            In the year 1998, Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher), who suffered severe sexual abuse and traumas as a boy (played by Logan Lerman) and a teenager (played by John Patrick Amedori), blacks out frequently, often at moments of high stress. While entertaining a girl in his dorm room, he finds that when he reads from his adolescent journals, he travels back in time, and he is able to "redo" parts of his past, thereby causing the blackouts he experienced as a child. There are consequences to his choices, however, that then propagate back to his present life: his alternate futures vary from college student, to prisoner, to amputee. His efforts are driven by the desire to undo the most unpleasant events of his childhood which coincide with his mysterious blackouts, including saving his childhood sweetheart Kayleigh (Amy Smart) from being molested by her father (Eric Stoltz) and tormented by her sadistic brother (William Lee Scott).The actions he takes, and those he enables others to take during his blackouts, change the timeline in the new future where he awakes. As he continues to do this he realizes that even though his intentions are good his actions have unforeseen consequences. Moreover, the assimilation of dozens of years' worth of new memories from the alternate timelines causes him brain damage and severe nosebleeds. Ultimately, he decides that his attempts to alter the past end up only harming those he cares about. But Evan realizes that the main cause of everyone's suffering in all the different timelines is himself.At the conclusion of the film, Evan purposely travels back in time one final time to the first day he met Kayleigh. By scaring her away, he makes sure that she is never a part of his life, and thus finally succeeds in saving her life. He then destroys all of his journals and memories so that he is not ever tempted again to make any more changes.
The film ends eight years in the future with Evan leaving an office building in Manhattan and passing Kayleigh on a crowded sidewalk. They alternately pause and turn after spotting and passing each other. After a moment of hesitation, Evan lets her walk away without speaking to her.

            Alice Ackerman works as a camgirl online, broadcasting live shows from a studio she has set up in her home under the name "Lola_Lola". She is obsessed with her rank on the site, hoping to be number 1. Her mother is unaware of her career, believing that she works in web development. In one show, Alice simulates suicide on camera by pretending to slit her throat and using fake blood. This earns her large tips and increased popularity. She video chats with Barney, a big tipper and a loyal audience, and he suggests they meet while he is in town. Alice writes down the date and location before Barney suddenly logs off.In her next show, Alice finally hits the top 50, but barely has a chance to celebrate before her rank starts dropping due to a rival cam girl, Princess_X. Soon, Alice notices that "Lola" is currently streaming even though she is not online. She contacts the site's customer service but they assure her that playing old shows is impossible. Alice is locked out of her account so she logs in to a spare account to watch the show. The "Lola" on-screen responds to Alice's chats, proving that the show is indeed live. The woman on the broadcast looks and acts exactly like the real Alice. Alice's account is banned for attempting to warn viewers of the doppelganger so she creates a new one.Meanwhile, her younger brother Jordan's friends see a stream by the fake Lola while attending Jordan's birthday party, which they then show him. He gets into a fight with his friend who called Alice a porn star, before confronting Alice in front of their mother and the other guests. Her secret exposed, Alice panics and leaves. The Lola double, meanwhile, stages elaborate shows with more effects, like simulating suicide by gunshot, bringing her rank up. At first, Alice suspects Princess_X is behind this but she is not. She contacts the police but they refuse to help. With no hope, she sees that a cam girl named Baby is advertising an upcoming live show with "Lola" and attempts to get into contact with the girl. During her meeting with Barney, Alice is able to glean from him information about Baby's location. She excuses herself to the bathroom to further investigate on her phone, and "Lola" goes live. Barney sees it and confronts Alice, accusing her of lying about her identity before assaulting her. Alice narrowly manages to escape.Alice finds Baby's real name, Hannah Darin. She then finds out that Hannah Darin died in a car crash months ago. The fact that Baby is still broadcasting live means that whatever created the Lola copy also made one of Baby. Alice watches Lola and Baby's live show and identifies other cam girls she believes to be replicas. She notices that all of them have "Tinker" as their top friend and goes to confront him. He tells her he knows about the replicas, but that he is not behind them. He goes to the bathroom to have a private cam session with Lola. Enraged, Alice also interacts with Lola, who does not recognize that Alice is identical to her.Alice goes home and uses her vanity mirror, camera, and television to create an image which shows both her and the double. Viewers chalk up the two Lolas to special effects. Alice challenges Lola to a contest where they must imitate each other and whoever the viewers think does the best wins. If Alice wins, she gets to ask anything of Lola. The two compete by performing increasingly violent acts on themselves, culminating in Alice breaking her own nose. Alice is declared the winner and she demands Lola's account password. She then deletes Lola's account just as it reaches the number 1 rank.Sometime later, she prepares to start a live show under a new account, with her now supportive mother assisting. The film ends as she starts all over again with a new identity.
