            Bridget Jones (adorably played by Renee Zellweger) is an unattached 30-something who realizes she's got to change her life. After a New Year's Eve, she vows that this new year is the one in which she'll get her act together. She'll lose weight, she'll smoke and drink less, and she'll document it all in a diary.Complicating everything is Bridget's attraction to her boss, Daniel Cleaver (played by Hugh Grant), a man of questionable character. They launch an affair and Bridget falls for him head over heels, only to realize later that her feelings aren't reciprocated, when her boss gets engaged to another woman. Thrown into the mix is barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), who admittedly finds Bridget attractive but whom Bridget finds repulsive.It won't be until Bridget clearly sees the truth about Daniel, that she also clearly sees Mark for the man he is, and her feelings for him for what they really are.

            The film starts with Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) sitting in her London apartment listening to "All By Myself" while holding a birthday cupcake. She is turning 43, and she finds herself alone. Instead of moping, she changes the song to "Jump Around" and starts getting funky.Bridget narrates details how her birthday really began. First, she gets a phone call from her mom Pamela (Gemma Jones) that now that she is in her early 40's, her time to have a baby is running out. She goes to a church to the funeral of her former lover Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). A number of his former girlfriends are in attendance as well. As she sits with her friends, Bridget spots her old boyfriend Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) with his new wife Camilla (Agni Scott). After the funeral, Bridget and Mark run into each other to catch up for a brief, awkward moment as he introduces Bridget and Camilla to each other, and then they part ways.Bridget currently works as a television producer for her anchor friend Miranda (Sarah Solemani). Bridget speaks to Miranda as she interviews a guest, but Bridget takes a phone call during the segment, so Miranda repeats whatever Bridget says on the phone, which in this case makes Miranda's interview regarding the death of a fascist dictator seem unintentionally sympathetic. To complicate things further, a younger manager named Alice (Kate O'Flynn) is hired, and it's said that she's been known to fire people older than her.Miranda invites Bridget to go out for her birthday, but she would rather spend it with her other close friends. Unfortunately, they're all too busy with their own kids. Not ready to get discouraged, Bridget decides to take Miranda up on her offer, and she joins her on a trip to a music festival. When they arrive, Miranda tells Bridget to sleep with the first man she meets. Bridget falls face-first in the mud, and she meets a handsome stranger named Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), who helps her to her feet.At night, Bridget and Miranda get drunk and bump into Ed Sheeran and ask him to take a picture for them, though he initially thinks they want one with him, but they don't even recognize him at first. They later attend his concert, with Miranda rolling around in a giant hamster ball. Bridget stumbles into a yurt that she thinks is hers and Miranda's, but it's Jack's. After some flirtation, they have sex. In the morning, Bridget wakes up in bed alone.Upon returning home, Bridget attends the christening of her friend Jude's (Shirley Henderson) child. She runs into Mark again as they are both asked to be the child's godparents. Mark mentions that he and Camilla are divorcing. They attend a party later, leading to them reconnecting and eventually having sex. Afterwards, Mark mentions he is traveling the next day. He wakes up the next morning to find a note from Bridget saying they shouldn't continue this relationship, citing reasons as to why it doesn't work between them.A few weeks later, Bridget notices she is gaining weight. She talks to her friend Shazza (Sally Phillips) over her recent flings and mentions using expired vegan condoms. Bridget takes a pregnancy test at work with Miranda and discovers that she is pregnant. Although excited, she visits OB/GYN Dr. Rawlings (Emma Thompson) and realizes she has no idea who the father is.Alice demands more news stories worthy of viewers at work. When Miranda discovers that Jack is a billionaire mogul that created a successful dating site (Qwantify Love), she tells Bridget and plans to have him on the show as a guest, but also to try and sneak a hair sample off the man to use in a DNA test. Jack appears on the show, thinking he's there to talk about his