            Sam Baldwin, a Chicago architect, has lost his wife (Carey Lowell) to cancer. He counsels his 8 year old son, Jonah (Ross Malinger), that it's hard to understand why she had to die, warning his son that if a person starts asking that question, they just go crazy.Sam decides he and Jonah should move to Seattle, Washington to make a fresh start. Sixteen months later Sam is still disconsolate and Jonah is worried. So, on Christmas Eve, Jonah calls Dr. Marcia Fieldstone, a clinical psychologist who hosts a national radio talk show, and he requests a new wife for his father. Dr. Fieldstone persuades Jonah to put Sam on the phone. Sam is upset, but he talks to Dr. Fieldstone about how he's been taking it a day at a time and that he's not sure he could ever love another woman. He admits that it would be best if Jonah had a mother figure. When Dr. Fieldstone learns that Sam has trouble sleeping, she decides to refer to him as Sleepless in Seattle.Thousands of women around the country, touched by the sad story of Sleepless in Seattle, send him letters (Jonah secretly provides Dr. Fieldstone with the address). Annie Reed, a journalist from Baltimore, Maryland, engaged to a nice but allergy-prone man named Walter (Bill Pullman), also hears the show with Dr. Fieldstone. Annie has been having doubts about her future with Walter and she begins to wonder about a possible connection between her and Sam. She actually drafts a letter to Sam, but decides not to send it. Her friend and co-worker, Becky (Rosie O'Donnell) secretly sends it to Sam.Jonah, who has been working his way through the flood of mail, finds Annie's missive and thinks the fact that shes a fan of Brooks Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles is a "sign." The movie includes a number of such signs or omens. Jonah tries to convince his father to go to New York City to meet Annie at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day (as her letter suggested), but Sam says no, it's too far away.Sam has resisted dating anyone, but after he comes home from work one afternoon to find Jonah sitting very close and listening to records with a precocious young girl named Jessica (Gaby Hoffmann), he feels an urgent need to try and find a mother-type for Jonah. Sam thinks it's probably best to associate with women he already knows, so he calls an acquaintance from work, Victoria (Barbara Garrick), and arranges a date.Jonah immediately dislikes Victoria her, because he didn't select her (he wants Sam to meet Annie) and she has a cackling, hyena-like laugh. On the advice of Jessica, Jonah mails a letter to Annie, pretending to be Sam and agreeing to meet her at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day. Annie decides to do a news story on Sleepless in Seattle, and she tells Walter that she needs to travel to Chicago to do an interview for the story. She then flies out to Seattle.Coincidentally, Sam and Jonah are at the airport in Seattle, dropping Victoria off for a flight, and Annie arrives at the same gate. Sam sees her and is immediately attracted, however she quickly disappears into the crowd.Annie rents a car and drives to Sam's house. Sam and Jonah have returned from the airport and are just taking a small boat out for a ride. Annie is able to follow them in her car, as they stay close to land. She watches Sam and Jonah playing on the beach together, but she doesn't try to approach them. She talks to Becky about it that night and decides that the next day, she will go up and talk to Sam. The next day, she gets out of her car and starts across the street, but stops short when she sees Sam and Jonah hugging Sam's sister, who came to visit. A truck driver blasts his horn at Annie, as she's standing in traffic. Sam looks up, sees her, and approaches her. They exchange hellos. Rather than wait for traffic to clear and go on across the street, Annie decides she is being silly about the whole thing, that Sam obviously has a girlfriend, and she goes back to New York and Walter.Jessica decides that Jonah should go to New York by himself to meet Annie, since Sam won't go. She then calls and makes the flight reservation. Jonah manages to get to New York and takes a taxi to the Empire State Building, telling the driver that he's going to meet his new mother. Once Sam finds out from Jessica where Jonah went, he rushes off in pursuit. He doesn't catch up to Jonah until he gets to the observation deck of the Empire State Building, where Jonah has been patiently waiting for Annie to appear.Meanwhile, Annie is at dinner with Walter at a high rise across the way. She's explaining the entire Sleepless in Seattle story to Walter. Walter doesn't want to be someone that Annie settles for in life, so he agrees to take back the ring he had given her. Annie then hurries on over to the Empire State Building just in case Sam's letter was legitimate.Jonah and Sam get on the down elevator just as Annie is exiting the elevator she's on. They miss each other. However, Annie discovers Jonah's backpack with Howard, his teddy bear, inside. As she's pondering that, Jonah and Sam come back out to the observation deck to retrieve the backpack, and they see and meet Annie for the first time.Sam notices the guard getting antsy, as the observation floor is officially closed, and says "we'd better go", then holds out his hand to Annie and adds, shall we?Jimmy Durante is singing Make Someone Happy as the camera pans around the outside of the Empire State Building, with the windows lit up like red hearts on each side, then the scene draws way back into space so that we see an outline of the entire U.S. with fireworks shooting high above as the movie ends.

