            In Ireland at the time the film is set, 'fallen women' were considered sinners who needed to be redeemed. The film follows the stories of four young women - Margaret ("guilty" of being raped by her cousin), Rose (unmarried mother), Bernadette (too beautiful and coquettish) and Crispina (mentally-handicapped single mother) - who are all forced by their families or caretakers to go to the Magdalene Asylum.The film details the disastrous lives of the four girls whilst they are inmates of the laundries, portraying their harsh daily regimen, their squalid living conditions and the oppressive nature of the Catholic faith at the time.Each woman suffers unspeakable cruelty and violence from the fictional Mother Superior, Sister Bridget, despite her appearance and outward demeanour. She is characterized as sadistic and almost inhuman at times, as conveyed through her merciless beating of Rose in full view of Bernadette, or when she mockingly laughs at Una as she hopelessly clutches at her fallen hair locks. It is never made explicit whether Sister Bridget needlessly behaves tyrannically or if she earnestly believes her actions necessary in the eyes of God (it could also be seen as internalised misogyny).The film also criticises the hypocrisy and corruption within the staff of the laundries, but it also intimates at the natures of the relationship between church and state in post-colonial Ireland. Sister Bridget relishes the money the business receives and it is suggested that little of it is distributed appropriately. Those who liken themselves to Mary Magdalene, who deprived herself of all pleasures of the flesh, even food and drink, eat hearty breakfasts of buttered toast and bacon while the working women subsist on oatmeal. In one particularly humiliating scene, the women are forced to stand naked in a line after taking a communal shower. The nuns then hold a "contest" on who has the most pubic hair, biggest bottom, biggest breasts and more. The corruption of the resident priest is made very clear through his fornication with Crispina.Three of the girls are shown, to some extent, to triumph over their situation and their captors. Margaret, although she is allowed to leave by the intervention of her younger brother, does not leave the asylum without leaving her mark. When she deliberately asks Sister Bridget to step aside for her to freely pass, and being sharply shot down, Margaret falls to her knees in prayer. The Mother Superior is so surprised, she only moves past her after the Bishop tells her to come along. Bernadette and Rose finally decide to escape together, trashing Sister Bridget's study in search for the key to the asylum door and engaging her in a suspenseful confrontation. The two girls escape her clutches and are helped to return to the real world by a sympathetic relative, their story optimistically ending when they board a coach bound for the ferry to Liverpool. Crispina's end, however, is not a happy one; she spends the rest of her days in a mental institution where she dies of anorexia at age 24.The epilogue to the film gives a brief description of the lives of four of the inmates after the girls leave the asylum by the late 1960s but according to one source these "biographical details" are fictitious. They are actually details of real women interviewed who "inspired" the characters in the film, even though the stories in the film were fictionalized and varied substantially from the true stories (for example, the real women did not all know each other, and one, not herself a Magdalene, was raised in an orphanage associated with an adjoining Magdalene laundry). It is noted that the last Magdalene asylum closed in 1996.

            Having been institutionalized for most of his life, Jack (Andrew Garfield) is finally released from prison at the age of 24. He and another boy murdered a child when they themselves were children. The film follows Jack's attempts to readjust to the world outside of confinement and restart a life which never really got going.Under the fatherly mentoring of Terry (Peter Mullan), his parole contact and social worker, he experiences a coming of age, which would normally have happened years ago. Forces from the past are constantly upon him. As we learn more about the events leading up to the crime which has ruined so many lives, there is an increasing sense of suspense, intrigue and ultimately doom: the tabloid press and Terry's real son are not going to let things lie.

            A portrait of an invisible man and an authentic account of homelessness within contemporary Britain, Hec McAdam is at once a powerful character study and an insight into the lives of those on the margins.The film takes a warm but unflinching look at the realities of homelessness on the move, through a tale of alienation and heartwarming reconciliation.Hec has been living around the motorways with transient friends for years. After so long on the move, he hopes to have left his past far behind. Our story follows his annual pilgrimage, on the roads and in the cities, from Scotland to a shelter in London to be with his temporary Christmas family . But his clock is ticking and he is compelled to try to reconnect with his real family he last saw 15 years before.During his Homeric journey through Newcastle and Liverpool, his luck runs out. Finally arriving in London, and the sanctuary of the shelter, the story of how Hec came to be leading a marginal life begins to emerge.Peter Mullans masterful performance brings us face to face with the stark reality that the only difference between you, me, and a man like Hec McAdam, is a mere twist of fate.

