            Saravanavelu alias Velu (Vijay) is a state-level kabaddi player who is the son of Chennai's Assistant Commissioner of Police Sivasubramanian (Ashish Vidyarthi). Sivasubramanian is not fond of his son, constantly chiding him for his lack of interest in studies and his love for kabaddi. In contrast, his mother (Janaki Sabesh) dotes on him, and his younger sister Bhuvana (Nancy Jennifer), a sharp and inquisitive schoolgirl, constantly gets Velu into trouble with their father, but nevertheless adores him.Meanwhile, in Madurai, there is a ruthless factionalist leader Muthupandi (Prakash Raj), who lusts after Dhanalakshmi (Trisha) and would do anything to marry her. Muthupandi kills Dhanalakshmi's first elder brother as he rejects his offer to marry her. Then Dhanalakshmi's second elder brother is also killed by Muthupandi when he tries to avenge his brother's murder. Dhanalakshmi's father (Vinod Raj) is a meek person who gets horrified by Muthupandi's acts and asks Dhanalakshmi to leave Madurai and lead a peaceful life at her uncle's place in the United States by giving her the necessary certificates and money. Muthupandi catches her when she starts fleeing, because by coincidence, she gets into one of the lorries owned by him. At this juncture, Velu, who is in Madurai to play in a kabaddi tournament, rescues Dhanalakshmi and takes her to Chennai.Velu takes Dhanalakshmi to his house and hides her in his room, unknown to his family. With the help of his friends, he arranges passport, visa, and flight tickets for Dhanalakshmi so that she can go to the US. Meanwhile, Muthupandi and his father (Tanikella Bharani), who is the Home Minister, ask Sivasubramanian to search for Dhanalakshmi and the apparent kidnapper. When Sivasubramanian discovers that it is his own son who did the "crime", Velu and Dhanalakshmi run away and hide in the lighthouse. Dhanalakshmi has by now fallen in love with Velu, and has been accepted by his mother and sister. So she is reluctant to go to the US. Velu however, is adamant on sending her to the US, and he, along with his friends, get her to the airport in time for her flight before their kabaddi match against Punjab in the final of the National League.Sivasubramanian, enraged that his son is a wanted criminal and yet is playing in a kabaddi match, goes to the stadium to arrest Velu. By now, Velu too has fallen in love with Dhanalakshmi and begins to miss her, only to spot her in the stadium during the match. Velu's lack of focus in the game is replaced by his best performance on seeing Dhanalakshmi, winning Tamil Nadu the championship. After winning the championship, Velu is arrested by his father, but is then stopped by Muthupandi, who wants to fight Velu, having been incited by Dhanalakshmi to do so to prove his worth. Velu defeats Muthupandi and embraces Dhanalakshmi, but when Muthupandi regains consciousness and tries to kill Velu, he accidentally falls on a floodlight and dies.

