United States of Tara


            After contemplating suicide by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, 16-year-old Craig Gilner (Keir Gilchrist), decides to go to the hospital to seek help. Craig tells Dr. Mahmoud (Aasif Mandvi) that he needs immediate help to which Dr. Mahmoud registers Craig for a one week stay in the hospital's psychiatric floor.[2][3] At first, Craig is unsure if he made the right choice to stay, mostly due to the fact that his friends might find out when he misses school, especially Nia (Zoë Kravitz), his crush and the girlfriend to his best friend Aaron (Thomas Mann). Also, he is placed in the adult ward because there are too few teenage patients, and he understandbly feels uneasy and a bit scared being in the midst of so many adult psychotics.Craig is introduced to Bobby (Zach Galifianakis), an adult patient who claims he is only there on vacation, as he takes Craig under his wing. During a group discussion, Craig learns that Bobby is stressed about an upcoming interview in hopes of moving to a halfway house. When Bobby states that all he'll have to wear for the interview is the sweater he is currently wearing, Craig offers that Bobby could borrow one of his dad's dress shirts to wear, and Bobby accepts. Craig's kind offer to Bobby is witnessed by Noelle (Emma Roberts), another teenage patient who is in for self-mutilation. She is impressed by Craig and leaves him a note to meet with her that night. Later, Craig and Noelle attend a painting session for the patients. Craig paints a picture of an imaginary city map which he describes as like his own brain.Throughout his stay, Craig comes to a close bond with various patients on the floor including Bobby and Noelle. Bobby reveals to Craig that he is a father of a little girl and that he is actually in the ward for attempting to commit suicide six times. As Craig tries to help Bobby with his problems, Bobby, in return, helps Craig to gain the courage to ask out Noelle.One night, Nia stops by to visit Craig at the hospital, revealing that she and Aaron had broken up. Craig takes Nia back to his room where she tries to seduce him. However, the two are caught by Craig's roommate Muqtada (Bernard White), an old Egyptian man who has not left the room during his stay. As Nia runs out of the room, Criag chases her and calls out that he loves her, unaware that Noelle is standing behind him. Upset, Noelle storms off leaving behind a drawing of a self portrait that she planned on giving to Craig.Craig eventually wins Noelle's forgiveness, and the pair sneak out of the ward in scrubs and run around the hospital, ending up on the roof. There, Craig finally works up the courage to ask her on a date, and they kiss. On Craig's last night, he hosts a pizza party for the patients and helps Muqtada leave his room by playing Egyptian music for him to dance to. Craig also meets with Bobby, who got accepted into the home, and gives him a map of how Craig imagines Bobby's brain to be. Craig leaves the hospital the next morning not entirely cured, but with better aspirations to enjoy his life. He finally gains the courage to speak the truth to his father - which seems to be one of his main problems - perhaps the biggest problem. Dad wants Craig to be a big businessman, but Craig is more clearly cut out for the creative artistic life - painting and singing.
