            Detective Sergeant Barry Harrigan Leaves Hong Kong psychologically and physically battered. He is released from a two year secondment there having killed a triad leader, who is also a police inspector. The back story is, this triad gave the orders for Harrigan's home, in Newcastle, to be torched two years earlier - a fire that killed his eleven year old daughter. The reason being Harrigan had been getting too near to Triads in Newcastle operating a Bean Shoot war and protection racket. Harrigan's wife died some years earlier of cancer leaving him to look after his daughter and he is determined to root out all those involved in the fire.With only 6 months left before his retirement he bumps up against a fastidious and pedantic acting detective inspector, Larson and the job is changing. Larson wants Harrigan to see his time out without 'rocking the boat'. The miners' strike is crippling the country, reduced to a 3 day week, and sporadic power cuts have taken their toll on urban life. Harrigan soon gets sucked in and the murder of an old con and informant of his set his natural instincts away.As he investigates a simple burglary he unearths the crime riddled estate, which was his old beat when he started as a rooky officer. The section house was closed 18 months ago and Billy, his previous sergeant, now retired, gives Harrigan the clear message that the Monkshire Estate is under the boot of a local criminal team. Harrigan finds that Cole a vicious, ugly thug and his family are the poison creating the fear. Their enforcer is Arty Dunstan, one of those arrested for the fire at Harrigan's home, but found not guilty, and Harrigan is determined to nail him. Then a young child is killed by two youths on a motor cycle and the evidence leads back to the Coles.Billy then becomes involved and is later beaten to death by Cole. Harrigan persuades Supt. Atkins that he can open up the boarded up section station on the estate to make a difference, and Larson is ordered to give him staff. Harrigan gathers his motley crew, and immediately gets them to paint the police station black. Still boarded up and semi functional, electricity and water are still on, but no phones. He paints 'Police station open' in bright red letters beside the door.Harrigan and his crew move fast to find evidence of a link between the murder of his daughter and Billy and also the fatal accident of the child. He takes the fight to the enemy and events escalate when he arrests Cole, publicly dragging him to the station, triggering a riot where they attempt to torch the station.A wave of power cuts hits the city, tying up much of the force, added to which a devious Larson leaves Harrigan and his team alone to face the riot, out of communication as their radios are now useless. The street is ablaze, shops are ransacked and screams are heard through the night. Harrigan confronts Dunston alone in the street, as his team, some injured, deal with chaos in the police station. Curtains twitch as Harrigan comes face to face with the man responsible for his daughter's death and Dunstan thinks he has won.

            A man is attacked, bundled into the boot of a car, and driven to an abandoned warehouse, where his kidnapper ties him to a chair, with a hood over his head, and starts beating him.In an office building, a smartly-dressed businessman sits at his desk in a well-furnished office, playing idly with his wedding ring, which he has removed from his finger.The businessman (Craig Conway, "the husband") travels to the warehouse, where it becomes apparent that the kidnapped man (Martin Compston, "the lover") has been having an affair with his wife, and that the husband has arranged to have the lover abducted and beaten up by "the detective" (Sean Pertwee), in order to punish him and scare him sufficiently that he will not want to have any further contact with the businessman's wife. However, the detective tells the husband that it's no good just punishing and scaring the lover, the cheating wife should also be dealt with. To this end, the detective has kidnapped the wife also, and tied her up in another room. The husband is at first angry about this, as this was not part of the plan, but ends up reluctantly agreeing with the detective that this was probably the right thing to do.The detective wheels in the lover, still tied to the chair with a bag over his head, and the husband and the detective takes turns interrogating him, insulting him and occasionally thumping him. The kidnapped man is terrified and does not understand why they are doing this to him. When the husband reveals that the lover's girlfriend is in fact the husband's wife, the lover denies all knowledge of this and says he didn't know she was married.After further beatings, the hood eventually falls from the lover's head, and he appears to have lapsed into unconsciousness. The husband and the detective leave the room and the detective tells the husband he should now go into the room where his wife is, but the detective will not accompany him, as whatever passes between husband and wife is private. He gives the husband some advice - keep the hood over her head, disguise your voice, etc - in order to further terrify and intimidate the wife.The husband enters the room where the wife is being held; like the lover she is tied to a chair, and hooded. He yells insults and threats at her, but she does not respond in any way. Finally he goes to smash her round the head with an iron bar, but first he pulls the hood from her head, only to confront a woman (Kierston Wareing) who is a complete stranger to him.She wants to know who he is, and what is going on. He wants to know who she is (and how the detective, who had boasted at being so good at his job, could have abducted the wrong woman). The "wife" is very feisty and aggressive, and alternatively screams threats at the husband, or tries to cajole him into releasing her.In another part of the warehouse, the lover, alone with the detective, reiterates that he did not know his girlfriend was married and pleads with the detective to release him. Unfortunately it only serves to send the detective into a raging temper. The lover does not understand why the detective is getting so worked up about something which is not his business.Meanwhile, the frustrated and bewildered husband is trying to make sense of a situation in which the wrong woman has been kidnapped and imprisoned. He tries to light a cigarette but his lighter won't work. The "wife" says she has a lighter in her pocket and she will get it if he will untie her. She suggests they have a smoke together and then, if he allows her to leave, she will not go to the police. But if he doesn't untie her, or tries in any way to harm her, she will go to the police when she eventually escapes [how she will do this is not explained], and tell them that the husband raped her. He says this will be impossible - the tests carried out by the police will reveal that she has not been raped. But she replies that she has had so much sex that day that she is "raw", and she will simply tell the cops that he wore a condom (as did the man with whom she had sex).The husband agrees to untie the woman, but within a few minutes she manages to escape.Back in the other room, the lover has also managed to make a bolt for freedom, but he is stopped by the detective. The husband joins them and explains what has happened, ranting at the detective that he is an idiot for having kidnapped the wrong woman. While they all yell at each other, the "wife" re-appears, with a nasty bleeding cut on her head. She confronts the detective, who is in fact her husband. It turns out that the detective suspected his OWN wife of having an affair and abducted her in order to teach her a lesson. The kidnapped man is actually her lover.The detective's wife then reveals that she has called the police. The lover panics and says he has to leave immediately; he is carrying loads of drugs and if the police discover this (as well as the other huge stash back at his flat) he'll go to prison for sure. The detective kicks him about a bit more, and scatters the drugs around, pouring a lot over the unfortunate lover. The lover shouts insults at the wife, saying that had it not been for his involvement with her, none if this would have happened.It dawns on the husband that as this is actually a situation between the detective, his wife and her lover, he himself is not involved in any of it and he proposes to leave and let the rest of them get on with it. While he and the detective argue the point, they are interrupted by a loud banging noise; the wife is beating her lover to death with an iron bar."Why did you kill him?" asks the detective. "I didn't" she replies, "you did". With this she throws the iron bar to the detective, who instinctively catches it, thus planting his fingerprints. She tells them that she is so revolted by the behaviour of both the husband and the detective - one of whom wanted to kidnap and terrorise his wife, and the other who actually did it - that she has deliberately framed them.The wife (who is bleeding profusely from the wound in her head, presumably self-inflicted in order to establish her story) crouches over the lover's dead body, pretending to be distraught, as the police arrive.