            Jagdish, an army officer, comes home on vacation. His parents want him to get married and have made a choice about the girl, who is Nisha. Initially, Jagdish, thinking that Kajal is too homely decides she is not the apt choice for him. But later, when he sees that Nisha is a boxer, he finds that she is actually a girl with modern outlook and falls for her. One day, while going in a local bus with his friend Balaji, a police officer, a pick-pocketing incident occurs, and the two decide to find out the pick-pocket by checking everyone in the bus. So the bus stops and everyone is made to get down and is checked. A guy, with tensed looks puts something down in the bus, and runs away from the back door of the bus. Jagdish starts to chase him, but later finds the actual pick-pocket is caught at the front door. Thinking that the guy is up to something, he continues chasing him, and when he questions on why he ran away, the bus explodes. Police arrest the guy, who is a sleeper cell and is treated in hospital for his injuires.He escapes from the hospital after killing the doctor, and Balaji, warns Jagdish, to be safe and leave the city the next day, as the escaped sleeper cell might target him. But soon, it is revealed that, Jagdish actually chased him down, once he escaped the hospital and taken him a captive. Jagdish, cuts the guy's finger, and then questions on who was the police officer, who helped in his escape. He then, goes to the police officer's home, and makes him shoot himself. He then finds a sheet of paper with a 12 red-marked dots in the terrorist's bag. He then deduces that those represent various locations in Mumbai city Map. Deducing that the terrorists have planned for a bomb-attack in those locations, he comes to know that the plan is to attack those places at the same time on 12th of that month. On the same day, after attending a marriage of his army friend in a church, Jagdish seeks the help of his army team members. Jagdish, intentionally makes the captured sleeper cell to escape, and Jagdish & team, follow that guy, who meets on the way 11 other sleeper cells. Jagdish & his 11 men team, split and follow each of those 12 sleeper cells, and then shoot all the 12 sleeper cells at the same time.This stirs the anger of the terrorist leader (Vidyut Jamal), who calls the mobile of the captured sleeper cell that was missing from the spot of attack, thinking it must have been taken by the men who were responsible for this. The phone is answered by Jagdish and the terrorist leader warns him that he will track him down and kill him. He deduces that, each of those 12 men who killed the sleeper cells, must be trained physically and also must be good shooters, as all were head-shots. Knowing that everyone was wearing a suit during the assault, he decides that, those guys must have returned from a marriage. With the help of a local corrupt politician, he finds the marriage of an army officer took place on the same date, narrowing down his target to the people who attended that marriage. Jagdish meanwhile, starts thinking on the thread the terrorist leader might follow to track him down, and finalises that he and his men wearing suit during the assault, should be the loop-hole. The terrorist leader, kills the family of the bride, finds from the marriage album that, there were 5 groups of 12 men; he circles out one person in each group photo and decides to kidnap each guy's sister to know which of the groups was responsible. Jagdish reaches the bride's home only to find everyone is dead and sees the album and thinks the terrorist leader might try to target each of the 5 circled guys.But later, when sisters of 3 of those guys are kidnapped, Jagdish finds out the plan and asks his sister to use the scooter of the girl who is about to be kidnapped next. The terrorists thus wrongly kidnap Jagdish's sister. Jagdish then, using his K-9 dog, tracks down the place where his sister is kidnapped and in a subsequent shootout, Jagdish kills all of the terrorists.The terrorist leader in retaliation blasts a shopping complex killing Jagdish's army friend and his family and then blackmails Jagidish that if he does not show up in the place he says, he would kill all other men too. Jagdish, then agrees to him. But he plans to detonate the place where he will meet the terrorist leader, thereby killing the terrorist gang. He asks his friend to follow him using the tracking chip, he inserts in his arm and then plant the bomb in the place where he will meet the leader.The terrorist leader, asks Jagdish to switch between various cars on the way and finally makes him get into a ship. He then reveals, that he has planted bombs in all the cars Jagdish has used in the way and that once the police finds from the surveillance cameras that he is the one who has driven the car to the place, they will brand him a double-agent. When the leader asks Jagdish his last wish, Jagdish wishes to get beaten to death. And after getting beaten very hard, Jagdish challenges him, to uncuff him and then fight him.The leader accepts the challenge and subsequently Jagdish defeats him and escapes with him in a boat, where the both watch the ship getting blasted. Jagdish then shoots the leader saying "Die with the feeling of suspense(of how the ship blasted!)".The film then ends with Jagdish and other army officers boarding a train for the next mission.

