Fat City

Sois belle et tais-toi!


            A humanoid space alien (David Bowie) plummets to planet Earth, landing in a lake in New Mexico. He drinks the water from the lake and thinks about his barren planet, where his wife and two children are dying of thirst. Frequent flashbacks by the alien show of his dying planet.Using the name Thomas Jerome Newton, the alien travels to New York City to speak to lawyer Oliver Farnsworth (Buck Henry). Farnsworth is amazed that Newton has nine basic patents. He will be able to earn $300 million within three years, but Newton tells Farnsworth that he needs more money, not explaining why. He enlists Farnsworth's help to build a great corporation, named World Enterprises. Newton explains that with World Enterprises playing fairly, the corporation would make some other corporation obsolete.Nathan Bryce (Rip Torn), a divorced Chicago chemistry professor, spends his free time seducing his young female students. He becomes fascinated with World Color's self-developing film, which can be purchased very inexpensively (free cameras are thrown in). He wonders who the reclusive owner Newton is and begins making inquiries.Using the alias 'Mr. Sussex', Newton travels to New Mexico. He checks into a local hotel where he meets Mary-Lou (Candy Clark) a maid who helps him when he becomes sick from a fast elevator ride. She becomes his constant companion and lover. She brings him a TV set and influences him to drink alcoholic beverages, partially gin. Eventually, Newton watches many television sets at once having become addicted and begins to drink gin incessantly. Still missing his family, he initiates a space program with all the money he has made in order to return to his home planet and to bring water to help his wife and children.Meanwhile, Farnsworth hires Bryce to come to New Mexico and work on the secret project space program that World Enterprises is funding. Bryce sets up his residence in a small cabin on the other side of the lake from Newton and Mary-Lou. He secretly takes X-rays of Newton and discovers that Newton's form is totally alien. Newton, who can see X-rays, confides in Bryce that he really is an alien. He says he has no intention of causing harm to Earthlings and only wants to help his dying world by sending some of Earth's water back to his planet for it to survive.Over the next year or so, the space project is taking too long. All Newton begins to do to drink and watch television. It is revealed that he has watched American TV for years on his home planet, but never guessed that it revealed nothing about the human condition. As he becomes more human, he feels his life and mission is futile.Newton's relationship with Mary-Lou begins to deteriorate when she demands more attention. He strips off his earthling guise, and she is terrified by his alien form. She can't make love to him anymore, although she continues to admit that she does love him. When Farnsworth bribes Mary-Lou to get away from Newton, she turns him down for she doesn't want money, she only wants "Tommy" as he is.Capitalist companies pressure Farnsworth to sell World Enterprises, but Farnsworth refuses. A little later, Farnsworth and his gay lover Trevor (Rick RIccardo) are killed when corporate hit-men throw them both from the window of Farnsworth's New York apartment.Newton completes the spaceship and attempts to take it on its maiden voyage amid intense press exposure. However, just before his scheduled take-off, he is seized and detained. The US government, which has apparently been told by Bryce that Newton is an alien, holds him captive in a locked luxury apartment, constructed deep within a hotel. During his stay, they keep him sedated with alcohol (to which he has become addicted) and continuously subject him to rigorous medical tests - notably one involving X-rays which causes the contact lenses he wears as part of his human disguise to permanently affix themselves to his eyes. Within that time, World Enterprises goes bankrupt. Bryce begins to work for Peters (Bernie Casey) the government agent who masterminded Newton's kidnapping.Toward the end of his years of captivity, he is visited again by Mary-Lou, who is now much older and whose looks have been ravaged by alcohol and time. They have mock-violent, playful sex that involves firing a gun with blanks, and afterwards occupy their time drinking and playing table tennis. Mary-Lou declares that she no longer loves him, while he says that he doesn't love her either. She leaves him. Eventually Newton discovers that his "prison," now derelict, is unlocked, and he leaves.Unable to return home to his planet, a broken and alcoholic Newton creates an album recording with alien messages, titled 'The Visitor', which he hopes will be broadcast via radio to his home planet (which his wife and the entire population may have already died from thirst). Bryce, who has since married Mary-Lou, buys a copy of the album and meets Newton at an outside restaurant in town. Newton is still rich and young looking despite the passage of many years. However, Newton has also fallen into depression and alcoholism and the film ends with an inebriated Newton passing out in his cafe chair.