    

It's Kind of a Funny Story


            In the opening scene, a young woman is fleeing from someone or something. She is shown driving to the beach. At the beach, she calls her father and tells him that she's sorry for being so unkind to him. In the morning, it is shown that she was brutally murdered during the night. Her leg is twisted and a bone is seen sticking out of it.The film then switches to Jay (Maika Monroe) who is on a date with Hugh (Jake Weary) at the movies. While they are waiting in line, Hugh starts talking about how envious he is of young children and how they have innocent, carefree lives. When they are inside the theater, Hugh spots a young woman at the entrance. He points her out to Jay, but she, however, cannot see her. Suddenly, Hugh starts getting afraid and demands to Jay that they leave the theater.On their next date, Jay and Hugh are having sex in his car, when he suddenly chloroforms her. When Jay awakens, she is tied up in a wheelchair. Hugh is there and he explains to her that when they had sex, he passed on a curse to her. This curse is an entity that can only be seen by the person with the curse (which is now Jay). The entity can take the form of any person and will follow her repeatedly at a walking pace. If IT catches her, it will kill her and will go after the previous person who had the curse (which would now be Hugh) to get them to pass the curse on to someone else.It is implied that Hugh had slept with the young woman from the beginning of the film, but since IT caught her, IT is continuing to stalk Hugh until he passes the curse on to someone else, hence why he slept with Jay.At that moment, Hugh spots a naked woman walking towards them. Jay and Hugh then flee. Hugh drops Jay off at home and continues to flee. The police are searching for Hugh, but are unable to find him.While at school, Jay spots an old woman in a hospital gown walking towards her. Everyone around does not appear to notice to the old woman. Jay's friend, Paul (Keir Gilchrist), who has a crush on Jay, and her sister Kelly (Lili Sepe) agree to help.That night, Jay, Paul, Kelly and another friend, Yara (Olivia Luccardi), all agree to spend the night in the same house. During the night, Paul hears a noise and examines a smashed window in the kitchen. He looks around, but does not see anyone. Jay then sees an almost naked woman with dark eyes walking towards her.She runs to tell the others, but none of them can see anything. Suddenly, a tall man with dark eyes walks into the room. Jay then runs out of the house.Jay runs to a playground nearby, where her friends eventually catch up to her. A neighbor named Greg (Daniel Zovatto) offers to help the group by giving them a ride. Jay and her friends plan to confront Hugh, so after tracking him down by figuring out his real address, he insists on his original story, telling Jay that she needs to sleep with someone in order to successfully pass the curse on to someone else.The group then goes back to Greg's house. Jay deduces that she needs to learn how to use a gun. While the group is sitting by the water, the entity takes on the appearance of Yara and begins to attack Jay. Jay flees and then IT takes the appearance of the tall old man and then Paul. Jay manages to shoot IT, but it does not die. Jay gets into a car and drives away, but she only manages to crash into a cornfield.When Jay awakens, she is in the hospital being treated for her broken arm. Before she is released, Jay decides to pass the curse on to someone else. She sleeps with Greg in her hospital bed in hopes of successfully passing the curse on to him. Paul is heartbroken after finding out that Jay was with Greg.At home, Jay looks out the window to see Greg walking down the street to his house. When he gets to his window, he breaks it and enters. Jay then figures out that IT has taken the appearance of Greg. Jay runs over to the house and peeks inside to see IT taking on the appearance of Greg's mom. Jay then tries to warn Greg, who is on the telephone. IT jumps on top of Greg and kills him. Now, the curse has reverted back to Jay, who flees to the woods.When she awakens in the morning, Jay is near a beach and spots three young men on a boat. She undresses and goes into the water, hoping that she can sleep with one of the men and can pass on the curse to buy herself more time.Back at home, Paul wants to sleep with Jay, but she rebuffs him, since she does not want him to be killed. Jay spots IT, posing as a naked man, spying on her from the roof. Jay then comes up with a plan to kill IT.The group goes to a deserted swimming pool in hopes of luring IT into the water and then electrocuting it. Jay is the bait and gets into the pool. When she finally spots IT, it has taken on the appearance of her father. But, IT has figured out the plan and starts throwing electrical devices into the water to kill Jay. Since they cannot see IT, the others fire blindly to try to kill it. In the ensuing chaos, Paul accidentally wounds Yara, but then shoots IT in the head, supposedly killing the entity.After heading home, Paul and Jay finally have sex. Paul then drives to a run-down part of Detroit where there are prostitutes walking the street. (The implication seems to be that the Paul plans to have sex with a hooker in order to quickly pass the curse to someone else...)Sometime later, Jay and Paul are walking down the street hand-in-hand. Behind them, a person is following them.THE END.