            Venkat Ramakrishnan (Srikanth), Sevarkodi Senthil (Jiiva) and Panchavan Parivendan alias Pari (Vijay) are three first year engineering students who share a room in the hostel of Ideal Engineering College (IEC), Chennai. While Venkat and Senthil are average students who come from a modern background, Pari is from a rich family. Venkat studies engineering as per his father's wishes, over his own wish - to become a wildlife photographer, while Senthil, whose family is poor, studies engineering to improve his family's financial situation and get his sister married. Pari, however, studies engineering for his simple passion for machines and devices. He believes that one should follow excellence, not success, as success will take care of itself if excellence is followed. This approach to studies is sneered upon by the dean of the college, Professor Virumandi "Virus" Santhanam (Sathyaraj). Virus and the faculty favor Pari's classmate Srivatsan alias Silencer (Sathyan) who believes in mindless rote learning over understanding to reach his goals of corporate status. Pari constantly spars with Virus and Silencer due to their differences in their educational approaches.Pari falls in love with Virus' daughter Ria (Ileana D'Cruz), a medical student when he, Venkat and Senthil accidentally gatecrash her elder sister Swetha's (Anuya Bhagvath) wedding reception to obtain a free meal. Ria is not impressed with Pari's antics and complains to her father about them. Virus becomes furious with Pari and his friends and tries to break their friendship by claiming that the "rich" Pari is a bad influence on the "less privileged" Venkat and Senthil. While Venkat refuses to break his friendship with Pari, Senthil believes Virus and distances himself from Pari, though they reconcile when Pari saves the life of Senthil's paralyzed father, who had suffered a heart attack, by taking him to hospital on Ria's scooter when the ambulance had not arrived on time. Ria too appreciates Pari's practicality and concern for others and reciprocates Pari's feelings. In the yearly exam, Pari stands first in his class, while both Venkat and Senthil come last.Three years later, during their final year, Pari, Venkat and Senthil break into Virus's house drunk one night to allow Pari to propose to Ria. Venkat and Senthil, who are both drunk, cause a ruckus and urinate on the front door before fleeing. Virus notices Senthil and the next day, he threatens to expel him unless he snitches on Pari. Not wanting to betray his friend or let down his family, Senthil attempts suicide by jumping from Virus' office window and ends up in a coma. However, Senthil soon recovers and following his recovery, he discards his fear of the future. His frankness impresses the interviewers from a company during a campus placement drive and they hire him. Meanwhile, Venkat successfully convinces his parents to allow him to pursue his wildlife photography dream.Virus, enraged at Senthil's success, sets an extremely hard final exam to fail Senthil, as the job offer is contingent on graduation. When Ria learns of her father's plan, she helps Pari and Venkat to leak the question paper by providing them with the keys to her father's office. However, Virus catches them and expels them as well as Senthil on the spot. Ria angrily confronts her father, revealing that her late brother committed suicide because he was unable to get into IEC as his father had desired, despite having ambitions of becoming a writer. Meanwhile, Swetha, who is pregnant, goes into labour. A heavy thunderstorm cuts all power and floods the streets, making it impossible for the ambulance to reach Swetha. Pari, Venkat and Senthil deliver the baby using available equipment and an inverter developed by Pari, with Ria instructing him via VoIP. After the newborn baby is apparently stillborn, Pari manages to resuscitate the baby. Virus forgives Pari and his friends, and allows them to write their final exams. After the convocation however, Pari disappears and goes into seclusion.Ten years later, Venkat, who is now a successful wildlife photographer and Senthil, who is married, has a good middle class life, and works as a software engineer in the company he was ten years ago set out on a journey to Ooty to find Pari, since he is last claimed to be found there by Silencer. They are joined by Silencer, who is now a wealthy and successful professional businessman, who is a vice president in his own company, while also being married and having kids in the United States, who is looking to seal a deal with Kosaksi Pasapugazh, a famous scientist and prospective business associate. Silencer's main intention in finding Pari is to see whether Pari is more successful than him; they had made a bet in their first year of engineering on who would be more successful with their study approaches. However, when they reach Pari's house in Ooty, they find a completely different man: the real Panchavan Parivendan (S. J. Surya).Confronting Parivendan, Venkat and Senthil learn that their friend was actually a destitute servant boy nicknamed Pappu. Pappu, who worked in Parivendan's household, loved learning, while Parivendan disliked studies. After noticing the boy's intelligence, Parivendan's father (Ajay Rathnam) agreed to allow Pappu to study in his place instead of working as a servant. In return, Parivendan would pocket Pappu's qualifications and after graduating, Pappu should cease all contact with him and his family. Parivendan reveals that Pappu is now a schoolteacher in Dhanushkodi. Later, Venkat and Senthil discover that as "Pari" had disappeared, Ria had decided to marry her former boyfriend - a price obsessed banker whom she had dumped when "Pari" made her realize that he loves his expensive items more than her. Venkat and Senthil rescue Ria from her wedding in Coimbatore and they, along with Silencer, drive to Dhanushkodi.At "Pari's" school, Venkat and Senthil reunite with their long-lost friend, Ria and "Pari" rekindle their romance, and Silencer mocks "Pari" for becoming a lowly schoolteacher. He asks him to sign a "Declaration of Defeat" document for losing the bet. On seeing "Pari"'s signature, Silencer realizes that "Pari" is actually Kosaksi Pasupugazh, and he accepts defeat.