            From her New York City high-rise office, a businesswoman screams in terror as something unseen brutally decapitates the window cleaner working outside. Upon arriving at the office, Police Detective Shepard (David Carradine) and Sergeant Powell (Richard Roundtree) struggle to explain how the man was killed. The next day, Powell investigates the apparently unrelated murder of a man whose body was meticulously skinned.Meanwhile, former convict and recovering drug addict Jimmy Quinn (Michael Moriarty) begs a group of gangsters to allow him to work as a driver in their next heist.One afternoon a day or two later, a rooftop sunbather (Bobbie Burns) is attacked and carried away by a flying creature, her blood dripping onto multiple pedestrians and causing panic in the streets below.Desperate for an honest job, Jimmy enters a bar where Shepard is having a drink, and asks to be their lounge pianist. The bartender dislikes his playing, however, and Jimmy has no choice but to help the gangsters rob a jewelry store. He calmly escapes on foot, but a truck strikes him, injuring his right leg and knocks his bag of money into the street. He limps to a payphone and telephones his lawyer to inform him that he is on his way to visit his offices for help. When he arrives at the offices in the Chrysler Building, however, the lawyer's door is locked, and Jimmy sets off an alarm, attempting to break in. To evade a security guard, he climbs a series of staircases and ladders, which lead him inside the building's spire. At the top, Jimmy discovers an enormous egg lying in a nest, before stumbling over a bloody human skeleton wearing a gold bracelet (the dead sunbather. Frightened, Jimmy sneaks downstairs and escapes the building.Meanwhile, the winged creature attacks more people and drops their body parts onto the street. Shepard speaks with a curator at the American Museum of Natural History, who tells him the about the human sacrifices made by the Aztecs to a winged serpent god called Quetzalcoatl. Believing many of the victims to be suicidal, Shepard borrows the curator's books in hopes of learning more about the ancient rituals.Jimmy returns to his girl friend, Joan (Candy Clark), and confesses about the failed theft and the dead body he discovered in the Chrysler Building.That night, a man in an Aztec mask and feathered costume slices open another man's chest; the following morning, Shepard and Powell find the body along the Hudson River with the heart carefully removed. As rumors of a monstrous bird circulate the city, Shepard speaks with a Columbia University professor about the Aztecs' sacrificial practices.One day, Jimmy is awakened in his apartment by two of the gangsters, Doyle (John Capodice) and Webb (Tony Page), knocking on his door. Jimmy flees through the fire escape, but the men chase him through the streets and accuse him of keeping the jewelry store money for himself. Insisting that the loot is safely hidden, Jimmy leads them to the spire of the Chrylser Building. The gangsters knock the security guard unconscious and follow Jimmy to the serpent's nest. Once the creature devours Doyle and Webb, Jimmy escapes, but runs into two policemen, who recognize him as the jewelry store robber and arrest him.At the police station, the commissioner informs Powell and Shepard that 43 witnesses saw a flying creature snatch a man from his rooftop swimming pool. Eavesdropping, Jimmy hears Shepard propose that the recent ritualistic murders are responsible for bringing the winged creature back to life. Later, Joan visits Jimmy in prison and urges him to reveal what he knows about the monster.Jimmy meets with the commissioner, Powell, and Shepard, telling them about the skeleton's gold bracelet, which the police realize matches the description of an item worn by the missing sunbather. In exchange for revealing the location of the nest, Jimmy demands immunity for his crimes, $1 million, and rights to all photographs of the creature, but Powell and the commissioner refuse. Shepard brings Jimmy to a cafe and coerces him into telling him the location.Sometime later, Jimmy and Shepard lead a squad of policemen to the top of the Chrysler Building, where they shoot the egg. A baby emerges from the shell, but Shepard immediately kills it. Downstairs, Shepard refuses to award Jimmy his $1 million, claiming that the reward was for information leading to the fully-grown creature, not its offspring.Meanwhile, Powell and an undercover police officer watch two men meet outside the American Museum of Natural History and follow them to a warehouse. One man begins to perform the sacrificial ritual on the other, but Powell bursts in and chases after the killer. However, the winged serpent swoops toward the building, grabs Powell in its talons, and flies over the city.In Jimmy's apartment, he and Joan break up after fighting about the $1 million reward.Back at the Chrysler Building, police open gunfire as the serpent returns to its nest, but the creature grabs multiple officers in its mouth and flings them over the side, dropping Powell in the process. Riddled with bullets, the monster weakly flies away, eventually plummeting to it's death into the street below.Jimmy takes up residence in a hotel, where a man holds him at knife point and attempts to sacrifice him to the "plumed serpent," but Jimmy refuses to recite the prayer necessary to complete the ritual. At that moment, Shepard arrives and shoots the man dead. As they leave the room, Jimmy vows to get a proper job before he reunites with Joan, who Shepard insists is waiting for him at the police station.In a desecrated building across town, another giant serpent egg begins to hatch.
    