            Peter Mullan's third feature as a writer and director, after Orphans and The Magdalene Sisters, returns him to the 1970s Glasgow of his youth, although the Trainspotting and My Name is Joe actor stresses that Neds (which stands for 'Non-Educated Delinquents') is 'personal but not autobiographical'. We meet confident, studious John McGill just as he's about to start secondary school, where he fully expects to continue his so-far glittering academic career. But there are dark clouds on the horizon. His friendship with middle-class Julian shines a light on both his poor background and the dysfunction of his home, where his father is drunk, violent and ineffective, his mother is troubled and repressed and his elder brother is always in trouble with the law. At school, there are one or two good teachers, but most are uninterested and unhelpful in the face of the brutal and territorial gang culture which has spread from local housing estates to the schoolyard. The uneasy question Mullan poses is whether or not John can transcend the destiny of his class, education and family to make something of himself. Mullan shoots this tense, claustrophobic and violent drama in a style that tips a hat to the 1970s tales of Ken Loach and Alan Clarke. But it's not all desaturated realism: there are flashes of fantasy that hint at the imagination of Lindsay Anderson, as if Mullan had reimagined If... for the hard-up Glasgow of his youth.

Run out of town a year earlier by his girlfriends family, Stewart is forced to face up to his own past whilst uncovering the sinister truth behind his friends apparent suicide.

            This story is about an attractive, sociopathic womanizer, who wanders around corrupting every relationship in which he's involved. In addition to exploring some sadistic and Oedipal issues, he acts with a complete disregard for anyone else's situation or feelings; starting with his former girlfriend. Her story is told in flashbacks throughout the film. Just after he takes a job as a helper on a cargo boat in England, he and his boss find a woman's body floating in the canal. We see his personality unfold as he boldly seduces the plain, frustrated wife of a ferryman who takes him in to live with them, as he works for them on their boat.. Plenty of lust and nudity to illustrate his choices.

            The movie starts as office Max Lewinsky (McAvoy) is attempting to catch the notorious Jacob Sherwood (Strong) robbing a place. He is finally able to knock him off of his motorcycle in a tunnel, and they struggle for a while before Sherwood shoots Max in the knee. Max screams in pain as Sherwood escapes. Cuts to a young man on a plane who seems very nervous and uncomfortable. He unzips his sweatshirt and sees he is bleeding from his abdomen. He rushes off the plane and runs on the landing strip while making a call to his father; Sherwood. He says he isn't sure he would've made it to Iceland, and he is arrested and collapses. Max wakes up from a fitful sleep to drain fluid from his knee. His partner, Sarah (Riseborough), wakes him up and reprimands him for being late again. They are seen interrogating a man, Warns, in the back of a car about the murder of a young man, Otis Blake. When they exit the car Nathan (Mays) and Geiger (Morrissey) tell them that they must let him go, due to insufficient evidence. There is a big commotion inside the headquarters, because of the capture of Sherwood's son, Ruan. They call they've traced his last call to a cabin in Iceland and are driving there to pick him up now. Max whispers to Sarah that is wont work, so she announces this to the group. Nathan scorns them and continues his operation, which ultimately fails and causes the deaths of innocent officers. Jane (Little), a campaign manager, talks to Geiger and Nathan about getting more funding for officers. Max suggests that they should put Ruan in a public hospital to bait Sherwood, and Geiger allows it. Sherwood meets with Roy Edwards (Mullen), an old friend, to ask for advice. Roy tells him that Ruan was hanging out with Otis Blake and doing some small time crime. Sherwood goes to the hospital and nearly walks into the room, but he sends a man asking for directions in there and ruins the Trap. He escapes due to Max's bum knee. Ruan goes into cardiac arrest and dies on the table, but Max convinces Geiger to keep this hidden from the press, so Sherwood would "still be in play". Sherwood goes to the hotel that Ruan mentioned and find blood and money. He says they should put the room number out there to draw in whoever may have shot the boys. Max argues with Sarah about being a nobody, which she refutes. He tries to kiss her, but she refuses and he leaves. Roy tells a barber/ tattoo artist to put the hotel room out there, which eventually gets back to Max. Sherwood is hiding in the bathroom in the shower, waiting for the people who killed the boys. Two men arrive and begin searching