to propose to Natalie.After a night on the town, Paul suggests that they go on an "extreme tour" and "off the beaten path" of the abandoned town of Prypiat which sits in the shadow of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, site of the infamous nuclear disaster. Paul briefly explains that on April 26, 1986, Reactor #4 at the plant exploded after suffering a massive meltdown. The explosion took place at 1:23 am while the neighboring town of Pripyat slept. Two workers were killed instantly. The fires were put out a few hours later, but the damage was done as radiation from the destroyed reactor swept across the plant and the entire countryside. Nearly all of the workers and the firemen who put out the fire died from radiation poisoning within a few hours to a few days. 40 hours later, the residents of Pripyat were ordered to evacuate by the Soviet government, and most never returned; by that time, many of the residents had suffered varying degrees of radiation poisoning. (All true)The group is joined by backpacking couple, a Norwegian named Zoe (Ingrid Bolso Berdal) and her Australian boyfriend named Michael (Nathan Phillips).The six-person group is initially denied access to Prypiat by the Ukrainian military because of the lingering radiation emiting from the closed down plant, but their Ukrain tour guide, Uri (Dimitri Diatchenko) takes them by van in through an unmanned, forested check point. On the way, they stop at a river where they discover a large, mutated fish with large teeth dead at the side of the river. As the group returns to the van, a number of similar fish are seen below the murky water attacking a piece of beef jerky Uri threw earlier on.They spend a few hours exploring the abandoned city, which was home to Chernobyl workers and their families before they were forced to evacuate overnight. When Uri takes them into an apartment building, he hears a noise. When he slowly goes to investigate, a bear comes out from an adjacent room and runs away. Frightened, the group leaves the building. Uri comments on the incident, telling the group he has been coming to Chernobyl for five years to give private tours and has always seen a dog or wolves but never a bear.As the group prepares to leave, Uri finds the wires in his van have been chewed through and tries to radio for help to no avail. As night falls, the group begins arguing and affixing blame. Noises are heard outside and Uri goes out with a flashlight and a gun, accompanied by Chris. Shots are heard and Paul runs out to investigate, only to return with Chris whose leg has been severely mauled, seemingly by dogs who attack the van. The groups stays in the van the whole night.The next morning, Paul, Michael, and Amanda go out looking for Uri whom, according to Chris, was taken by "them" while Paul and Zoe stay behind in the van to look after the wounded Chris. They follow a trail of blood to find Uri's mutilated body in an underground complex. They take his gun and radiation Geiger counter and barely escape a group of mutant creatures (semi-human looking nomads whom are scarred by radiation poisining). They return to the van, planning to hike to the nearest checkpoint but Chris cannot move his leg. Chris and Natalie stay behind in the van while the others go to get help.The group comes across a group of modern abandoned vehicles in a parking lot and find a bus with bullet holes exiting from inside it. In the bus they also find broken guns and a bloody guard uniform. Michael finds replacement wires for the van, so they head back toward their vehicle. After being chased by mutant dogs, they reach the van by nightfall and find it ripped apart and flipped over. Natalie's camera video reveals she and Chris were taken by the mutants.They go in search of the two but end up being chased by more mutants. During their escape they find a traumatized Natalie and rescue her. When the group are out in the open, they begin to work out where another checkpoint nearby is by using a map Michael obtained during their previous escape. The group is distracted by a little girl in the distance. As they try to communicate with her Natalie is once again taken by the mutants. Paul, Michael, Amanda, and Zoe attempt to find her, but in the process are swarmed by a horde of mutants. They run to a fallout shelter, but Michael is captured. The three continue on, finding Chris's engagement ring for Natalie but no sign of Chris himself. They are again attacked by mutants and as they begin to climb a ladder to the way out a congregation of mutants pull Zoe back down, forcing Amanda and Paul to leave her behind as they escape.Paul and Amanda continue on through the fallout shelter which comes out in Chernobyl power plant itself. As they navigate around the #4 reactor, they find Natalie dead. They continue on, only to also become poisoned with radiation as their skin begins to blister. They exit the reactor and are confronted by Ukrainian military personnel. Blinded from radiation poisoning, Paul is shot dead when he approaches the soldiers. Amanda is taken away as the rest of the Ukrainian soldiers begin to sweep the area shooting and killing various mutants.Amanda passes out and awakens on a gurney in an unknown location where several Russian and Ukrain doctors, clad in protective hazmat suits, inform her that she is in a hospital. The doctors talk amongst themselves (in Russian, so Amanda cannot understand them) and reveal that the "creatures" were escaped patients from a nearby asylum whom they have placed around Chernobyl for the past 10 years by the Russian, Ukraine and Bellarussian authorities as test subjects to test the levels of radiation effects on them. They doctors note that after conducting the sweep, all of the mutants have been killed or re-captured and the other Americans are dead. They decide Amanda, having seen the escapees, must not be allowed to leave, so they throw her into a dark isolated room. Amanda is immediately alerted as she begins to hear noises. She calls out and a group of mutants attack her.