            An ambulance driver, a medical-broker, a hospital HR (Pasanga Sivakumar) and a surgeon, were mysteriously abducted at dawn. Alerted by the incidents, Ratnavel (Sathyaraj), a police officer with Tamil Nadu Police nabs the suspect. As the interrogation begins the suspect explains his motive, Maaran (Vijay), popularly known as 5 rupees doctor, as he charges similar amount for treating patients from everyone, arrives for a medical seminar only to be mistaken at Paris Airport due to his cultural identity. After the seminar, Maaran displeases Arjun Zachariah (Hareesh Peradi), another doctor from Chennai, and his offer to team up with him, but develops mutual romantic feelings with his assistant, Anu Pallavi (Kajal Aggarwal). He invites Pallavi and her nagging boss to his magic show, where Arjun is killed deliberately in presumed magic-gone-wrong, shocking his friend Daniel Arockiyaraj (S. J. Surya).After arriving back to Chennai, Maaran gets betrothed to Tara (Samantha), a media anchor. When an autodriver's school-going daughter met with accident, the treatment is delayed deliberately resulting in her death and suicide of her mother. With the help of Vadivu (Vadivelu), the people behind this incident were abducted, tortured and killed. Deducing the events, Daniel's henchmen traps Maaran, but gets thrashed by Vetri (brother of Maaran), who body swaps Maaran and thus gets caught to the police and reveals himself as a magician who killed Arjun in Paris, for his inhumanely approach in medical profession. Vetri then escapes and convinces Pallavi. As Daniel reaches out to Maaran, holding Tara and Sarala as hostage to find the whereabouts of Vetri, the latter traces Vadivu and confronts Vetri. At the same time, Ratnavel reaches blind magician Salim Ghosh (Sangili Murugan) to know the truth.In 1970's, Vetrimaaran, a village wrestler marries Aishwarya (Nithya Menen), a Punjabi and comes back to his native place, Manoor (Madurai district) with his newborn kid (Maaran). He successfully chases out people who wish to build industry, and decides for a temple only to be thwarted by a fire accident resulting in death of kids due to lack of hospital. When Vetrimaaran, Aishwarya and the villagers, finally decides to go for building a hospital Daniel and Arjun were made as the chief doctors of the hospital and ownership also transferred. The hospital soon becomes famous for its free medical treatment to all. However, it soon turns out that Daniel and Arjun were crooks who were after money, and they perform a Caesarean section on Aishwarya when she was in labour with her second child with the intention of extracting more money from Vetrimaaran, even though she could deliver the child normally. While she is fast losing a lot of blood during the operation, that, along with an overdose of anesthesia, leads to her death, and the child was declared stillborn, before she spills the beans on Daniel and Arjun. Determined, Vetrimaaran was beaten to death by Daniel and his henchmen, who also shatter a glass bottle on his son's head, due to which Maaran is unable to recover what happened before he was hit on head; he was safely placed into a Chennai-bound lorry before Vetrimaaran's death.Meanwhile, the second child (Vetri) of Vetrimaaran did not turn out to be stillborn. He was adopted, and taught all the magic tricks from Salim Ghosh. As Maaran reconciles with Vetri, the police arrive and presumably arrest Vetri. However, when Daniel confronts Vetri in prison, it's revealed that he's actually Maaran, as the brothers switched places before the police arrived. Panicked, Daniel calls his nephew, Sesha, who went to threaten Maaran, who is actually Vetri. Vetri slits Sesha's wrist, who runs off, trying to get help. Daniel goes to confront Vetri, who gets hit by Kasi, Daniel's henchman who killed Vetrimaaran. He shows up with an unconscious Maaran. The two brothers, though, spring back up to life, and kill Daniel and Kasi together. Vetri is then arrested for his role in the murders, and sentenced to prison. Before going to jail, he declares that he would continue with the "cleansing process" until all doctors and hospital staff indulging in corrupt practices are eliminated. In prison, Vetri contemplates a television news report in which a young girl had died due to negligent medical treatment, before vanishing off.