            The movie opens with 30 year old Toula (Nina Vardalos) being picked up by her father in a rain storm. She flashes back to being different and not fitting in at school as a little girl, because she was (staunchly) Greek and nerdy. Her father wants her to get married and says she is getting so old. Not listening and unhappy waiting tables at her family's restaurant, she meets a new man. It goes no where at first, but she breaks away and convinces her parents to let her run her Aunt's travel agency, while she attends computer school. Toula feels like a caged animal set free, and of course, the new man, Ian Miller (John Corbett) stops by after seeing Toula through the window. The two start dating and dad finds out. Toula's dad Gus, has a fit because Ian is not Greek and has longer hair. So Gus starts inviting Greek men to dinner and Toula has no part of it. Soon, Ian asks her to marry him and the family must accept it! So Gus has Ian convert and Ian's parents go to Toula's parents to meet the family. Of course they have all of the cousin's and other relatives over, loud Greek music and a lamb on a spit in the front yard. Toula's parents and aunt are totally over bearing and scare Ian's parents. Toula's brother and cousin won't stop having Ian speak to the family in Greek, while disguising curse words as greetings. But the wedding is on, and it is big and loud. Gus gives a toast and found that Miller comes from Milo which means apple in Greek. yes, Toula's last name means orange and the joke goes over well. Then Gus gets emotional and reveals the wedding gift. Its a house! Excited, the couple hug her parents and music and merriment break out. Then the movie ends with Ian and Toula living next door with their little daughter who complains about going to Greek School.

            The film starts with Toula (Nia Vardalos) and her dad Gus (Michael Constantine) driving her daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) to school. They stop to pick up Nick's (Louis Mandylor) kids, and then Nikki's (Gia Carides) kids. Gus bugs Paris about finding a Greek boyfriend and to get married soon and have sons. This goes all the way to school when Paris gets out of the car. Toula, trying to comfort her daughter, only embarrasses her in front of everyone.Toula narrates that she has been trying to stay close to Paris, even going as far as to volunteer at her school, but all it does is embarrass both of them. On top of that, Toula and Ian (John Corbett) haven't had much of a romantic spark to their relationship since getting married.Paris is at a college fair at school. Toula and Ian want her to pick Northwestern University so she can stay close to home. The whole Portokalos clan shows up for support, including Maria (Lainie Kazan), Angelo (Joey Fatone), Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin), and Mana-Yiayia (Bess Meisler). Paris talks to the rep from Northwestern (Rob Riggle), which prompts the Portokalos men to confront him and ensure that she gets accepted. However, Paris is set on going to school far from Chicago, to Toula's dismay.Gus has taken it upon himself to prove that he is a direct descendant from Alexander The Great. He gets Toula to teach him how to use a computer so he can trace his ancestry. It proves to be such a struggle that Ian and Nick must help as well. Gus finds his marriage certificate and sees that it was never signed by a minister, meaning he and Maria are technically not legally married. Gus breaks the news to Maria and insists they must set up a wedding immediately. Maria