
            Dwight (Macon Blair) is a beach vagrant, with dirty, stringy hair, living out of his car and scavenging through trash cans and dumpsters for food and money. A policewoman finds Dwight asleep in his junker car and gives him the news that Wade Cleland, the man who murdered his parents, is soon to be released from prison. Dwight watches as Wade is released from prison. Dwight steals a gun, but wrecks it trying to get the gun lock out of it; he throws it in the garbage. He then procures a knife. Dwight confronts Wade in a club's rest room and, after a brief fight, fatally stabs him in the temple.While trying to escape after the killing, Dwight realizes he left his car keys in the rest room with Wade's body. Dwight's hand is bloody from stabbing the Cleland Gang limousine tire, and steals the Cleland Gang's limousine. Dwight finds a teenage boy (David W. Thompson) in the rear of the limousine, and he stops and lets the boy out, admitting the crime. Dwight cleans up all the blood, cuts off his stringy hair, and now looks a pudgy "regular person," nothing like the beach vagrant who committed the murder. After cleaning up his looks, he visits his sister, Sam (Amy Hargreaves), for the first time in several years. Over an emotional conversation in a cafe, Dwight reveals that he killed Wade. His sister is shocked, but appears happy with the news. Dwight also says he assumed she would have heard about the murder on the news, then realizing that the story hasn't been on the news. This means that the Cleland Gang never contacted the police, and they are likely seeking their own revenge on Dwight. Because of this, Sam takes her two daughters and flees.While his sister is gone, Dwight waits in her house for the inevitable attack from the Clelands. Two attackers break into the house, one with a cross-bow weapon. Dwight gets to his car, and he manages to run over one of the attackers, Teddy (Kevin Kolack). He is shot in the leg with an arrow by the other attacker, but he chases the attacker off. Dwight then drags Teddy's unconscious body into the trunk of his car. He attempts home surgery on his arrow wound, but he is unable to extract it. Ultimately, he collapses in the waiting room of a local hospital. After waking up in the hospital, with the wound repaired, he leaves the building in his hospital johnny, and finds his hidden car. He bangs on the trunk, and Teddy bangs back. Dwight leaves Teddy in the trunk, and he drives to meet Ben Gaffney (Devin Ratray), an old high school friend. Dwight persuades Ben to lend him a rifle. Dwight then goes out to his car in a field. There, he unlocks the trunk and negotiates with Teddy, who is sitting in the trunk, with Dwight pointing the rifle at Teddy from a few yards away. Dwight tries to get Teddy to guarantee that the Clelands will leave his sister alone.During the conversation between Dwight and Teddy, it is revealed that Wade was not his parent's killer. It was, in fact, Wade's father, who has now died of cancer. Wade's father's motive was that Dwight's father was having an affair with his wife. Dwight's mother was killed accidentally. Teddy lures Dwight closer to the trunk, and then Teddy leaps from the truck and manages to wrestle Dwight's rifle from him. As Teddy is aiming the rifle at Dwight lying on the ground, Ben appears off in the distance. With a single shot from far away, Ben kills Teddy. Ben and Dwight return to Ben's house, where Dwight borrows a smaller weapon. He then drives off, heading for the Cleland's house. We see that Dwight has disabled Ben's car by taking the battery with him. At the Clelands, Dwight searches for all the guns in the house, and he throws them in the nearby water. He urinates on the grave of Wade's father, but he also digs a grave for Teddy, and buries him. He leaves a message on the answering machine and hides, waiting for the Clelands to return.The Cleland family returns, a man and two women. They listen to the message from Dwight. In the message, Dwight asks them to leave his sister alone, as the score is now equal in terms of family members murdered. When it's clear that the Clelands won't agree to this, Dwight emerges, and he shoots the man. Unbeknownst to Dwight, the teenage boy from the limousine is also there, and he makes his way around towards Dwight, ultimately shooting Dwight in the belly with a shotgun. Dwight hits the boy's shotgun away and states that he has "done his job", as Dwight thinks that he (Dwight) will die from the shotgun wound. Dwight tells the boy to leave and take Dwight's car in the woods. Dwight tells the boy that he (Dwight) is actually the boy's half brother (from the affair between the parents). In a rage, the older of the two women reaches under a recliner, and grabs a machine gun hidden there that Dwight had missed. There's very rapid gunfire. Dwight kills the remaining two women and, while lying on the floor spitting blood from his mouth, repeatedly whispers "the keys are in the car".

