Derrick Gilliam was born to Joann Gilliam and Earl Black in Lansing, Michigan. He was raised by his stepfather Willie Florence and mother Joann Gilliam. Derrick was a former High School and College basketball star at Lansing Sexton High School, Highland Park Community College and Sam Houston State University. Derrick played professional basketball over seas in Paraguay and Puerto Rico and worked out with the Miami Heat players Voshon Lenard, Jamal Mashburn, and Tim Hardaway. Although Derrick went to college on a basketball scholarship acting has always been a love of his.