refuses, as she wants Gus to propose properly, which he didn't do 50 years earlier. Gus doesn't see the point in doing so, so Maria turns against him.Following this, Voula tells Toula that she and Ian need to go on a date to retain the romance in their marriage, but to avoid arguments, they must not talk about Paris. Toula and Ian go out for dinner that night, and they do talk about Paris and how concerned they are that she might pick a school away from Chicago. When they get home, they start to fool around in the car until Maria, Voula, and Nikki catch them. After they leave, they continue.The family meets a famous TV personality named George (John Stamos) and his wife Anna (Rita Wilson). Knowing George is Greek, Gus invites him and Anna to their restaurant and to bring their son so he can meet Paris. When they arrive at the restaurant, the family is stunned (and disappointed) to see that George and Anna's son is 7 years old.One evening, Maria calls Toula's home to tell her and Ian that Gus got stuck in the bathtub since his bad hip locked. Toula, Ian, Nick, and Angelo rush over to help, but they're afraid to do so because Gus is nude. They try to turn him over, but they eventually resort to calling an ambulance. As he is being carried away, Gus then proposes to Maria properly, and she accepts (begrudgingly).The Portokalos women help Maria plan her wedding, but her demands become so hectic that their wedding planner quits on them. Meanwhile, Paris receives acceptance letters from both Northwester and NYU. She tells her parents that she wants to go to Northwestern just to make them happy, even though that's not what she wants. Toula, being tasked to fix everything, assembles the family together so that Maria can have the wedding she really wants. With everybody having a job to do, the time has come to plan another big fat Greek wedding.At school, Paris witnesses her crush Bennett (Alex Wolff) approaching his own crush to ask her to the prom. Unfortunately, the girl's new boyfriend asks her as well. Paris saves Bennett and asks him herself to go to prom. He accepts.Prom night arrives, which is the same day as the wedding. Paris tells Toula and Ian that she wants to go to NYU, and while it hurts them to send her away, Toula and Paris share a tender moment before Bennett shows up. On the way to prom, Paris bonds with Bennett after learning that he comes from a Greek family.Gus receives a surprise visit from his older brother Panos (Mark Margolis). He is there to support his brother, and they have a drink with Ian and Nick. Ian gets his buddy Mike (Ian Gomez) to get his police buddies to get them all to the church on time.At the church, Maria is walked down the aisle by Nick. Problem is, Gus has gotten pretty drunk and he can't stop giggling. Maria walks away since he won't take this seriously, prompting the women to run and convince her to go on with it. Panos enters and tells Maria that Gus has loved her for the last 50 years since she agreed to go with him to America. Maria knows she loves Gus too, and they proceed with the wedding. As it goes on, Toula and Ian rekindle their spark, while Paris and Bennett share their first kiss at prom.The family gathers at home for the reception. Paris and Bennett join them, and Bennett is jumped by Paris's cousins. Toula gives Gus a letter from the ancestry site confirming that he is a direct descendant of Alexander The Great. He proudly goes up to announce it. Toula lets Ian know that she really wrote it.The film concludes with the whole family dropping Paris off at her dorm in NYC.

            Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a hard working employee at a mattress company, and is stuck doing extra work on the day his son, Jamie (Jake Lloyd), is earning a purple belt in karate. Despite his promise to make it, he runs into trouble with a traffic jam and Officer Alexander Hummel (Robert Conrad), a sadistic cop from hell who forces him to do a sobriety test after catching him speeding on the shoulder. Because of all this, he ends up missing the karate class. In order to make it up to Jamie, he promises to get him anything he wants for Christmas. What he wants is the immensely popular "Turbo Man" doll, based on the Saturday-morning live action TV show of the same name. Unfortunately, Howard had promised to buy it earlier in the year and, as is the habit with him, promptly forgotten about it. To add further salt to the wound, his wife, Liz (Rita Wilson), informs him that since the dolls are the must-have gifts of the season, they are virtually impossible to find especially this close to Christmas.Desperate to not disappoint his family again, Howard sets off on a wild goose chase all over Minneapolis-St.Paul to find the doll. At the first store he gets to, he meets Myron Larabee (Sinbad), a post office worker who son wants one too. It is eventually revealed that this is going to be a "no holds barred" scavenger hunt, with lots of shoving, fighting, arguing, and worse. Throughout Howard's quest, the many stores he hits and the chaos that ensues at each one ultimately results in nothing, and at one point he has another run in with Officer Hummell when he accidentally knocks over his squad motorcycle. During a stopover at the Mall of America, Howard is lured into buying a doll from a con Santa (Jim Belushi), who is the leader of a large counterfeit toy-making operation. Unsurprisingly, he pays $500 for a Spanish speaking doll that falls apart the moment he opens the box. Angered at being ripped off, he accuses the Santas of undermining the values of Christmas and ends up in a brawl with them. The police show up to bust the ring, and Howard manages to get out of trouble by posing as an undercover cop using a toy badge.Later, Howard arrives at Mickey's Diner and uses their pay phone to call home. Jamie answers, and Howard unintentionally scolds him over Turbo Man when he tries to get him to hand the phone to Liz. In turn, Jamie rebukes Howard for never keeping his promises and hangs up. Liz overhears the conversation and becomes disappointed in Howard. Howard encounters Myron at the diner, and they attempt to patch things up by sharing their woe stories; Myron explains that when he was young, his father was unable to buy him a Johnny Seven OMA action figure on Christmas. Their conversation is interrupted when they hear on the KQRS radio station that the disc jockey is holding a Turbo Man competition, and whoever can name all eight of Santa's reindeer wins it! Resuming their rivalry, they barge into the studio (prompting the freaked-out disc jockey to call the police) and give the correct answer, only to discover that the prize is just a gift certificate. Enraged, Myron threatens the disc jockey with a small package from his mailbag which he claims is a mail bomb, but it turns out to be a fake. The police soon arrive (along with Officer Hummell), and Myron bluffs them into backing off by pulling out a much bigger package and claiming it to be a bomb too (unaware that it actually is one). Officer Hummell inspects it and declares that it is harmless, only for it to explode in his face when he tries to open it.After returning to the diner to find that his car has been stripped and spray-painted by thieves, Howard decides to give up the search and returns home to explain everything to Liz, only to discover his next door neighbor, Ted (Phil Hartman),(who always seems to be homing in on Liz when he is not around) in his house putting his star on his tree! His blood boiling with anger, Howard exacts revenge by breaking into Ted's house and stealing the Turbo Man doll he bought for his son, Johnny. However, he has a change of heart at the last minute as he could not see himself stealing from a child. Before he has a chance to replace it and escape, he is confronted by Ted's pet reindeer and he unintentionally sets some stuff on fire in the ensuing chaos. This causes him to be caught by Ted and a distraught Liz, who both leave to attend the Holiday Wintertainment Parade with Jamie and Johnny.Broken, Howard decides to to keep the one promise he can, by making his way to the parade to be with his family. Meanwhile, Ted attempts to make a pass at Liz, only to be hit with a thermos of eggnog after she sees who he really is. Upon arriving at the parade, Howard runs into a bandaged Officer Hummell and accidentally drenches him with hot chocolate. In the ensuing chase, Howard escapes into a preparations room for the parade where he is mistaken for a replacement for the actor who will play Turbo Man on the so-themed float. And best of all, he gets the opportunity to pick a child to present a coveted limited-edition Turbo Man doll! Who else does he pick but Jamie! But before Jamie recognizes him, Myron appears dressed as Turbo Man's archenemy, Dementor (having bound and gagged the real actor), and chases Jamie all around the street, with the crowd thinking that this is part of the act. Howard does his best to keep up, but has little skill in controlling the Turbo Man suit. In the end, he defeats Myron and saves both Jamie and the doll. Jamie is sad that his dad wasn't there to see it...until Howard removes his helmet to reveal his true identity!Meanwhile, Myron is being hauled off by the police, dismayed by his ultimate failure to retrieve the doll and give it to his son for Christmas. Touched by his words, Jamie gives it to him saying that he no longer needs it since his father is the real Turbo Man! Myron and Howard apologize and become friends, and Howard apologizes to a shocked Officer Hummell for everything. He is declared a hero and is crowd-surfed away.At home, Christmas Eve is finally spent right, as the star is mounted on the tree, and everyone's happy. Liz is so happy that Howard was willing to do so much to get a present for Jamie, that it has her wondering what he got for her. The shocked expression on his face tells the whole story. Uh oh!