            The film starts when Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) has probably the worst day of her life. She works as an assistant in a medical facility where her patient dies, then someone notices what she's reading and tells her what is about to happen, she comes home to find dog poop in her yard and someone has burgled her house. All of these bad things drive her crazy. Crazy enough to turn her into a 'poop vigilante'. She confronts the owner of the dog who pooped in her yard: Tony (Elijah Wood). The two of them track down and chase the person who burgled Ruth's house. This black comedy includes encounters with eccentric character after eccentric character as they try to reclaim her stolen computer and her mother's silver dinnerware. Several times during their hunt Ruth tries to give the evidence she found to the police who treat her as a nuisance. So Ruth and Tony set off to catch the robbers on their own. More weird characters are introduced along the way, each odder than the one before. In the end Ruth catches the robbers and returns to her job as a medical assistant. The life Ruth found so boring returns to its boringness but now she and Tony are together.

            In December 2004, Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright), a writer who studies wolf behavior, is summoned to the small village of Keelut, Alaska by Medora Slone (Riley Keough), who wants Core to hunt down the wolves blamed for the disappearances and presumed deaths of three small children, including Medora's 6-year-old son, Bailey.Core, staying at the Slone house, discusses the missing children with Medora, who tells him of a hot springs to the north of town. That night, he awakes to the sound of Medora whispering and bathing. She exits the bathroom with a dark wooden wolf mask and approaches Core. Removing the mask, she lies beside Core and moves his hand to her neck forcefully.Medora's husband, Vernon Slone (Alexander Skarsgård), is overseas in Iraq, where he is shown mercilessly and efficiently gunning down Iraqi militants. While stationed at a checkpoint, Vernon wanders off and comes across an American soldier raping a local woman. Vernon stabs the soldier and leaves the woman with his knife to finish him off. Moments later, shooting breaks out at the checkpoint: Vernon is shot but survives to be sent home.In the morning, Core leaves town to track the wolves and meets an old native woman, Illanaq, who tells him he is going the wrong way, and that Medora 'knows evil'. Core tracks the wolves, coming across the hot springs Medora mentioned, and spots a pack of wolves eating their young. Unwilling to shoot them, Core returns to Keelut. At the Slone house, he finds Medora missing, and the cellar door unlocked. Downstairs, Core finds Bailey's frozen, strangled body, and calls for help. The police investigate, and the native villagers claim Medora is possessed by a wolf-demon called a tournaq.Vernon's old friend and father to another missing child, Cheeon (Julian Black Antelope), meets him at the airport and drives him to meet with police chief Donald Marium (James Badge Dale), Core, and several other officers at the morgue. After Core and Marium leave, Vernon shoots the remaining officers and the coroner. Vernon and Cheeon then take Bailey's body and bury it in a pine box, marking it with symbols in their blood. Vernon then returns to Keelut and kills Illanaq.Core, remembering the woman's prescient warning, and the police, following up on the murdered officers, arrive in Keelut at the same time. Marium and a few dozen officers take up positions outside Cheeon's house as the chief approaches to ask about his involvement with the murders. Cheeon, who refuses to come quietly, later opens up barn doors on the upper level of his house, and fires on the clustered police with an M60 machine gun, killing many. Marium flanks the building and shoots Cheeon from the inside.At an inn outside a tourist mine where Medora was sighted, Vernon meets John, an elderly hunter, who treated Vernon as a child for his seeming psychopathy with wolf-oil. The hunter invites Vernon to take a mask, saying he "needs to let the wolf out a little." Vernon chooses a mask from the wall, puts it on and kills John. As he leaves, Vernon is shot