for the money. There is a shootout and one of the men is shot and killed. The second shooter gets away, and Max arrives to find Sherwood is escaping. In the aftermath, Max finds a pair of glasses belonging to the second shooter. Sarah follows Warns from his grandmother's house to a shipping area. She flirts with the check in person and reads the name of the container Warns went to. She shoots off the locks and walks inside. While she is investigating, Warns walks in and the eye each other nervously. He strangles her to death and lays her in the container. Sherwood asks Roy if he knows a Bartnick, because he heard the name at the hotel. Roy's wife comes into their lunch angrily. She claims she doesn't want this in her life anymore, and asks if Sherwood has anything to do with this police officer's death. The officer turns out to be the first shooter from the hotel. Max reprimands Jane for using the officer's, Harvey Crown, death to help her campaign. He then goes in to talk to Geiger in the stairwell. He voices his suspicions about why the officer was in there and reveals there was another officer; Nathan. He found his glasses at the scene of the crime. Geiger thing something is going on too, and he agreed to look into Crown and Nathan, and Max can look into Sherwood. Sherwood calls Nathan BARTNICK and arranges for them to meet that night at a club. Juka tells Max that Otis Blake was once arrested by Harvey Crown. Roy hides a gun at the club under a pinball machine. Max goes to the hotel and continues to call Sarah, who isn't answering her phone (duh). Geiger walks in and tells Max that he tapped Nathan's phone line and heard he was meeting Sherwood at the club. Sherwood has his gun taken at the front door, while Nathan and Warns ready theirs to fire. Max breaks in through a window and sees Sherwood across the empty dance floor. Sherwood raises his hands, but then dashes away. Max starts to go after him, but Nathan and Warns begin shooting at his, causing him to duck behind a pillar. Warns goes for Max, while Nathan goes for Sternwood. Sternwood ends up killing Nathan, then escaping when Roy yanks the chains off the door with his car. However, he returns to save Max and shoves him in the back of the van. They fight for a bit, but Max is no match and agrees to take him to see his son. They arrive at the hospital and Max shows Sherwood his son is dead. Sherwood cries for a bit, before pulling himself together and walking out with Max. They run into Juka who states "they found her in your bed", meaning Sarah. Max beats up Juka and looks upon Sarah's body before Sherwood pulls him out of the hospital. Max and Sherwood stand on the pier sharing information. Max states that Otis and Ruan were killed by Warns, who was working with Nathan, Crown, and maybe Geiger. He says Sarah had Punch 119 on her hand. They determine this is a shipping container. They go to Warn's grandmother to press him for information poses as old military buddies. Warns claims he is a better soldier than would give information, even thought they have a gun pointed at the back of her head. He shoots Roy in the chest who shoots him in the chest. They get Warns to call Geiger, who is involved, to meet at the container. Roy is losing blood, but still conscious and claims he'd be okay staying there. Geiger goes to see Jane, who has orchestrated all of his to get her candidate elected. Geiger yells at her for denying this and goes to the container, anyway. Geiger drives in and they smash his car with a forklift; breaking his arm. They pull him out of the car and begin to interrogate him, including having Sherwood shoot him in the arm. Max begins to reveal what he believes happened. Otis and Ruan had come down to buy guns from Warns, who was with Crown and Nathan. Otis recognized Crown from arresting him, and this blew their cover so they killed Otis and shot Ruan; who got away. Then, they thought Max was getting too close, so they tried to frame him for Sarah's murder and kill Sherwood to tie up loose ends. Geiger states they were trying to get police to come and arrest the boys to show gun crime and help Weismann get elected. Max doesn't believe he'd do it for just the money, but Geiger says he couldn't bear visiting family's whose family members were killed due to poor supplies. He also states they shouldn't have brought Warns here, who begins shooting at them with some other men. Sherwood tells Max to go to the car and he'd meet him there, but Max is shot in the shoulder. Geiger grabs a gun from the shipping container and tries to shoot everyone he sees. Sherwood kills Warns and meets up with Max. They chase after Geiger and corner him on the roof. Geiger tries to appeal to Max's humanity, Sherwood shoots and kills him. Max turns his gun on Sherwood, but lowers it and allows him to escape. A force, headed by Juka, run to the roof and see Max. Max slowly drops his guns and raises his hands about his head.