book and algorithms on finding love, but the ladies try to keep him on interesting topics, which makes the interview come off clumsy. After the show, Bridget and Jack meet again, with her admitting that she is pregnant, but never mentioning that the baby could also belong to Mark. Luckily, Bridget manages to get some hair from Jack taken by the stylist.Bridget talks to her dad Colin (Jim Broadbent) about her situation. She apologizes for putting herself in this predicament, but Colin is very understanding.Bridget goes to find Mark in a courthouse as he is representing a group of women in a highly publicized case. Later, she tells Mark about her pregnancy, but she fails to mention Jack, so Mark thinks the baby is his as well.Jack starts to get involved in Bridget's life as he tries to support what he thinks is his baby. She also decides not to do the DNA test right away as she worries she may suffer a miscarriage. She even makes Dr. Rawlings do appointments twice with both possible fathers to keep stringing them along.Bridget's job holds an event to introduce new things in their work. She invites Jack but is surprised when Mark shows up as well. Bridget's presentation turns into a disaster when it shows men mooning the camera, and the show suffers technical difficulties. After this, Mark and Jack end up meeting and get on as they admire each other's work, but Bridget is forced to admit to both men over dinner that they are potential fathers to her child, and she doesn't know who the legitimate father is. Jack doesn't seem to have a problem with this, but Mark leaves the restaurant feeling upset.Mark tries out Jack's dating site and tries to see if he's a match with Bridget. Their result is less than 10%. He puts Jack and Bridget together and sees they have over 90% in compatibility, to his chagrin.Over the next few months, Jack and Mark help Bridget out however they can as her pregnancy moves along, such as attending a pre-natal class where both men are mistaken as a gay couple with Bridget as their surrogate. Mark later finds that Jack brought Bridget to the hospital when she was experiencing cramps, leading to a heated discussion between the two where Jack says he wasn't "dressed for the occasion" when he hooked up with Bridget. Thinking Jack might really be the father, Mark steps out of the picture, albeit heartbroken.Jack attempts to move his relationship with Bridget forward by suggesting that they move in together so that he can take care of the baby with her. Bridget notes that it may get complicated if the baby turns out to be Mark's. Jack admits that he may have been responsible for Mark leaving when he suggested that the baby could be his (Jack's). Bridget goes to Mark's house to talk to him but leaves when she sees Camilla there.Bridget reaches her ninth month of pregnancy. At work, Miranda is supposed to interview a Korean general, but Bridget brings her the man's chauffeur instead, leading to a thoroughly unpleasant interview. Alice is preparing to fire Bridget for her screw-ups, but Bridget tries to take it a step further and quit herself. She immediately regrets it.Now jobless and upset, Bridget goes out to get food. Her card gets retained by an ATM, and she is left alone in the rain. Mark shows up and helps her. The two spend more time together, and he tells Bridget that he really is divorcing Camilla, and she was there to pick up her stuff. They are about to kiss, but Bridget's water breaks. Mark's phone starts ringing, and, thinking it's a work thing, he smashes his phone out of what he thinks is a bold romantic gesture...except they needed the phone to call a cab.Bridget and Mark ride in Gianni's pizza truck to the hospital, only to get stuck in a traffic jam. Mark decides to carry Bridget to the hospital since the contractions are making walking difficult, but he starts to get tired because Bridget is so heavy. Jack shows up and helps take Bridget to the hospital. Bridget's parents and her work friends learn that she is going into labor, and they all celebrate.At the hospital, both men try helping Bridget, but she leans more toward Mark. He promises to love her and the baby, no matter whose it is. Bridget ends up giving birth to a healthy baby boy. Her parents and friends show up in her room. Dr. Rawlings then calls the men in for the DNA test. They wish each other good luck.A year later, Bridget is getting married. As she walks up to the altar, Jack steps out with Bridget's son, William. It turns out she is really marrying Mark, and the baby is his. They all head onto the reception afterwards, with Bridget now feeling more fulfilled with her life.The final shot shows a newspaper headline that states that Daniel Cleaver is, in fact, alive.