in the shoulder by the innkeeper, leading him to visit an old friend, Shan, who pulls the bullet from his shoulder.Core and Marium theorize that Medora killed Bailey to save him from darkness. Core recalls Medora's saying the nearby hot springs are "a good place to get clean" and thinks she might have gone there. They agree to go after Medora and try to catch her before Vernon does.Vernon, meanwhile, has a dream of himself and Medora in the hot springs. Now awake, he overhears Shan's informing the police of his presence. Vernon puts on the mask and stabs Shan in the head. The police force splits up, half going to the crime scene at Shan's house, and Marium and Core going to the hot springs.While looking at some wolf tracks in the snow, Marium is shot through the neck by an arrow fired by Vernon, who is wearing the mask. Core leaves Marium's body and heads to the hot springs, hoping to intercept Vernon. He finds Medora there, and is then arrowed in the chest by Vernon.As Vernon strangles her, Medora pushes the mask off his face. He releases her and they embrace. Core falls unconscious.After Core wakes, Vernon removes the arrow from Core's body before leaving with Medora. Core crawls outside the cave, encountering a pack of wolves. He is found by a father and son with a snowmobile and brought to their home for care, as Vernon's mother looks on. Vernon is seen digging up Bailey's grave with Medora; they pull the coffin along with them as they trek through the snow. Core wakes up in hospital, his daughter Amy at his bedside.

            Jake Tilton works at Trident Supply in Louisiana with his friends Tony Cobb and Catfish. Their supervisor is Gillespie and the top manager is Kevin, who is married to Jake's ex-girlfriend Olivia. Kevin fires Gillespie, who blames the poor performance of his employees, particularly Jake, for making him look bad.Outside a bar after work, several Trident employees notice a loaded GT Mustang in the parking lot. Over a drink, Cobb tells Jake that his ex-wife Abby has a restraining order preventing him from seeing his young son Corey.Jake and Cobb find Gillespie drinking away his sorrows alone. On the table is a monkey's paw. Gillespie tells them the tale of how the talisman grants its owner three wishes. He gives the paw to Jake and tells him to make a wish. Jake jokingly wishes for the GT in the parking lot. Gillespie tells Jake that he is now the paw's new owner.Cobb finds the keys in the Mustang and convinces Jake to take it for a joyride. Jake swerves to miss an alligator in the road and hits a tree. Cobb ejects through the windshield and dies. Jake flags down a passing car, but leaves the scene after wishing that Cobb were not dead. Cobb reanimates. A woman takes Cobb home to treat his wounds and he kills her. Meanwhile, Jake throws the paw away in frustration.In the morning, Detective Margolis notices Jake outside the police station as he contemplates reporting Cobb's death, but Jake leaves instead. Cobb confronts his ex-wife about wanting to see their son. Later, Jake finds Cobb in the cemetery and Cobb tells him that he wants to use the paw's third wish to reunite with his son Corey.Suspecting that Jake might use the last wish to take Olivia back from Kevin, Cobb puts Kevin's head in a machine press and kills him. Cobb also murders Jake's cancer-stricken mother to unburden Jake of her medical bills. Realizing that his family is in danger, Jake convinces his brother Charlie and Charlie's wife Sandy to leave town temporarily.Jake visits Gillespie and Gillespie admits the awful truth about the paw's curse. Cobb later kills Gillespie before going after Charlie and Sandy. Detective Margolis, who had been investigating the murders, comes to believe Cobb is the killer. However, Cobb kills Margolis as the detective tries taking Olivia to safety.Jake finally retrieves the paw and confronts Cobb outside Abby's home as Cobb holds Olivia hostage. Jake uses the third wish to ask for Cobb's soul to return. Cobb stabs Olivia before having an emotional breakdown and committing suicide with Jake's gun.Injured in the struggle with Cobb, Jake is taken away by ambulance while frantically asking about the paw's whereabouts. Later, as Abby and Corey drive away from their home, the paw is seen in the boy's hand.
