Big Little Lies


            Based on a true story that took place in Bakersfield, California. In 1982, Scott and Brenda Kniffen are approached by their friends, Alvin and Debbie McCuan. Debbie's stepmother, Mary Ann Barbour, is trying to get custody of their little girls, despite the fact that she is mentally ill. Mary Ann claims that Alvin and Debbie molested their children. The McCuans ask the Kniffens to testify on their behalf. They feel very sorry for their friends and agree to help in whatever way they can.Mary Ann notifies Child Protective Services that not only the McCuans, but the Kniffens are running a child sex ring involving multiple molestation. She claims that the McCuan girls told her about children being hung from hooks in the Kniffen home and tortured. Her story is so wild that the social worker is a bit skeptical, but her supervisor insists that it has to be true because children don't lie. Warrants are obtained for the arrest of the McCuans and Kniffens.Brenda is at home with her sons, Brian (age 6) and Brandon (age 9) when police arrive to arrest her. The boys are taken into protective custody and the house is torn apart looking for pornographic pictures and evidence of child molestation. Scott is arrested at his workplace. He and Brenda cannot make any sense of what has happened. They insist they are innocent but no one believes them. Brenda is severely beaten while in jail. Scott's parents, Marilyn and Dick Kniffen post bail but the boys remain in protective custody. Their parents are allowed no contact with them. The grandmothers, Marilyn and Brenda's mother Corene, are allowed a supervised visit. But Corene violates the court order not to question the boys and is arrested, charged with witness tampering. The charge is later dropped but the grandmothers are allowed no further visits.The case of the Kniffens and McCuans blows wide open, with extensive news coverage, and all are accused of multiple counts. Brandon and Brian are repeatedly questioned and at first deny any abuse. But they want to go home so badly that they start agreeing with what investigators say, thinking that will help. Instead it strengthens the case against their parents, who are already seen as guilty. Two years later, both couples are found guilty and sentenced to a total of 1000 years in prison.Brenda and Scott are sent to separate prisons. Scott's parents try to get custody of the boys, but are denied because D.A. Gindes feels they will brainwash the boys and cause them to recant. The boys spend their childhoods in many different foster homes. All appeals fail and it looks as if Scott and Brenda will remain in prison for the rest of their lives.Dick and Marilyn hired a private investigator, Denver Dunn, who is a retired police detective. He promises to look into the case but warns them it could take years. Over time, Scott and Brenda adjust to life in prison. Scott is in isolation for his own safety, but Brenda must deal with ill treatment because she is supposedly a child molester.As the years pass and her children are nearly grown, Brenda repeatedly begs the prison psychiatrist to allow them to visit her. But he refuses because she is in denial. If she will admit to even one small act of molestation, he will permit a visit. Brenda finds this ironic but won't consider admitting to something she has not done.Dunn obtains a cassette tape from an anonymous source, left from the boys' questioning sessions. All the other tapes have mysteriously disappeared. It contains evidence that the boys were coerced into saying they were molested. He tapes the tape to Andrew Snedeker and his wife; lawyers who are known for helping those falsely accused of molestation. They agree to take the case and try to get a new trial.At last the Kniffen grandparents get custody of Brian. Brandon, now a legal adult, joins the Marines. Brian recants his testimony and signs a statement, but Brandon refuses to do so. He believes the abuse took place but he can't remember it. And if it did not take place, he can't live with the guilt of what happened to his parents.The case has taken a very heavy toll on the elder Kniffens. Marilyn suddenly dies. Brandon gets leave for the funeral and is shocked to learn that his grandfather died the previous evening, in his sleep. Brian tells him he has to recant his testimony and try to get their parents out of prison. At last, urged on by Dunn, Brandon agrees.The Kniffens are granted a hearing, seeing each other and their sons for the first time since the trial. Both boys retract their testimony and Snedeker introduces the tape. The case is overturned and the Kniffens are free. They leave Bakersfield to make a new life elsewhere.