            The Saban Films release "The Vanishing," with Gerard Butler, Peter Mullan, Connor Swindells, Soren Malling, Olafur Darri Olafsson and Gary Lewis.Also known as "The Flannan Isle Mystery," where in December 1900 investigators find that the Scotland west coast lighthouse abandoned by the three men employed there. This story became inspiring a famous poem by Wilfrid Wilson Gibson, his epic, Flannan Isle. There are also more recent artistic representations in various media, from a novel, an opera, and a video game.To date there has been no conclusion to what had happened to these men, James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald MacArthur. There have been theories over the years that the men were killed by pirates, eaten by animals and maybe kidnapped by aliens.
However, "The Vanishing" seems to be falling between the stools of thriller and drama the tale grows steadily but really never reaches a credible outcome even with the powerful actors such as Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan.After a storm, Donald makes a discovery down a deep crevice a dead man and his remnants of a small rowboat. When the young man (Connor Swindells) is lowered to validate the man has died. However, once down the man springs to life and there is a huge struggle between the two men. The young man (Connor Swindells) is forced to kill the man or be killed. It comes to light that the man was protecting this small chest that stored gold bars. This is unknown to the three light house caretakers at the time.The gold bars bring two more men to the island (Soren Malling and Olafur Darri Olafsson), who are seeking the man who had been killed. In this movie adaptation there are periods of vagueness of the story and this is one of them. There is no clarification of where the gold is from, why was their mate washed up in a crevice with the gold. The viewer is left to formulate their own conclusions.The story outlined by Celyn Jones and Joe Bone do not clarify if this is a crime melodrama or a psychological thriller. Nor does Danish director Kristoffer Nyholm, making his theatrical feature debut after numerous well-received TV cliffhangers ("The Killing," Taboo" and The Enfield Haunting") do a good job of having the audience truly understand what is going on. Leaving them with a bland and weak story that never comes home."The Vanishing" starts slowly and continues slow throughout the film never gaining a decent momentum. Johansson's widescreen cinematography, and other tech/design contributions does capture the viewers' attention but never delivers the overall expectation of a movie with Gerald Butler in it. There are fighting scenes, killing scenes and bloody scenes with no conformity of reason or definition of actions or clarity of story. High character conflict with sometimes moderate suspense just never delivers a good solid logical premise for the vanishing of these here men.So, of the three men, one is killed (Connor Swindells) by another (Gerard Butler). No one really knows why. Then the man that kills that character (Gerard Butler) is driven on the ocean with the boat that was used by the two earlier men seeking the gold who had been killed by the three. Here you see the third character (Peter Mullan) slips the first character (Connor Swindells) slipped into the ocean after a good bye kiss from the third character (Peter Mullan), then the 2nd character (Gerard Butler) slip off the boat into the ocean off an idling boat and come back up where the third and last of the three caretakers (Peter Mullan) holds his the 2nd character (Gerard Butler) under water so he drowns and slips deep into the ocean. Then the movie is over fade to black with the third character (Peter Mullan) still on the boat. Leaving the viewer to draw their own conclusion of what the third man (Peter Mullan) does. Uneventful, curious, and very unsatisfying. "The Vanishing" is a great base story and could have been a good thriller with excitement and interactions between the players if just written better and with a better overall concept of the story. Easily could have been a great movie. After seeing it, the viewers are left with unanswered questions and bewilderment. Its sad to see an "ALMOST," great movie experience.             