            Yale University, 1963Lawrence Bourne III (Tom Hanks) has a $28,000 gambling debt, and loan shark, Albert Bordonaro (Alan Arbus), gives him one day to come up with the money. Lawrence bets on a football game, and listens to the outcome over a portable radio while he attends his graduation ceremony. When Lawrence's team loses, Albert Bordonaro waits until the day is over to exact revenge. Meanwhile, Lawrence asks his wealthy father, Lawrence Bourne, Jr. (George Plimpton), to loan him the money, but he refuses, insisting that Lawrence needs to learn responsibility. When a thug named Cicero (Ji-Tu Cumbaka) arrives to collect the payment, Lawrence flees to La Guardia airport in New York, as Cicero pursues.Lawrence runs to meet his roommate, Kent Sutcliffe (Xander Berkeley), who is about to depart for a two-year Peace Corps mission to Thailand. Lawrence begs Kent to let him take his place on the airplane to avoid being beaten or killed by Bordonaro's thug. Kent agrees on condition that Lawrence give him his vintage automobile and his girl friend, Bootsy (Jude Mussetter). Lawrence agrees, and escapes just in time.On the airplane, Lawrence meets Tom Tuttle (John Candy) from Tacoma, Washington, who talks non-stop. Lawrence soon realizes he made a mistake, and has no interest in social service. However, when he meets a pretty girl on the team named Beth Wexler (Rita Wilson), he changes his mind. Beth believes him to be Kent Suttcliffe, her assigned partner in Thailand. After they talk for hours on the flight, Lawrence makes a pass at Beth, and she is offended that he was trying to seduce her the whole time. After learning that Lawrence took Kent's place, Beth berates him. When he implies that she is "frigid," Beth slaps him.Arriving in Thailand, Beth is welcomed by John Reynolds (Tim Thomerson), who heads the agricultural department where she has been assigned. Beth is smitten. Lawrence begs to go home, but is sent to a rural village with Beth and Tom Tuttle where they will oversee a bridge-building project. John Reynolds warns them about guerrilla rebels in the area, and a drug lord named Chung Mee (Ernest Harada) who inhabits the surrounding jungle. Lawrence greets the villagers while still wearing his dinner jacket and bow tie, as Communist guerrillas watch the team's arrival through binoculars.As they settle into their huts, Lawrence makes a half-hearted apology to Beth. Tom Tuttle angers villagers by suggesting they cut down sacred teak forest trees to use for the bridge. However, a young English-speaking villager named At Toon (Gedde Watanabe) explains the misunderstanding, and befriends Lawrence. Sometime later, Tom Tuttle falls into a trap and is held captive by guerrillas in the jungle for much of the duration of the movie.Lawrence initiates a poker game with the villagers, and ignores Beth when she insists that they search for Tom. Drug lord Chung Mee arrives and demands a seat at the poker table. At Toon tells Lawrence that Chung Mee is a dangerous black market dealer and they should do what he asks. Chung Mee's men bind and blindfold Lawrence and At Toon, and take them to his jungle fortress. Chung Mee asks how quickly they can build the bridge, explaining it will increase his opium business. Lawrence proposes a deal to expedite construction, asking for an airline ticket home and $48,000. Chung Mee agrees, on condition it is completed in six weeks. Beth is surprised to see apathetic Lawrence enthusiastically working with the villagers on the bridge.Sometime later, John Reynolds returns to the village to check on the team, and Beth is excited by his arrival. She asks for his help finding Tom Tuttle, but John believes Tom is gone for