            The Ducks are being awarded junior varsity hockey scholarships to Eden Hall Academy, a prestigious prep school that coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) attended, following their victory at the Junior Goodwill Games in Los Angeles, California. Bombay announces that he will be leaving his position as coach to take a job with the Junior Goodwill Games, much to Charlie's dismay. Bombay's spot is filled by former Minnesota North Stars player Ted Orion (Jeffrey Nordling). Initially the Ducks clash with Orion's disciplinary coaching tactics and his focus on defense over scoring. Orion abandons several Duck traditions, including starting Julie Gaffney in goal over Greg Goldberg, based on Julie's superior play in tryouts, directing the team to play a defensive-minded system and strips Charlie Conway (Joshua Jackson) of his Captain's 'C', stating that the strategies the team used in the past won't work anymore. He is proven right when, in their first game, the Ducks take an embarrassing tie after losing a 9-goal lead, due to their cockiness after their initial dominance. Orion is livid, but makes a valid point (about hockey and life) when he states that the Ducks won't be able to dominate every game and have to learn how to play "two-way hockey," not choking when the game is going their way. Charlie's only consolation is meeting Linda (Margot Finley), a student petitioning to change the school's team name (The Warriors) as it perpetuates an offensive Native American stereotype. Though she initially writes him off as a mindless jock, the two start to hit it off.The team's difficulties are further compounded by the attitude towards them on the part of most of the students and parents at Eden Hall, particularly the Varsity hockey team, which Adam Banks has been recruited into. The two teams engage in an escalating prank war, culminating in an unofficial match in the school's ice rink, in which the Ducks are badly beaten. When Coach Orion forbids the old Ducks name and uniforms, declaring "The Ducks are dead", Charlie finally becomes fed up with Orion, whom he considers washed-up, and leaves the team with Fulton Reed. Greg Goldberg is made a defenseman to replace Fulton. Venting to Hans, his and Gordon's mentor, Charlie becomes further upset after Hans appears to take Orion's side. After skipping school at the Mall of America and Charlie proposing going to public schools before pursuing hockey careers, Fulton realizes he might not want to follow Charlie or play hockey for the rest of his life. He also tries to suggest Charlie rejoin the Ducks. Chagrined at that suggestion and Fulton's abandonment, Charlie is still struggling with what to do when he learns that Hans, the Ducks' friend and mentor, has passed away.Bombay returns for Hans' memorial and the next day takes Charlie back to Eden Hall. He explains to Charlie, that Orion was actually a great pro player who only left the sport because he wanted to care for his daughter, a paraplegic as a result of a car accident he was in. Bombay explains the circumstances that led to his coaching the Ducks in the first place and how it changed his life for the better, and that he told Orion that Charlie was the heart and soul of the team, and it was his hope that both Orion and Charlie would learn something from each other. Touched by this, Charlie agrees to rejoin the team.Arriving at the team bus for the next game, Charlie apologizes to Orion who, surprised by Charlie's sincerity, welcomes him back. Fulton also rejoins the team before Charlie does, apparently no longer disillusioned about hockey. Adam also decides to leave the Varsity team and return to the JV team. Prior to the bus' departure, Dean Buckley (David Selby), the school's headmaster, informs the team that its board of trustees is going to vote to revoke the Ducks' scholarships, due to the unpopularity of the decision to admit them, and their mediocre performance on the ice. The Dean offers Orion a chance to start anew with a team of his choice, but Orion refuses, going so far as to threaten resignation, and assures his team that he's going to fight the decision.At the Board of Trustees meeting, the Ducks state their case, but no one is willing to listen until Bombay arrives and threatens the group with an injunction, promising to tie up the matter in court until long after the kids have gone on to college. The board reluctantly votes to reinstate the Ducks' scholarships. When the Varsity team learns the Ducks are staying and continue their harassment, the Ducks and the Warriors agree that if Varsity beats JV in the upcoming exhibition game, JV will leave the school, but if JV wins, the official team name will be changed to the Mighty Ducks. Orion and the Ducks train hard, focusing specifically on defense around the goal. Orion returns the Ducks' jerseys right before the game, feeling that the team has finally earned them.Throughout the game, the Varsity dominates on offense, but the Ducks' newly acquired defensive skills manage to keep the game scoreless after two periods. Unable to score, the Varsity instead start to viciously check every player they can, so that the Ducks are battered going into the third period. During the second intermission, Dean Portman (Aaron Lohr), who had initially refused the school's scholarship, returns to the team, adding a needed spark. Late in the game, the Ducks get two penalties and must play 5 vs 3. During the time-out, Orion renames Charlie captain and tells him to go for the win if the opportunity presents itself. With seconds left in the game, Charlie is on a breakaway, but in a surprise move passes the puck back to Goldberg, who scores into a wide-open net as time expires, securing a 1-0 victory for the Ducks.Following the victory, Charlie embraces Orion and spots Bombay who has attended the game. They both look across to the Warriors emblem, which is suddenly replaced by an unrolling banner with the Ducks' logo, officially changing the team name to the Eden Hall Mighty Ducks. Upon seeing this, Linda kisses Charlie. Bombay then departs the rink with a smile, knowing his protege has matured.