            A young journalist Bharathi (Genelia D'Souza), along with two of her friends, investigate a series of terrorist attacks which have taken place in Chennai and also illegal activities like women trafficking. When they are caught video-recording illicit activities happening in a secluded house one night by a group of thugs, they attempt to flee from them. While Bharathi's friends are killed, Bharathi manages to escape despite being stabbed by one of the thugs. But after the attack on Bharathi and her friends, the thugs' vehicle explodes due to a small mishap when a matchstick falls over petrol packets stored in the vehicle, killing all the thugs. Bharathi comes up with a new idea to eradicate society's evils by creating and propagating a fictional character called "Velayudham" who wants to clean up the city of terrorism and other illegal activities.The scene then shifts to a village called Pavunoor, where a milk vendor named Velayudham alias Velu (Vijay) is residing with his younger sister Kaveri (Saranya Mohan), whom he loves dearly. He has a cousin Vaidehi (Hansika Motwani), who is infatuated by him. One day, Velu, Kaveri and Vaidehi leave for Chennai to collect money from a chit fund for Kaveri's marriage. At the Chennai Egmore railway station, Velu's money is stolen by Speedu (Santhanam), a petty thief. He pursues Speedu on a motorbike parked at the station and manages to get back his money, but moments after alighting from the bike, the bike explodes. The parked bike had a bomb which was meant to ensure a terrorist attack at the railway station, and thus, Velu inadvertently thwarted a deadly terrorist attack which would have killed several people. After a few more incidents where Velu unknowingly prevents more terrorist attacks, he comes to the attention of Bharathi. She convinces him to take up the role of Velayudham and provide hope to the people. In the avatar of Velayudham, Velu starts to eradicate the evils that pertain within the society such as corruption, prostitution and terrorism among others. He soon gains wide support and acceptance among the public and even the police.A few months later, Velu returns to Pavunoor for Kaveri's marriage. Unknown to him, the leader of a terrorist group Musafir Ibrahim (Abhimanyu Singh) follows him to the village. Ibrahim wants to kill him since he, in the garb of Velayudham, had thwarted every terrorist attack he had planned in Chennai. On the day of Kaveri's marriage, a bomb planted by Ibrahim at Velu's house explodes, killing Kaveri.A few days after Kaveri's death, a grieving Velu learns from Bharathi that the corrupt Home Minister of Tamil Nadu Ulaganathan (Vineet Kumar) is indirectly responsible for the terrorist attacks and also Kaveri's death. Ulaganathan allowed Ibrahim to carry out terrorist attacks in exchange for money. He even tries to gain popularity by claiming Velayudham as his idea, planning to reveal Ibrahim as Velayudham's real identity in a function at the Nehru Stadium, Chennai. Velu returns to Chennai, kills Ibrahim, exposes Ulaganathan's misdeeds and reveals himself as Velayudham to the whole world.

