Kato Cooks was born in 1950 in New Orleans, La., to Raymond Cooks Sr. (1931-2000) and Dorothy Bell Cooks (1932 - 2016). He is the first-born child for both.Kato was reared in Oceanside (Camp Pendleton), San Diego, Los Angeles, and Oakland, CA.Kato studied acting under Art Washington and Felton Perry at Youth On Stage Community Center, in South Los Angeles in the 1970s, and later under Glynn Turman and Cliff Roquemore, at the Inner City Cultural Center, in Los Angeles. His love of the stage landed him at The Fountain Theatre, in Hollywood, CA., where he has served on its board of directors since 2004. His venture into film was occasioned by a Kickstarter campaign for the short animated documentary film, Hibakusha, which he executive produced with writer/filmmaker Timothy Tau, and was produced and directed by Choz Belen and Steven Nguyen.During body-modeling principal photography, director Nguyen recruited Kato to provide voice-over for his character, newscaster Peter Mack (named after Kato's paternal grandfather, Peter Mack Cooks (1889-1954)).Enthralled with the process, Kato now seeks another film project that tells an important story, provides a valuable lesson, or amplifies oral traditions of ethnic minorities.Kato is president and CEO of a "family of enterprises" embodied in The Kato Cooks Companies. He is also a freelance writer for Examiner.com and Small Business Exchange, Inc. (online and print editions). Kato is vice president of the San Francisco-based Bay Area Contract Compliance Officers Association, Inc. and is a life member of American Mensa. He was featured in the online edition of Black Enterprise magazine in 2011, and the online edition of BET Black History Month Showcase in 2012.