good. When Beth expresses her interest in John, he introduces her to his knife, "Mike," and gives her a phallic Thai sculpture. Her interest begins to wane as she questions his sanity.Meanwhile, the captive Tom Tuttle is tied to a post by the guerrillas and meets a general named Souvanna (Clyde Kusatsu), who brainwashes the American patriot into becoming a communist rebel. Souvanna assigns Tom to build the bridge and allow no one to interfere. Tom returns to the village, and Beth greets him warmly, and he gets to work with Lawrence and the villagers constructing the bridge.In time, the bridge is completed, and Lawrence surprises Beth with a romantic date. As they dance, she warms up to him, and invites him into her hut. Lawrence respectfully declines, but kisses her goodnight and expresses his interest in her. When Beth enters her hut, John Reynolds surprises her, disguised in camouflage. He reveals that he works for a covert operation tasked to eliminate communist rebels, and Beth realizes he is insane. Reynolds explains they will use the bridge to bring in a convoy, destroying the village and creating a military outpost to attack the rebels. Beth screams as Reynolds uses chloroform to knock her out. At Toon witnesses Reynolds carrying Beth into the jungle, but does not realize she is unconscious.The next night, villagers celebrate the completion of the bridge, and Lawrence worries when Beth is missing. When At Toon admits to seeing her leave with John Reynolds, Lawrence is upset that Beth "led him on." Chung Mee's bodyguard, Lucille, arrives with Lawrence's money, and he attempts to seduce the mysterious woman. However, Lucille plans to kill him, but At Toon arrives to stop her. She confesses that Beth and Reynolds are with Chung Mee, and Lawrence realizes Beth was kidnapped. He asks Tom Tuttle for his help, but the brainwashed man refuses to leave his post protecting the bridge.Lawrence sneaks into Chung Mee's compound with At Toon's help, and finds Beth in a drugged state. He hides when John Reynolds approaches, but when Reynolds prepares to have his way with Beth, Lawrence attacks. He knocks Reynolds unconscious and carries Beth to safety, as Chung Mee's men pursue. Lawrence, Beth, and At Toon escape and return to the village. Lawrence demands they pack up and leave, but Beth insists they blow-up the bridge first. He refuses, and spontaneously professes his love for Beth, who asserts that if he really loved her, he would destroy the bridge. However, she takes back her statement, preferring he destroy the bridge based on his own sense of moral obligation. Lawrence agrees it is the right thing to do, and Beth is pleased.As Beth shares their plan with the villagers, Tom Tuttle arrives holding a lit stick of dynamite, to prevent them from destroying the bridge. Lawrence overtakes Tom, slapping him repeatedly. Tom returns to his patriotic self, and advises them on the best way to destroy the bridge. They get to work lining the bridge with dynamite, as both Chung Mee and the communist rebels descend upon the village. When the explosives fail to ignite, Lawrence returns to the bridge to fix the problem, and John Reynolds holds him at knife point. Lawrence knocks Reynolds over the side and jumps into the river after him. Tom Tuttle sets off the dynamite, and the bridge blows up.Afterward, Lawrence floats face down from the river, and Beth pulls him out and gives him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He revives and begins kissing her, as villagers cheer. In the final scene some time later, Lawrence writes a letter home, telling his parents that the Peace Corps has changed his life, and shares his plans to open a casino in the village.
