Code Red


            It is a crisp October day at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Reds are in the World Series for the first time in 21 years; their opponent, the powerful New York Yankees. The PA announcer's voice booms over the crowd noise, broadcasting that the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by William "Dummy" Hoy. The crowd cheers, but Hoy, now 99 years old, can not hear them. In fact, William "Dummy" Hoy never heard the roar of the crowds or the congratulations of his teammates during his Major-League career. Deaf since childhood, and the first deaf baseball player to ever play Major-League baseball, Hoy played in a world of silence.
Carson, Hoy's son, uses American Sign Language to tell his dad that the crowd is cheering for him. Hoy stands and waves to the crowd, his face igniting into an incandescent smile. The crowd stands and waves their arms in the air- the deaf cheer. Hoy stands there in wonderment. A tear rolls down his cheek. Carson signs again, asking his father if he's okay. Hoy nods, yes. Then Carson signs, telling Hoy that it is time to throw out the first pitch. As Hoy throws the ball to the catcher, we follow the arc of the baseball through the air. Just as it hits the catcher's glove, we flash back to the SLAP of a rubber ball hitting the side of a red brick building...
Late 1870's
Young William Hoy plays in the schoolyard at the Ohio School for the Deaf where he is learning to be a cobbler. He repeatedly throws the ball at a specific brick and hits it with precise accuracy. He quickly moves around at every bounce. With each throw he moves back, extending the distance between himself and the wall. Again and again he hits the marked brick.
After graduating the school for the deaf, Hoy moves back to his hometown of Houcktown, Ohio where he helps his father on their farm and then opens his own shoe-repair shop. Playing baseball with the kids on the street and with amateur teams on the weekends fuels his passion for the game.
One day, while passing through the town, a pro scout notices Hoy playing. He is astounded at the accuracy of the young man's arm. After the game, the scout approaches Hoy and asks him where he learned how to throw like that and if he ever thought of playing professionally. During an awkward moment while trying to communicate, Hoy points to his ears, and shakes his head. Realizing that Hoy can not hear him, the scout produces a pen and a piece of paper and writes, "Have you ever thought of playing professionally?" Hoy's eyes light up as he smiles and nods enthusiastically.
Hoy, now in a Milwaukee uniform, is practicing with the team. Afterwards, the coach approaches Hoy and writes that he wants Hoy to play for him. Then he writes down, $55.00 a month. Hoy takes the paper and pencil and writes, $65.00 a month. The coach shakes his head and points to $55. Hoy turns and walks away leaving the coach screaming to unheard ears.
The door to the shoe-repair shop opens and the scout approaches Hoy who is busy nailing a sole to a shoe. The scout writes, "What happened?" Hoy writes, "Milwaukee bad." The scout studies
Hoy for a moment, then writes, "You go to Oshkosh, Wisconsin." Once again we see Hoy's face light up with a triumphant smile.
At the age of 24, Hoy grabs his spikes, closes his shop for good and boards a train headed for the Minor-League team in Oshkosh. His professional baseball career has begun.
Hoy faces challenges far and above those faced by a "normal" new prospect, yet despite his diminutive size (5-foot-4, 148 pounds) and his hearing disability, he intrigues the men who run the Oshkosh minor-league club with his explosive speed and powerful arm. After two years in Minor-Leagues, Hoy is signed by the Washington Senators in 1888 and leads the National League with 82 stolen bases in his rookie year. Hoy, not being able to hear the calls of the umpire, communicated with his third-base coach, who relayed the calls back to Hoy by signing. The game of baseball will never be the same.
Shy and unassuming, "Dummy" Hoy endeared himself to both teammates and fans, teaching anyone who cared to notice that talent, desire, and hard work can be transcendent. Hoy's story is truly inspirational; a story of one man overcoming the odds and in doing so leaving a mark on the great American pastime that survives today.

