Shalane grew up on a parrot farm in Ramornie, a bush region on the outskirts of Grafton NSW. Born to farmers Neville and Noddy Connors, she was raised alongside hundreds of birds, horses, donkeys, rottweilers, snakes, rats, and four siblings.Having spent most of her spare time horse-riding, dancing and studying music, Shalane didn't discover the art of acting until the age of 17. She then went on to study acting at the University of Wollongong, graduating with a bachelor of Performing Arts and moving to the city.After a fruitless search for work as an actor in Sydney, Shalane fell suddenly into music after winning a songwriting comp at Tamworth Country Music Festival with her sister. They formed a touring folk act called 'Siskin River' for which she wrote and performed original music for over four years, as a lead singer, and guitarist. The band released two EP's and an Album, and enjoyed grass-roots success at major Australian music festivals including Falls Fest, Woodford, Queenscliff, Fairbridge, Festival of The Sun, and Bluesfest, to name a few.After the death of her father to cancer, and the growing struggles of self-managing a full-time touring act, 'Siskin River' disbanded and Shalane returned to Sydney in 2016 to rekindle her acting journey.