    

Chernobyl Diaries


            Jessie is a horror writer with all-too-familiar writer's block. When her boyfriend Brian suggests a vacation to the cabin her late aunt had left her, she instead decides to head there alone. She believes it will give her the inspiration she lacks for her writing.Early on, before even arriving at the cabin, the townspeople give Jessie strange, fearful looks.George is the caretaker of the cemetery and helped Jessie's late aunt whenever and however he could. Jessie had called him to make sure the cabin was still available. It indeed was, and he took Jessie to it and promised to check in on her now and again.After cleaning the cabin up a bit, Jessie notices a decrepit, dilapidated doll lying on the floor of a closet. She places it on the shelf in the closet and goes on about her business.The doll somehow finds its way into Jessie's path, and does so many times thereafter.One day, while out on a run, Jessie comes upon a young girl humming in the woods. She looks at the girl, smiles, and then goes home. Soon, there's a knock at the door. It's the little girl. Her name is Leah and it turns out she knew Jessie's aunt well. After talking Leah into walking to the store in town with her, Jessie learns that her late aunt talked about her all the time to Leah.While in town, Jessie comes across yet another resident of the small town; Evelyn, her late aunt's nurse. She, too, looks at Jessie with a look of dreadful memories. She tries to scurry along home, but Jessie stops her, trying to find out why she's been looked at so fearfully. The nurse said very little, but mentioned that evil had something to do with her aunt's death -- not an accident, which is what the official cause had been.After yet another crossing of paths with the ugly doll, Jessie notices a tag on the back of it. It has the name of the store it was purchased at on it. She gets the address for the business and finds her way to it.The owner had been there for nearly four decades. She talks Jessie into buying a small oil-burning lamp filled with concentrated holy water. While there, Jessie asks her about the doll and inquires as to whether or not the woman remembered it.She remembered it, alright. She wished she had never taken it in or sold it. It had been purchased by a woman whose house had burned to the ground along with all occupants inside. All that had survived had been that doll. Nothing and no one else had. The conversation ended shortly thereafter as the store owner no longer considered Jessie welcome there. She couldn't get back to tending the store fast enough.Strange happening after strange happening within the cabin began to wear on Jessie. The constant appearing of the doll, the grandfather clock that would set its own time, the voice of a priest performing an exorcism, the appearance out of nowhere of a disheveled and cold, sexy siren at her door, visions of erotic embrace followed by demonic bloodlust...the list was endless.Jessie had , just before, finally called her boyfriend Brian to ask him to come to the cabin after all. He arrived the next night with a young couple in tow -- Max and Marie. They all spent the night talking, smoking joints and drinking. Jessie and Brian drift off to sleep on the couch as Max and Marie shimmy off to have some "together time." In the midst of this sexual liaison, Marie swears she saw something. Max gets up to look and finds nothing. The moment decidedly passed, he goes to take care of business while Marie sits, still shaken, on the bed.She then hears glass break and discovers a picture from the wall had fallen. Behind that picture she found news clippings. As she eagerly and wonderingly looks through them, Jessie wanders in to check on the couple.Marie shows her the clippings and Jessie's eyes light up with fear. The beautiful blonde stranger that had appeared at her door had gone missing some years before, along with a friend. An exorcism had been performed on a little girl, and a few other sordid stories. Then they hear a scream. Max was no longer anywhere to be found.They rush to wake up Brian and he insists that he will go find him; that he's probably just drunk and playing yet another prank, as he is wont to do. Shortly thereafter, they hear another scream -- Brian's. Now Jessie goes to investigate as Marie stays back at the cabin.Searching in the direction of her boyfriend's screams, she happens upon he and Max, both. They are dead. She hurriedly makes her way back to the cabin to find Marie. She had been dragged kicking and screaming to her death as well.Just as Jessie happens upon Marie, there stands Leah right behind her lifeless body. Leah is not herself, however. She's been possessed by an evil spirit. This spirit has jumped from place to place over time, it turns out. The spirit inside of Leah explains it all...Jessie, herself, had been the exorcized girl from the news clipping. The evil spirit had gone to the doll, which had then been given to Leah. The cycle had come full circle and was ready to return to what it considered it's rightful home; Jessie.Jessie was going to be no part of this plan. She fought off and killed Leah, whose small and innocent body had just the host for this spawn of Satan. But just before what seemed to be her dying breath, she thanked Jessie.Jessie grabbed her phone and called George, the caretaker, to please get there as soon as possible. While on this call, the spirit reanimated Leah and came after Jessie with a vengeance.As the evil entity, in the form of Leah, lifted and choked the life out of Jessie, she reached for the holy water-filled lamp. Just before she reached it, "Leah" extinguished the flame with a single blow. Concentrating on what filled the lamp, Jessie continued her reach.Finally within her grasp, she flung the lamp at the demon before her. The holy water did as expected and began to eat through the skin of Leah and all her body contained. Falling too close to the fireplace, she became engulfed.Screaming and flailing, she finally succumbed, fell and disintegrated.As all this unfolded, George had arrived. He cradled Jessie and walked her away from the Hell behind them.George was, after all, the caretaker.