            Helena, an older woman whose husband has left her after 40 years of marriage, goes to a psychic named Cristal for advice. Cristal points out that Helena is constantly blaming herself for the problems in her life, but she sees better times coming for her.As a narrator elucidates, Helena's husband Alfie had suddenly become terrified of dying and then became obsessed with fitness. He put himself through a complete body makeover and wanted out of the marriage. As a result, Helena had a breakdown.Helena's daughter Sally is married to Roy, who left his pursuit of a medical degree to become a novelist. His first book was a success, only his work ever since has not been as accomplished. As he struggles to complete his latest book, he becomes preoccupied with a young lady neighbor whom he can see in an apartment across the street.Alfie is not exactly happy living like he is 30: he eats alone, women his age are frail, and he does not relate to the young people he meets. Yet he suddenly discovers a much younger woman whom he wants to marry.Alfie's new engagement upsets Helena deeply, but Cristal foresees that he will not be happy with the new woman. Cristal further envisions that Helena will meet a handsome new stranger.When Sally and Roy meet Alfie's new fiancé Charmaine, they are shocked by how scantily clad she is, and further by their speedy engagement. As the narrator reveals, Alfie has not mentioned that he initially hired her as a prostitute and then fell in love with her. Now he wants to have a son with her, because his only son died, and he has persuaded Charmaine to marry him for practical reasons.Some friends hire Helena as a personal shopper, through whom she meets a rather unattractive older man, Jonathan, whose wife recently died.Roy waves to the woman in the apartment across the street and learns her name is Dia. He invites her to lunch nearby and is unabashedly flirtatious, in spite of her engagement to Alan, who sometimes visits her but lives in Brussels.Sally takes an assistant position in an art gallery and develops a crush on her new boss, Greg. One night he has an extra ticket to the opera and invites Sally to join him. Afterward he reveals that his marriage is not so happy, and though Sally pauses for a long goodbye, they do not kiss.Roy happily spends many afternoons with Dia. His increasing flirtation has been flattering to her, and causing her doubt about her love for Alan.Alfie gets an expansive and expensive apartment for Charmaine. He takes Viagra in anticipation of having sex with her, but she is dismayed that he needs to wait a while to achieve the desired effect.Sally learns that a painter she has referred to Greg for a gallery exhibit is having an affair with him, and enjoying it quite a lot. Sally is crushed, and rushes home to tell Roy that she hates Greg and wants to open her own gallery. Just then Roy gets a call from his publisher with the bad news that his latest manuscript has been rejected. Complicating matters further, Helena shows up convinced that she has had a past life. Roy storms out, and Sally tells Helena she wants out of the marriage.Roy then gets even worse news: some of his friends have been in a terrible accident, and one of them, a budding novelist, has died. At first Roy is shaken, but then he remembers how great his friend's latest manuscript had been, so he decides to steal it and use it as his own.Alfie has trouble keeping Charmaine happy, so he agrees to go with her to a nightclub, where she dances with a younger guy.After Sally tells Roy she wants a divorce, he begins spending even more time with Dia, making her extremely conflicted about her imminent marriage to Alan.Charmaine buys new furs without asking Alfie, who only hints at the massive financial debt he is in.Dia calls off the wedding, greatly upsetting both her and Alan's families.Helena is excited to introduce Sally to Jonathan at the occult bookstore he owns. Sally expresses dismay about their romance, to which Helena responds, "He may not be a tall dark stranger, but hes become my stranger." Sally asks Helena for money to start her own gallery, and Helena tells her to confess her affections to Greg.Sally tells Greg that she is leaving his gallery, and that she had begun to feel close to him, seeking to see if he felt the same way toward her. He admits to his affair with her friend, and does not give Sally the reciprocal attraction she wants.Alfie sees Charmaine walking out of a hotel with a guy from their gym, having clearly slept with him.Roy moves in with Dia, and is soon happy to receive great praise from his publisher about the manuscript he has submitted, which of course is plagiarized.Alfie takes Helena to an old favorite restaurant and asks her to begin again, admitting he has messed up his recent life. Helena points out that he is married, and tells him that he will have another life after this one. Plus she is dating Jonathan, who shares her spiritual ideas.At a séance, Jonathan seems to make contact with his dead wife. Helena presses him to ask her for approval of their relationship, and Jonathan says that he is still in love with her, making Helena quite upset.Roy introduces Dia to his friends, and is distressed to learn that the author whose work he has stolen is in fact not dead but in a coma, with a good chance of recovery.Alfie catches Charmaine in flagrante delicto with the man from their gym, leading to a fistfight between the two men. Later, in trying to make him feel better, Charmaine tells Alfie she is pregnant. Alfie immediately distrusts her, and insists he wants a paternity test.Helena tells Sally that her relationship with Jonathan has ended, but Cristal is optimistic for her. Sally explains she needs a bigger loan for her new gallery, but Helena says Cristal has told her that the stars are not aligned for any large financial transaction. Sally becomes incredulous and tells Helena that Cristal is a fraud.Roy goes to see his comatose author friend with his other buddies. They try to stimulate him by speaking to see if he will respond, and when one of them mentions Roy's supposed novel, the author seems to move his eyes. Roy walks away, ruminating.The narrator tells us that the story is now closing. Jonathan returns to Helena to tell him that his widow has agreed he can marry her. As with Cristal, she speculates that sometimes illusions work better than medicine.

