            Richard Steven Valenzuela (Lou Diamond Phillips) is a normal teenage boy living in San Diego, California who becomes a rock 'n' roll superstar under the stage name Ritchie Valens. He meets and falls in love with fellow high school student Donna Ludwig, for whom he wrote a song that became a number one hit ("Donna"). However, her father is shown as having problems with his daughter dating Ritchie, which causes friction between Donna and Ritchie. The movie also has several subplots, such as his relationship with his mother Connie Valenzuela (Rosanna DeSoto) and half-brother Bob Morales (Esai Morales), and the jealousy Bob felt toward Ritchie because of his success.In one scene, Bob wins an important art contest that helps promising cartoonists, only to throw away his prize because, in his mind, his mother doesn't seem to care enough. Bob resorts to drinking heavily and, at one point, leads him to end up crying in front of his mother's door yelling "I want to see my daughter!" in reference to the child he sired with Ritchie's ex-girlfriend, Rosie (Elizabeth Peña).However, when they get an opportunity, Ritchie and Bob sneak out for a good time. On one occasion, they take a road trip to Tijuana, visiting one of the local nightclubs where Ritchie discovers the song that would eventually become his biggest hit, "La Bamba".Meanwhile, the film also focuses on Ritchie's aviophobia (fear of flying), and a recurring dream he has as a result of a mid air collision between two planes that actually occurred directly over Ritchie's school, in which Ritchie's best friend was killed by one of the fallen aircraft. Eventually, he must conquer his fear when asked to perform his song "Donna" on American Bandstand. His manager, Bob Keane (Joe Pantoliano), helps him by giving him a little vodka to calm his nerves during the flight to Philadelphia for the Bandstand appearance.As Valens becomes more famous, his responsibilities change. He has to go on the ill-fated 1959 Winter Party Dance Tour with Buddy Holly (Marshall Crenshaw) and "The Big Bopper" (Stephen Lee) after his hits, "La Bamba" and "Donna", reach the top of the Billboard charts.Valens, Holly, and Bopper take off in an airplane during a light snowstorm for their fateful flight on February 3, 1959 (a day that becomes known as "The Day the Music Died"). Before that, Ritchie makes a call to his brother, wherein they patch up their differences. He even invites Bob to fly out to Chicago to join the tour for family support.The next day, as Bob is fixing his mother's car, he hears the news bulletin on the radio that his brother's plane crashed without any survivors. Bob darts out of his driveway in an attempt to get to his mother before she hears the bad news through the radio. Unfortunately, by the time he gets there she stands immobile. The news hits the whole Valenzuela family very hard. In the final scene, Bob is walking over a bridge and screaming the name of Ritchie, remembering all the good times they had together (in flashback).We then see Lou Diamond Phillips and the Mexican American rock band Los Lobos performing Valens' version of "La Bamba" accompanied by the closing credits.

            Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling (Denzel Washington) was involved in a friendly fire incident in Al Bathra during the Gulf War. He was an M1 Abrams tank battalion commander who, during the nighttime confusion of Iraqi tanks infiltrating his unit's lines, gave the order to fire, destroying one of his own tanks and killing his friend Lieutenant Boylar. The details were covered up (Boylar's parents were told that their son was killed by enemy fire), and Serling was shuffled off to a desk job.Later, he is assigned to determine if Army Captain Karen Emma Walden (Meg Ryan) should be the first woman to receive (posthumously) the Medal of Honor for valor in combat. A Medevac Huey commander, she was sent to rescue the crew of a helicopter that had been shot down. Finding them under heavy fire from an Iraqi tank and infantry, her men dropped an auxiliary fuel bladder on the tank and ignited it with a flare gun. Shortly after, her helicopter was also hit and downed. The two crews were unable to join forces. The survivors were rescued the next day, but Walden had been killed.At first, everything seems to be straightforward, but Serling begins to notice inconsistencies between the testimonies of the witnesses. Walden's co-pilot, Warrant Officer One Rady (Tim Guinee), praises Walden's character and performance, but was hit and rendered unconscious early on. Serling then sees Walden's medic, Specialist Ilario (Matt Damon), who also praises Walden; by his account, Walden was the one who came up with the idea of the improvised incendiary. Staff Sergeant Monfriez (Lou Diamond Phillips), however, tells Serling that Walden was a coward and that he was responsible for destroying the tank. The members of the other downed crew mention that they heard the distinctive sound of an M16 being used in the firefight during the rescue around the other helicopter, but Walden's crew denies firing one during the rescue, as theirs was out of ammunition. When Serling visits Walden's crew chief, Sergeant Altameyer (Seth Gilliam), who is dying of cancer in a hospital. Altameyer manages to get some words out, further confusing Serling, before self-medicating himself into unconsciousness.Under pressure from the White House and his commander, Brigadier General Hershberg (Michael Moriarty), to wrap things up quickly, Serling leaks the story to newspaper reporter Tony Gartner (Scott Glenn) to prevent another cover up. When Serling puts pressure on Monfriez during a car ride, Monfriez forces him to get out of the vehicle at gunpoint, then commits suicide by driving into an oncoming train.After finding an AWOL Ilario, Serling discovers that Monfriez wanted to escape under cover of darkness, which would have meant leaving Rady behind. Altameyer was ready to follow his lead and Ilario was wavering, but Walden refused to go along, resulting in an armed standoff with Monfriez. When an Iraqi infantryman appeared suddenly behind Monfriez, Walden fired at him. Mistakenly believing he was the target, Monfriez shot back and seriously wounded her. Walden, however, regained control of her men. The next morning, Walden stayed behind to cover their evacuation, firing the M16. Monfriez deliberately lied to the rescuers, telling them that she was dead so she would be left behind. Altameyer, injured and unable to say anything but "no!", was ignored. Ilario remained silent, fearing a court-martial. A-10 airplanes then napalmed the wreckage.Serling presents his final report to Hershberg. Walden's young daughter receives the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony. Later, Serling tearfully tells the Boylars the truth about the manner of their son's death. In the last moments of the film, it is shown that Walden had transported Boylar's body away from the battlefield.