The film is narrated by Ambrosinus, native to Britain, who knows of a legend concerning the sword of Julius Caesar, which was hidden away from evil men. It begins shortly before the coronation of Romulus as Emperor in 460.Having traveled through much of the known world in search of Caesar's sword, Ambrosinus has then become Romulus's tutor. A Druid, he at times gives the impression he is a magician, but his "magic" is just trickery. Romulus's father Orestes apparently rules Rome but is not Emperor himself.On the day before the coronation, Odoacer, commander of the barbarian Goths allied with Rome, demands a third of Italy from Orestes, but is rebuffed. The same day, Romulus meets the general of the Nova Invicta Legion, Aurelianus Caius Antonius called "Aurelius".The night after Romulus is crowned, Rome is attacked by the Goths. Most of Aurelius's men, pledged to protect the emperor, are killed, though Aurelius is only stunned and left for dead. Orestes and his wife are killed by Odoacer's lieutenant Wulfila, who captures Romulus.Next day, Odoacer, now ruler of the Western Empire, plans to have Romulus killed. However, Ambrosinus convinces Odoacer to spare the boy. Instead, Romulus is exiled to Capri along with Ambrosinus, guarded by Wulfila and his men. His prison is a villa constructed more than four centuries earlier by the emperor Tiberius.With Ambrosinus's help, Romulus discovers Caesar's sword in a hidden chamber within the villa. He comes across a statue of Caesar holding the sword, forged by a Chalybian smith after his military campaigns in Britain. Writing near the statue's feet proclaims the sword was made for "he who is destined to rule". This is interpreted as a prophecy by various characters, and Romulus keeps the weapon.The two are rescued from Capri by the loyal Aurelius and three surviving legionaries, accompanied by a female Indian warrior from Kerala named Mira, trained in the martial art of Kalarippayattu. They take Romulus to a seaport where the Eastern Roman Empire's emissary (whom Mira works for) and the senator Nestor have promised safe passage to Constantinople. However, they barely escape after they learn the Senate and the Eastern Empire have betrayed them and sided with Odoacer.Ambrosinus persuades Romulus to seek refuge in Britain, where the Ninth Legion (called the Dragon Legion) may remain loyal, being far from the events. They are followed by Wulfila and his men; the Goth covets Caesar's sword after learning the prophecy. Crossing the Alps and the English Channel, the party travels to Hadrian's Wall and initially find no evidence of the legion until a farmer approaches and reveals he was its commander. With the collapse of Roman support of Britain, the legion had decided to disband and settle as farmers. They also did not want to antagonize the powerful warlord Vortgyn.Vortgyn also desires the sword of Caesar as he aspires to rule the whole of Britain; after meeting with the Goths, he decides to either capture or kill Romulus as a gesture to Odoacer. Aurelius, wielding Ceasar's sword, leads a few supporters against Vortgyn's forces at Hadrian's Wall. The battle appears hopeless until the rest of the Ninth Legion, having taken up their old Roman arms and uniforms, appear and turn the tide. The two warring sides cease their hostilities when Ambrosinus kills Vortgyn at a temple near the battlefield. Romulus kills Wulfila with Caesar's sword, avenging his parents. He tells Aurelius that he fought like a dragon, whereupon Aurelius replies that Romulus fought like the son of a dragon.Repulsed by the deaths in the battle, Romulus heaves away his sword which remarkably pierces a large rock and becomes lodged there. Many years later, Ambrosinus, now known as Merlin, takes a young boy to the battlefield to describe the now legendary events. Merlin, who has visibly aged little since the battle, says that Aurelius married Mira and raised Romulus as their own son, and Romulus became a wise ruler and adopted the name "Pendragon". The boy, Arthur, recognizes him as his father.