Life After Flash


            The story opens with Emperor Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) declaring that he will first play with, and then destroy, the Earth, using seemingly natural disasters which include earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, tornadoes, and something called "hot hail".Sometime later on Earth, New York Jets football star "Flash" Gordon (Sam J. Jones) boards a small plane. Onboard, he meets travel journalist Dale Arden (Melody Anderson). Mid-flight, the cockpit is hit by a meteorite sent by Ming and the pilots are sucked out. Flash takes control, and manages to crash land the craft in a greenhouse owned by Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol). Zarkov, who believes the disasters are being caused by an unknown source in space which is sending the moon toward the Earth, has secretly constructed a rocket ship with which he intends to investigate. Zarkov's assistant refuses to help him, so he lures Flash and Dale inside the rocket. After a struggle, the rocket launches into orbit, taking the trio through a vortex to the planet Mongo. There, they are taken prisoner.Flash, Dale and Zarkov are brought to the palace before Ming. Ming orders Dale to be prepared for his pleasure. Flash attempts to resist but is overpowered by Ming's bodyguards. Ming orders Zarkov to be reconditioned and Flash executed by lethal gas. Ming's daughter, Princess Aura (Ornella Muti), manipulates Ming's Chief Surgeon into helping her save Flash, to whom she is attracted, by having him injected with an immunity serum helps him escape from the palace.Zarkov is seemingly brainwashed by Klytus (Peter Wyngarde), the golden-masked de facto regent of Mongo and Ming's right hand man. Meanwhile, Aura and Flash flee in a shuttle to Arboria, the kingdom of Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton), Aura's lover. En route to Arboria, Aura reluctantly teaches Flash to use a telepathic communicator to contact Dale. He uses it let her know he is still alive. Dale informs Flash that she is locked in Ming's bedchamber. Encouraged by Flash, Dale escapes. Klytus dispatches Zarkov to intercept Dale, who informs Zarkov and a listening Klytus that Flash is alive. The two then escape, as Zarkov reveals he was able to resist the brainwashing process. But after fleeing the city, Dale and Zarkov are captured by Prince Vultan's (Brian Blessed) Hawkmen and taken to his kingdom, Sky City.Aura and Flash arrive at the forest moon Arboria. Aura asks Prince Barin to keep Flash safe. A distrustful Barin, who is in love with Aura, agrees not to kill Flash, but then contrives to force him to take part in a deadly ritual. Barin and Flash take turns sticking their hands into a hollow stump with a poisonous creature inside. When Barin compels Flash to take an extra turn, he pretends to be stung by the creature and begs for a quick death, using this as an opportunity to escape. Barin follows, but they are both captured by Prince Vultan's Hawkmen.Back in Mingo City, Klytus informs Ming that Flash is alive and gains Ming's authority to discover the person responsible. Aura returns alone to Mingo City only to be taken prisoner and tortured by Klytus and General Kala (Mariangela Melato), the head of Ming's secret police. They force Aura to confess to helping Flash escape, and Ming orders her to be banished to the ice moon Frigia after his wedding.Meanwhile, Flash and Barin are taken to Sky City, where Flash and Dale are briefly reunited. Flash is forced to fight Barin to the death, but Barin joins forces with Flash when he saves his life. Klytus arrives and threatens Vultan as well as everyone else for their insolence. Flash and Barin double-team up to overpower Klytus and kill him. Knowing that this will bring retribution on the Hawkmen, Vultan orders them to evacuate Sky City, leaving Barin, Flash, Dale and Zarkov behind. Ming's ship arrives shortly afterwards and he orders Barin, Zarkov and Dale to be taken aboard. Ming finds himself impressed with Flash, and offers him lordship over a subjugated Earth in exchange for fealty, as an alternative to death, which Flash refuses. Ming returns to his ship and gives the order to destroy Vultan's kingdom with Flash still on it. Flash cheats death by finding a rocket cycle in the city and escaping before Sky City is destroyed.Flash contacts Vultan, whose people have found refuge on Arboria, and they plot an attack on Mingo City. Flash pretends to attack Mingo City alone on his rocket cycle. General Kala dispatches the war rocket Ajax to bring back Flash's body, but the Hawkmen army intercepts and Flash and the Hawkmen seize control of the rocket after a fierce battle.In Mingo City, Princess Aura overpowers her guard and frees Barin and Zarkov from the execution chamber. Flash and the Hawkmen attack Mingo City in Ajax and Kala activates the city's defenses, as Ming and Dale's wedding starts. Mingo City's lightning field shield protecting the city can only be penetrated in time to save Earth by flying Ajax in to it in a suicide run. Flash volunteers to stay at the helm to ensure it is successful and allow the Hawkmen to invade the city.Just before the rocket hits, Barin manages to kill Kala then then sabotage the lightning field generators and Ajax plummets into the city's great hall where the wedding is taking place; the ship's bow impales Ming. Ming falls off the rocket nose, seriously wounded, and Flash offers to spare his life if he will stop the attack on Earth, but Ming refuses to submit. Ming attempts to use his power ring on Flash but his power falters and nothing happens. He then aims the ring at himself and is seemingly vaporized by its remaining power seconds before the counter to the destruction of the Earth reaches zero.A huge victory celebration ensues with planet Earth apparently saved and Barin is proclaimed the new ruler of Mongo. Vultan is named general of all of Mongo's armies including the Hawkmen. Thus Mongo's population can live in peace. Aura chooses to marry Barin and stand alongside him. Flash, Dale and Zarkov are asked to stay on Mongo for the time being since the vortex to Earth has been severed with Ming's demise. They all agree to stay, while Zarkov will plan on a way to get the three of them back to Earth somehow.The final shot focuses on Ming's empty power ring, as an unidentified individual picks it up. The words "The End?" fade onto the screen, followed by an echo of Ming's evil laughter.
    