            There is a biological emergency...so bad that the Center for Disease
Control has interrupted Dr Sheila Casper's [Dina Meyer] field research in the bat caves
of Skull Valley, Arizona to fly her to Gallup, Texas. Six days ago, two
genetically-altered flying foxes broke free from Dr Alexander McCabe's [Bob Gunton]
research laboratory. At first, they killed only animals, but now they've
begun feeding on humans. Sheila Casper, a wildlife zoologist who
specializes in bats (Chiroptera), has been called to help find the pair
before they kill more humans or contaminate other bats in the area.Aided by Sheriff Emmett Kimsey [Lou Diamond Phillips] and CDC specialist Dr Tobe Hodge [Carlos Jacott],
Sheila and her assistant Jimmy Sands [Leon] begin to search for the bats'
roosting area. The first night out, Emmett and Sheila are attacked by a
horde of them. They are able to capture one of them and plant a homing
device under its skin. When they set it free, however, hoping that it will
lead them to the roost, it is attacked and killed by the other bats, as
though they knew it was a plant. Apparently, these bats have been bred for
super-intelligence. Gallup must be evacuated, and the mayor is told to broadcast a
warning to all residents to stay indoors and secure their houses.
Unfortunately, no one listens. The bats invade the town and, within
minutes, people are grabbing guns and shooting at anything that moves,
cars are being smashed up and bursting into flames, and victims lay in the
street dying. Tobe Hodge is one of them.More help is required. The military arrives and begins evacuating the
town. They give Sheila and her bat hunters 48 hours before they start
blowing things up. Sheila sets up headquarters in the most easily secured
building in Gallup--the school. The military has promised to center the
infrared cameras of a Chromo-B340 satellite on the area around Gallop to
help locate the bat roost.
Even when the roost is located, however, how are they going to
annihilate every last bat? From the numbers they saw the other night,
there are thousands of them. Bombing the roost will only scatter them,
Sheila explains, leading to the creation of other roosts and potentiating
the problem. Poisoning them is not an option, as the most popular bat
poison (chlorofoccinol?) is only marginally effective against bats but
highly lethal to humans. Sheila thinks the best solution is to put them to
sleep by lowering the temperature in the cave. At 40 degrees F, bats begin
to hibernate. At 32 degrees, they freeze to death.Jimmy arranges for an NGIC Industrial Coolant that uses freon, carbon
dioxide, and oxygen to be dropped off as soon as the roost is located.
When the spy satellite begins sending pictures of the bats, Emmett
recognizes the area as that of the old Black Rock mine. Everything is set
to begin at 0600 hours. Except that the government has other ideas, which
don't include waiting until dawn. During the night, they wire the mine
with explosives. Unfortunately, the bats kill them all then come for
McCabe, their creator, who still has a modicum of mind control over them.
The bats want their freedom. When Sheila et al arrive at the mine the next
morning, they are informed by the military that they weren't able to turn
on the coolant unit, so the plan now is to bomb and gas the mine starting
in one hour.Sheila decides that one hour is enough time for them to get the
coolant unit started, so she and Emmett suit up and enter the mine. Jimmy
stays outside to monitor their progress and to blow up the mine entrance
should it become necessary. Although they find themselves up to their
waist in bat guano, they are successful at starting the coolant. As they
make for the exit, the bats begin to pursue. Run, run, run! The moment
they exit, Jimmy detonates the explosives.
As they drive away, an escaped bat lifts its head out of the sand on
