The Serpent and the Rainbow


            Belgium, December 16, 1944: First Lieutenant Thomas Hart (Farrell) is captured by German commandos during the opening of the Battle of the Bulge.Taken to a local prison, his boots are confiscated and he is left naked in a cell. Threatened with frostbite and pneumonia, he is coerced into divulging intelligence to his German interrogator.He and many other Americans are later transferred by train to a prisoner of war camp. While en route, a flight of P-51 Mustangs attack the station. Since the painted letters POW on the top of the train are covered by thick snow, the Mustangs fire on the train, causing some of the POWs to be killed by friendly fire. To save themselves, the POWs leave the train, spell POW with their bodies, and prevent further strafing.After arriving at the camp, Hart is debriefed by the ranking American officer, Colonel William McNamara (Willis). When McNamara asks if he cooperated with the Germans after he was captured, Hart denies it. McNamara knows this to be a lie, since he knows Hart was held for three days after seeing only a Level 1 interrogator. He does not reveal this to Hart and sends him to bunk in a barracks for enlisted men, rather than allow him to bunk with the other officers.Two Tuskegee Airmen are brought to the camp, Second Lieutenants, Lincoln A. Scott (Howard) and Lamar T. Archer (Vicellous Reon Shannon). They are the only blacks in the platoon, and their situation is compounded by their status as officers. Staff Sergeant Vic W. Bedford (Cole Hauser), a vicious racist, is their primary antagonist.Later, a spike from the fence, which could be used as a weapon, is found in Archer's bunk. The Germans drag him out, and, as he stands proud and defiant, shoot him, claiming that he was trying to escape. Directly after that, a radio used by the Americans to receive coded messages via the BBC is found and destroyed.Bedford is himself later found dead. Scott is seen standing over the body and is accused of killing him in revenge for Bedford framing Archer. A law student at Yale before the war, Hart is appointed by McNamara to defend the accused pilot at his court-martial, a trial to which the camp commandant, Oberst Werner Visser (Marcel Iures), agrees.Visser gives Hart a manual on US Army court-martial proceedings, furthering the conflict between him and McNamara when he uses the rule book to question the Colonel's conducting of the trial. On the witness stand, the angered Scott gives an emotional address on the treatment of Blacks like himself who joined up to serve their country with honor but are treated with disrespect in return.Late one night, Hart notices a fellow POW acting suspiciously and follows him to a room behind the theater where the trial is taking place. There he discovers a tunnel being dug. McNamara reveals to Hart that the "defense", like the trial itself, is a sham, an elaborate distraction to hide a planned escape and attack on a nearby ammunition plant which the Allies mistakenly believe to be a shoe factory. It is revealed that Bedford planted the spike in Archer's bunk, and, in return for the guards executing him for it, gave them the location of the secret radio. It is also revealed that Bedford planned to escape with forged German documents, money and clothes, likely in return for telling the Germans about McNamara's plan. McNamara realized this and killed Bedford to prevent it.Hart is shocked that McNamara as a senior officer would sacrifice fellow Americans to perpetuate this. McNamara reminds Hart that they are at war, and in war sometimes one man must be sacrificed to save the lives of many. Hart acknowledges this, but retorts that it is McNamara's duty to ensure that he, not Scott, is the sacrifice. Disgusted, McNamara says that Hart knows nothing about duty, in reference to how Hart gave in to a Level 1 interrogator after three days, whereas McNamara was tortured for a month.On the last day of the trial, McNamara and 34 others feign food poisoning in order to be excused from the closing arguments. They then slip down the escape tunnel. As he is about to go down, McNamara overhears Hart's closing speech. In order to save Scott, Hart announces that he killed Bedford.Visser orders everyone out and announces that Hart will be shot there and then. After the head count is short by 35 prisoners, Visser suspects an escape plot and locates the tunnel. Now fully aware of the deception, he furiously orders everybody involved in the trial to be shot. But before the sentence is carried out, McNamara, moved by Hart's selfless sacrifice, voluntarily returns to the camp to accept responsibility. At that moment the factory blows up and the other escapees scatter away.Visser holds McNamara accountable and personally executes him on the spot, sparing the remaining prisoners. Scott leads the salute to McNamara's dead body. Three months later, the German army surrenders to the Allies and the prison camp is liberated.
    