            Ethan is a tech-savvy high school teenager who lives with his mom across the road from Harold, a grumpy, dislikeable old man who lives on his own, is rude to everybody and does all he can to keep himself to himself. Harold doesn't answer the door to a friend who calls by and threatens to dismember another neighbor's dog when it comes on to Harold's property.Ethan and his friend Sean have a school project and decide it would be amusing to make Harold believe his house is haunted and monitor his reaction. They know that Harold goes out on a regular shopping trip and never locks his doors, so they purchase some hidden cameras and other electronic gadgetry with Sean's dad's credit card and go to Harold's house while he is out. They set up cameras in different rooms and rig various household appliances so that they can control them remotely. While they are in the house they notice that Harold keeps his cellar door padlocked. This seems odd, given that Harold never locks his outside doors.The experiments are a success: the boys use a computer in Ethan's bedroom to observe Harold's behavior while making his lights flicker, his screen door bang open and shut and his music player turn on and off. However they are puzzled that Harold doesn't react or appear frightened. Instead, we see him experiencing flashbacks where his wife appears, telling him to fix the screen door (which he eventually does by destroying it with an ax), or asking him if he wants to dance to the music with her. The flickering lights trigger a security alarm which causes police officer Palmer to call by, but Harold rudely sends him away. The boys are also mystified to observe Harold disappearing into his cellar whenever these ghostly events occur; on one occasion staying there all night and emerging only early the next morning. He has also stopped going out of the house.Convinced that Harold is hiding something in his cellar, the boys call the police anonymously, claiming to have heard a woman's screams coming from his house. Officer Palmer comes to investigate again but leaves without fuss after Harold allows him to search the cellar. Ethan, who has been secretly watching all of this, is certain Officer Palmer missed something and pushes hard for the boys to search the cellar themselves, but Sean refuses and asks why Ethan is so obsessed. It transpires that Ethan didn't just target Harold because he was a mean old man; he also holds Harold responsible for putting Ethan's father in jail. Ethan's father was a violent alcoholic who frequently attacked his mother. During one of these attacks his mother ran to Harold for help and Harold called the police.Ethan and Sean's relationship deteriorates badly after a party at Ethan's house, where Sean goes into a bedroom to make out with a girlfriend when she discovers a hidden camera and they realize that Ethan is watching them. Sean is furious, declares he want nothing more to do with the experiment and demands the return of all his equipment, but Ethan refuses and threatens Sean with the fact that it is all traceable back to him and his dad's credit card. Their argument is interrupted when Harold's cat knocks over one of the hidden cameras while Harold is asleep in his bedroom and Ethan has to go and recover it before it's discovered. This he does without incident while Sean monitors the cameras to warn him if Harold wakes up. However on his way back out of the house Ethan notices that the cellar door is unlocked. He is overcome with curiosity and goes down into the cellar where he discovers that Harold has made a shrine to his dead wife there. Ethan picks up a hand bell which makes a noise, waking Harold up which Sean observes and warns Ethan by text. Ethan just has time to go back silently upstairs, lock the cellar door, put the bell (which he inadvertently carried up with him) down on the living room table and hide underneath a table before Harold emerges from his bedroom to investigate. Harold notices the bell, goes back into his bedroom and comes out again carrying a handgun. Ethan cowers under the table expecting to be discovered, but to the boys' shock Harold turns the gun instead and shoots himself in the head. Sean rushes over so they can remove all evidence of their surveillance before the police arrive, but Officer Palmer is in the neighborhood, hears the shot and arrives immediately to arrest both boys on the spot.A final flashback reveals the reason for Harold's behavior. It turns out that Harold was a sad and lonely old man who was deeply in love with his wife. When she fell ill and lay dying, Harold bought her the hand bell and made a solemn promise that whenever she rang it, he would come to her. All this time he believed that his wife was causing the paranormal events and when he heard the bell ring and saw it on the living room table he was convinced that it was she, calling him to join her.At the resultant criminal trial (for which we saw flash forwards throughout the movie) the boys are given a probationary sentence and a community service order. Afterwards as they leave the courthouse Sean heads off to join his friends and family leaving Ethan on his own. As Ethan stands there, surrounded by a crowd of reporters and photographers all giving him their full attention, a small smile starts to appear on his face.