Flash Gordon


            Casey Meadows (Deborah Forman) is a free-spirited young woman working as a dishwasher in an upscale restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. One day she receives a hand-delivered job offer as a driver for Brentwood Limousine Service. The company manager, Charles McBride (Howard Hesserman), is appalled at Casey's young, brash presence... and the fact that she's a woman in an all-male establishment. McBride soon learns that Mr. Witherspoon (E.G. Marshall), the company owner, personally handpicked her and offered the letter of employment. McBride reluctantly agrees to hire her, but warns her that she will be fired if she steps out of line.Casey experiences sexism and chauvinism from her fellow, (mostly older) limo drivers. While frustrated at her lack of acceptance and tolerance amongst her new co-workers, she does manage to find some kindness and support in Jeremy O'Brien (Sean McClory), an older Irish driver. Jeremy convinces her to tough it out and give the change-hating men time to adjust to her presence. She agrees to stay.Casey is routinely given bad assignments that are engineered to get her fired. Her first job is driving a high, oversexed and hung-over British punk rock singer named "Cat Fight" (Leland Crooke) to his concert. Casey finds Cat Fight in a motel bed with his three women backup dancers in a drug-induced stupor. Realizing she'll be fired if she doesn't deliver him to the concert, she takes a cooler full of ice water and dumps it on Cat Fight's bed and manages to get Cat Fight and the three women into the car. During the drive to the concert, Cat Fight flees from the limousine to a local park where he tries to steal the panties off an overweight woman wearing a blue dress which as part of his "game" is worth 20,000 points. Despite the distraction, Casey manages to bring him into the arena just in time for the concert.Casey is then assigned to transport Battle Witherspoon (Sam J. Jones), an arrogant, heartless, workaholic executive who is stalking his ex-girlfriend. The angry ex tells him she can no longer stand to be with him and says she is pregnant with another man's child. Casey, sympathetic, offers visibily devastated Battle some liquor from the onboard bar. After consuming an excessive amount, Battle runs out of the car and strips his clothes off, running through a park stark naked, making a huge nuisance of himself. He finally returns to the limo and passes out. Not knowing where Battle's residence is, Casey takes him to her apartment so he can recover from the day's events. The following morning, he awakens and reverts back to his old hateful self, hurtfully insulting Casey before leaving.Unbeknownst to Casey, Battle Witherspoon is actually the son of the Mr. Witherspoon, the owner of the limo company. Mr. Witherspoon orders Battle to check out another of his companies upstate in Sonoma. Casey is assigned to drive Battle up north, much to their mutual displeasure. Halfway through the trip, the car overheats and breaks down in a remote location on the highway. Battle and Casey walk off in search of a phone. After walking and bickering for several hours, night falls and they get caught in a rainstorm. Casey sprains her ankle and is unable to walk. Battle continues his walk while carrying Casey in his arms. They finally find a rustic cabin occupied by a hillbilly couple, who invite them to spend the night. Both are put in a bedroom with a single bed and after another one of their arguments, Battle kisses her. They both have sex. The following morning, Battle proposes marriage but Casey refuses, fearing he will return to his emotionally-distant ways.Casey is next assigned to transport a Middle Eastern sheik from his hotel to a meeting. The sheik Abdul (Teller) is approached by a local pimp and con artist named Bone (Penn Jillette) out for a wild night on the town. The rambling Bone then forces Casey to drive them to a local nightclub while swindling the mute Abdul out of all his cash and valiables with magic tricks and card tricks. Bone and Abdul pick up a number of loose women and transport them around in the limo for some more drinking and stripping before Casey manages to drop Abdul back at the hotel. After Casey returns the next morning, she is fired by McBride after learning that police and government agents have been searching for the missing sheik.Realizing that he's fallen for Casey, Battle starts making some positive changes in his life and continues his efforts to court Casey. He slowly wins Casey over and takes her home to meet his father. When she arrives at the estate, she experiences Deja Vu, recalling the times she played in the Witherspoon mansion as a child. It turns out that Casey's mother was formerly employed by Witherspoon. But shockingly, Witherspoon reveals that he is Casey's biological father, making Battle and Casey siblings. Jeremy then comes into the room with Giles, another limo driver, ordering Giles to confess what he knows about Casey's paternity. He reveals Witherspoon is not Casey's biological father, Giles is. Giles was in a relationship with Casey's mother before she and Witherspoon spent their "little weekend together". Giles (who was especially hostile to Casey) reveals that he denied paternity in order that Casey would receive stable financial support as an heiress to the Witherspoon fortune.The movie ends with Battle and Casey's wedding. As they climb into the back of a Brentwood Limousine. The driver is McBride, who has finally received his comeuppance for his mysogynic treatment of Casey.