Hart's War

            Late one night at the Russell Square station in the London Underground, university students Patricia Wilson (Sharon Gurney) and her American exchange student boyfriend Alex Campbell (David Ladd) find an unconscious man (James Cossins) collapsed on the stairwell. Fearing the man may be diabetic, Patricia checks his wallet and finds a card that reads James Manfred, OBE. Alex and Patricia inform a police officer about Manfred, Alex and the officer return to the stairwell to Alex's surprise find that Manfred has vanished. Inspector Calhoun (Donald Pleasence) is assigned to look into the disappearance. Calhoun antagonistically questions Alex, who asserts the man was a drunk, and suggests he and Patricia robbed the man.While discussing the case of the missing Manfred, Calhoun's colleague Detective Sgt. Rogers (Norman Rossington) tells him about the history of the London Underground, particularly the Victorian railway workers who constructed the tunnels under dire conditions, and an urban legend that a group of descendants who survived an 1892 cave-in still live below ground in an abandoned section of the tunnels.Meanwhile, one of the last surviving members of a family of these railway workers (Hugh Armstrong) watches his sick, pregnant, female companion (June Turner) die; they have survived since birth in the underground by resorting to cannibalism of the railway patrons. In an empty chamber, Manfred's body lies, mutilated beside other decomposing bodies of various victims. The man laments the woman's death, as he is now left in complete solitude. The man goes into a rage and brutally murders three Underground maintenance workers in, taking one to his lair to feed on.Calhoun remains suspicious of Alex and Patricia, and calls Alex in for repeated interrogations. After seeing a film one night, Alex and Patricia take a train home and get off at Holborn station. While de-boarding, Patricia realizes she forgot her textbooks on the train. Alex attempts to retrieve them, but the doors close before he can exit; just as the train leaves, Patricia yells through the window that she will meet him at home. Once the train exits the platform, Patricia is attacked by the cannibal man and incapacitated.When Patricia fails to meet him at their flat, Alex seeks help from Calhoun, who is dismissive of him. Alex returns to Holborn station to search for Patricia, and enters the tunnel against the orders of a station attendant. He manages to breach an abandoned area of the Underground that had caved in, and finds the skeletal remnants of the miners who worked there over a century ago.Meanwhile, Patricia awakens in the cannibal's lair. She finds him to be aphasic and unable to communicate with her. When he begins grabbing her aggressively, she hits him over the head and manages to flee, escaping into a tunnel. He finally corners her and attempts to communicate with her, speaking in the only line that he knows: "mind the doors"- having heard the phrase repeatedly from train conductors at the tube stations. But the man becomes frustrated when Patricia does not reply and he violently attacks her.Alex stumbles upon the scene and begins fighting with the cannibal, stomping him on the head. Patricia, however, begs Alex not to hurt him, and they watch as the cannibal stumbles into a passageway. Calhoun, Rogers and several other police detectives who have entered the Underground discover Alex and Patricia. As they search through the abandoned section of the Underground tunnel, the detectives uncover a room full of corpses laid in bunk beds - the generations of survivors from the cave-in that occurred a century before. There they find the cannibal, bleeding profusely, and he collapses in front of them, apparently dead. The detectives return meet Alex and Patricia, who have been waiting outside the cannibal's lair, and they all head to the station platform to call in backup and a forensics crew. After they leave, the cannibal screams "Mind the doors!" revealing that he is still alive.End credits
    

Death Line


            In her first starring role in a made-for-TV movie, Cheryl Ladd is a young wife and mother, Teeny.After a move to a new house Teeny's husband Bobby (Robert Urich) is ambitious, often-absent, and upwardly mobile. It leaves her unhappy and feeling neglected.Teeny is shy and she feels uncomfortable around her husband's new co-workers and their wives. She is also new to staying with her child all day long.Her growing loneliness leads to frustrations and she takes out on her pre-school aged daughter, Robbie (the very young Nicole Eggert). Teeny's husband ignores her pleas for help and thinks that she just needs to control her anger towards Robbie.When Teeny talks to a counselor, Mary, she tries to change her life which makes Bobby feel resentful. Afraid that she'll lose her husband, Teeny stops seeing Mary and goes back to trying to deal with things as she did before.At Bobby's insistence, Teeny gets pregnant again which leads to an argument with her daughter which causes Teeny to hit Robbie.Robbie ends up in the hospital suffering from a non-permanent brain injury. Teeny convinces Bobby that they need to see a therapist together and he agrees.When Bobby won't come to the first appointment due to business, Teeny screams at Robbie. In fear that she'll hurt her daughter again, Teeny locks herself in the bathroom and takes pills in an attempt to commit suicide.Teeny survives the suicide attempt, but she has a miscarriage. Afterwards, she has to make some tough decisions concerning her life, her marriage and her child.It was one of the first television movies to depict a mother as the abuser of her child. This child abuse film, originally to have been called "A New Start," was co-produced by Cheryl Ladd's then-husband David (the son of veteran actor Alan Ladd).
    

When She Was Bad...


            Karen Cooper (Selma Blair) and Paul Coleman (Jason Lee) are about to be married. However, after his bachelor party Paul wakes up next to Becky Jackson, (Julia Stiles) a dancer at the party. Assuming they slept together Paul rushes Becky out of his apartment and hopes never to see her again. He tries to cover up the connection for the few weeks before the wedding. Unfortunately, this is impossible because Becky unexpectedly shows up around town and she turns out to be Karen's cousin. Even worse Becky's cop ex-boyfriend, with his "steroid rage problem", as she calls it in the movie, had Becky followed and photographed. Becky and Paul have to meet again to solve this problem. Further problems arise with a family and friends consistently showing up at the wrong times. Crabs, dirty underwear in the toilet tank, a horny best friend and a best man/brother that it is in love with the bride all provide for a comical week of wedding preparations.