            It is another year in the life of Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger). Things are looking up for our heroine since we last saw her. She is losing weight, has quit smoking (at least as far as her boyfriend is concerned), and she is in a completely fulfilling relationship with barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).Bridget also has a successful career in television where she is an on air personality for the tabloid TV show "Sit Up, Britain." As we join her she is in the midst of filming a story requiring her to sky dive over the country side. After falling out of the plane and almost forgetting to pull the rip cord she finally lands safely in a pen filled with pigs.Afraid that her boss is upset over her clumsiness, she is summoned to his office only to learn that Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) now works for the station too and that her boss wants them to team up on some travel pieces for the network.Not willing to be content with bliss, she becomes suspicious of Mark when he cancels their dinner date one evening. Her friends convince her that he is having an affair with the very attractive Rebecca who works at the law firm. She goes to his house to confront him and after climbing the ledge to peek into the window she falls from the roof into the bushes and is then greeted at the door by Rebecca who lets her in to the house only to find that Mark is having a meeting with some associates.Seeing that she is under stress Mark invites her on a weekend ski getaway but as soon as they arrive we discover two things - Bridget has lied about her skiing ability and Rebecca is also there.The next week Mark invites Bridget to a very important dinner given by the firm. Bridget manages to arrive late in a state of disarray and insults some of his coworkers. At dinner she begins to feel that she is out of Mark's league and that she is nothing more than an embarrassment to him. On the way home Bridget admonishes Mark for never sticking up for her in front of his pompous friends and then leaves.Weeks go by and Mark does not call. Reluctantly Bridget accepts a project working with Daniel on a piece in Thailand. On the plane Daniel saves her from the rigors of coach class by bringing her into first class with him and explains that he is no longer a skirt chaser and that she was the best thing that ever happened to him.While in Thailand, Bridget's friend Shazzer who has accompanied her on the trip meets a very attractive young man named Jed who has a love of hallucinogenic mushrooms which he slips into Bridget's food.Daniel finds Bridget at the beach in a euphoric state of mind and invites her up to his room. Almost succumbing to his advances she realizes just in time that if she sleeps with him it will be truly over between she and Mark. As she leaves she runs into a prostitute who is arriving for her nightly appointment with Daniel.The next day Bridget and Shazzer pack up to leave and to hurry things along Bridget agrees to carry the Thai Ceremonial Snake Bowl that Jed has left with them in her bag. At airport customs it is discovered that the bowl is filled with cocaine and Bridget is immediately arrested for attempting to transport illegal drugs. Daniel upon seeing the trouble that Bridget is in shrugs and gets on the plane.In prison Bridget immediately befriends the other inmates and upon hearing their stories of forced prostitution and abuse that they have had in their relationships she realizes that she had it pretty good with Mark.Days later she is pulled from the holding cell and is taken to meet with her attorney - it is Mark who tells her that he is merely the messenger and that the Thai government has agreed to show her leniency.Back home Mark confronts Daniel and asks him if he knew that Bridget had been arrested in Thailand. When he admits that he did - Mark drags him outside and they have a fight in the streets ending with both spilling into a fountain in the courtyard.Arriving in England Bridget discovers that Mark went to great lengths to hunt down Jed and extradite him so that she could be set free. She runs to Mark's house only to find Rebecca there who admits that it is Bridget whom she has had a crush on all this time and not Mark. Rebecca even proves it by kissing Bridget who is flattered, but politely turns her down.Bridget takes a taxi to Mark's office and is splashed by several passing cars. Soak and wet, she searches the building and happens upon Mark in a meeting with several important officials. They go out into the corridor and Mark finally proposes to her.In the country Bridget's parents have a ceremony to renew their vows. As they are leaving her mother tosses the bouquet and Bridget falling backwards still manages to catch it. Same ol' "Bridg" but she is now willing to look to the future and is ready to accept that she is indeed finally happy.
