            Eugene's life with Down Syndrome is very simplistic and at times quite patronizing. As a young man he goes to school by himself (to a special education room for disabled students), where he is bullied by the "normal guys" and ignored by the girl he likes. He rakes leaves for neighbours to earn extra cash, and spends the rest of his time at home with his terminally-ill mother. His goal is to buy videogames and find a supposed "pot of god" at the end of the rainbow. When he discovers that his mother will soon be evicted, he runs away to rural ontario to attempt to track down some money to save the apartment. Unknown to him, his mother passes away quickly after his departure.Eventually Eugene meets a quirky old man who teaches him the art of dowsing in order to locate the hypothetical pot of gold. Eugene spends the night with him in his trailer, and accidentally discovers that his new buddy is an alcoholic. He decides to move on after his money mysteriously disappears.Along the way, his bike gets a flat tire, and he attempts to steal a new bike from a nearby residence. A strange man nearly beats him up, but upon realizing that Eugene wasn't trying to do anything wrong, the man, named Elvis, invites him to stay at his place for a while. Elvis is a washed-up punk rocker who makes extremely lewd and rude comments about women, but Eugene soon realizes that Elvis is extremely depressed about not actually forming any real strong connection or love with anyone. Elvis also dresses up in women's clothing. Eugene's first impression is that Elvis is transgendered, but Elvis just says that he's still normal enough. He then forces Eugene to call his mother, as Elvis misses his own family.Eugene eventually moves on and comes across a middle-aged hoarder with a sunny disposition and a young daughter, Anna, who also has Down Syndrome. Although Eugene and Anna awkwardly hit it off and become friends, Eugene is nervous at the prospect of sex, especially since Anna seems rather too knowledgeable, not to mention the webcam hidden in her bedroom. The excuse is that the camera is a lifeline between Anna and her "mom", but it is later revealed that Anna was probably illegally obtained as a baby, that her father isn't really her father, and that he has been using her to make porno VHS tapes for buyers. Disgusted, Eugene rescues Anna and they escape, spending the night in the woods. They share a slow dance and fall in love.As they continue onward, the couple come across a mass grave for wrecked cars. While playing in them, the brakes in one car fail, and unfortunately the car hits a tree, injuring them both. While Eugene is only mildly hurt, Anna gets a concussion and passes out. Realizing that she needs help, Eugene dig-dong-ditches a nearby neighbour and leaves Anna at the doorstep.Eugene comes across a little old lady with an estranged son. This woman is kind-hearted and nostalgic and loves sentimental trinkets from the past. Eugene breaks down and cries when he sees an Amber Alert of himself on the news. The old woman attempts to comfort him, but is shot to death by robbers. Eugene chases after both robbers and is conveniently used by one robber, who pleads for people to donate charity to the "retarded" boy. Eugene acts "retarded" on purpose at that point, in order to fool the criminals. Soon the cops find the body of the old lady, and Eugene, silent as ever, agrees to join a group home for "special kids" permanently. He proves to be more intelligent and resourceful than the others, but also more serious and sad. He still holds onto his belief in rainbows, but not that there will ever be an end of one to find.