            Saarathi (Joseph Vijay) is the Ideal human every one would fall in love with. In a sequence of twists and turns, Saarathi comes face-to-face with Reddiyar (Kalabhavan Mani), a powerful villain, who is hungry to take Saarathi's life. What happens to Saarathi?             Marudheeran (Vijay) is the adopted son of a tribal village chief Vembunathan (Prabhu). From a young age, he notices the atrocities regularly committed on the villagers by a group of people from the neighbouring kingdom of Vedalapuram called the Vedhalams, who have supernatural powers. When he becomes an adult, he starts to protect the villagers from the Vedhalams, because of which he is well respected by the villagers.Marudheeran falls in love with his childhood sweetheart Pavazhamalli (Shruti Haasan) and both soon decide to marry. One day, Pavazhamalli is kidnapped by a group of Vedhalams, who then ransack the village and also kill Vembunathan. Marudheeran, along with his close friends Kodangi (Thambi Ramaiah) and Sama (Sathyan), begin a journey to Vedhalapuram to rescue Pavazhamalli. In the first part of the journey, he and his friends enter a part of a forest where invisible people are rumoured to live. It is actually tiny people who lived there and used arrows to drug Marudheeran and capture Sama and Kodangi. After waking up, the king Newton, decides that the must die by the sting of a poisonous spider. His daughter, Kamalakshmi, tells her father to stop, as his eyes don't say that he is a Vedhalam. After ridding him of his gag, he tells them how Vedhalams took his wife and he journeys to get her and their village's freedom back. They are overjoyed to help, since the Vedhalams eat them like side dishes. Newton introduces his cheifs, Alpha and Beta, and his wife and daughter, Flemming and Kamalakshmi. The trio tell them that they are looking for an old wise person whom the Tiny King says is a good friend of his. Alpha and Beta are assigned to take them to the old wise person and Kama asks to go and he permits her. It is revealed that the old wise person was actually an old wise turtle. The turtle tells them a bunch of senseless sentences and goes back into his humongous shell. When Kodangi insults him, he spits on him and they continue. They come to a huge gap in the valley in front of them. Following a sentence from the Turtle, he rolls a big rock with a scorpion painted on it into a big hole. A bridge connected to the other side and they went to that side. They come to a pond and don't know what to do, so Alpha suggests that they check holy texts, which he has brought, when they find a different kind of leaf. It said they have to make a tube and blow from it and a green frog will show the way. Marudheeran blew and a frog came along. They checked it again and it said you will have to lick it's back. Kodangi was voted for it. He licked it and it showed the way to Vedhalapuram. When Marudheeran goes to retrieve his sword,he hears a girl's scream. Marudheeran rescues Manthagini (Hansika Motwani), the princess of Vedhalapuram, from a panther. This is noticed by Jalatharangan (Sudeep), the Commander-in-Chief of Vedhalapuram. Marudheeran seems to recognize his name "Thalapathi" as the man who cut his adopted father's arm. On the pretext of being medicine makers, Marudheeran, Kodangi, Sama, Alpha, Beta and Kama enter the Vedhalapuram palace, where they meet Queen Yavanarani (Sridevi), the cruel queen of Vedhalapuram who is also a sorceress. She allows them to stay at the palace and soon Marudheeran wins the support of the Queen and the love of Manthagini with his fighting prowess and resilience. Yavanarani announces the engagement of Marudheeran with Manthagini.Later, Marudheeran finds out that he himself is a Vedhalam. Marudheeran was the son of Pulivendhan (Vijay), the prince of Vedhalapuram and Queen Yavanarani's brother. When he stood up to Jalatharangan, who used to terrorise the villagers with the help of his men, Jalatharangan killed him and his wife Pushpa (Nanditha). Marudheeran also finds out that Yavanarani is actually a puppet Queen under the influence of evil magical power emanating from Jalatharangan's ring. Due to the evil magical influence, Yavanarani developed magical powers as well as her tyrannical behaviour. She performs yearly Kanya Puja to boost her magical powers. After Yavanarani performs the Kanya Puja for the eighteenth consecutive year (this time on Pavazhamalli), Jalatharangan has planned to eliminate her and take over the throne.Marudheeran fights Jalatharangan and kills him. But before he dies, Jalatharangan opens his ring, releasing all the evil magical power so that Yavanarani could continue to rule Vedhalapuram as a tyrantess without his control after his death. Marudheeran realises that the Queen can be returned to normal only if her staff, which is the source of her magical power, is destroyed. He and Manthagini find her performing the Kanya Puja on Pavazhamalli. After a bitter sword fight with the Queen, he manages to destroy the staff, thus restoring the Queen to her normal self.