Q: The Winged Serpent


            Rusty Regan (David Savile), former IRA- fighter and bootlegger, was in love with a Mona Grant (Diana Quick). Mona married Eddie Mars (Oliver Reed) instead, casino owner and racketeer, so Rusty married Charlotte Sternwood (Sarah Miles).Spoiled and psychic fragile Camilla Sternwood (Candy Clark), sister to Charlotte, shoots Rusty Regan who denied her advances. With help of Eddie Mars, Charlotte disposes of the body and Eddie nourishes hopes of a healthy bite in the sisters' heritage, once old man General Sternwood (James Stewart) dies. The General, of poor health, was very fond of his son- in- law Rusty.
To avoid Charlotte or Eddie beeing suspected by the police, they spread rumour that Rusty left with Eddie Mars' wife.General Sternwood gets blackmailed by A. G. Geiger (John Justin) on account of Camilla. Some time earlier, Sternwood paid 5'000.- $ to Joe Brody (Edward Fox), also on account of Camilla. Sternwood hires Philip Marlowe (Robert Mitchum) to get rid of the problem.The blackmailer, Arthur Gwynn Geiger, is bisexuell and, with the fassade of an antique books store, involved in smut books and blackmailing.Owen Taylor (Martin Potter), chauffeur to the Sternwoods with a criminal record, wants to call Geiger on his machinations with Camilla, witnesses Geiger's taking nude photos of her drugged and shoots him. Takes the plate holder of the camera with him.Joe Brody, friend to Agnes Lozelle (Joan Collins), the front woman in Geiger's bookstore, was on his way to Geiger. Hears Taylor's shots, follows him and knocks him out. He takes the plate holder from him. Taylor awakenes, knocks out Brody and escapes without plate holder.
Later Taylor is found killed in a Sternwood car in the harbour. According to the trivia in the Bogart/ Bacall- Version, not even Chandler knew who killed him...Karl Lundgren (Simon Fisher- Turner), Geiger's lover from his bookstore, comes to the appartment while Marlowe took the drugged Camilla to the Sternwood place. He hides the body to clear out his personal belongings. Marlowe misses the body when he returns and meets Eddie at Geiger's. Later, Lundgren, probably bitten by remorse, comes back, takes Geiger's body out of his hiding place and lays him out in state in his bed.Brody snaps the inventory of Geiger's smut library to run his own business. Marlowe gets at him and Agnes. Camilla appears and tries to shoot Brody; but Marlowe takes her gun. Brody is shot by Lundgren who thinks Brody shot Geiger. Lundgren is later turned over to the police by Marlowe.Earlier, Agnes and Brody saw Mona and Lash Canino (Richard Boome), paid killer for Eddie, by chance and followed them to their hiding place. Agnes wants to sell this information to Marlowe through Harry Jones (Colin Blakely), who gets killed by Canino in the process.
Marlowe gets the information of Monas whereabouts. The place is Art Huck's garage, a hot car drop. Marlowe is done in by Huck and Canino. When these two leave, he is guarded by Mona. Marlowe is able to rouse suspicions in her about Eddie, so she lets Marlowe escape.
Marlowe thinks getting oberpowered by Huck and Canino and released by Mona was a prearranged thing.
Marlowe kills Canino in a shootout.General Sternwood asks Marlowe to look for the whereabouts of Rusty. On his way out he runs into Camilla and gives her her gun back. She wants shooting lessons from him. Marlowe had - unknown to her - loaded the guns with blanks which saved his life: She tries to shoot him because he refused Camilla earlier as Rusty did. Camilla is not turned over to the police, Marlowe tells Charlotte to bring her in a mental hospital.
    

The Big Sleep


            In this sequal to American Graffiti, set over the four consecutive New Year's Eve's from 1964 to 1967 depicts scenes from each of these years, intertwined concurrently with one another as though events happen simultaneously. The audience is protected from confusion by the conceit of a distinct cinematic style for each section.Northern California, New Years Eve, 1964. John Milner (Paul LeMat) is now a drag racer. He and his fellow competitors are racing each other for the right to race against the car made by a national racing team known as "The Factory". He gets to meet his old school friends Steve Bolander (Ron Howard) and Laurie Henderson (Cindy Williams) whom are now married and Laurie is nine months pregnant and expecting twins. Terry 'The Toad' Fields (Charles Martin Smith) also turns up having joined the U.S. Marines and whom is with his fiancee Debbie Dunham (Candy Clark). John also meets Carol (Mackenzie Phillips) whom has dropped out of high school and is now a hippie drifting around the country in defiance of her parental rules. While John deals with his manager wanting him to win the upcoming championship after he loses his latest match. But John has other complications when Teensa (Mary Kate Place) a former high school girlfriend, leaves behind a non-English speaking foreign exchange student named Eva (Anna Bjorn) whom is from Iceland and John attempts to woo her despite the language barrier.South Vietnam, New Years Eve, 1965. (Note: all of these sequences are shot hand-held on grainy super 16 mm film designed to resemble war reporters' footage.) Terry Fields is serving his tour of duty and sets out trying to wound himself so he can get sent home and be reunited with Debbie, but had a lot of bad luck wanting to do so. After an attempt to shoot himself causes an all-out artillery and airstrike against his location, he deals with his commanding officer, the pompous Major Creech, whom is trying to impress a visiting U.S. Senator both of whom appear indifferent to the troop's living conditions and low morale caused by frequent enemy ambushes and harassing attacks. Terry is partnered with Little Joe Young (Bo Hopkins) the former gang leader of the Pharaohs back home whom deal with a naive and newbie helicopter pilot who seems eager for action, but soon realizes the brutality of the war.San Francisco, California. New Years Eve, 1966. (Note: these sequences echo the movie of Woodstock using split screens and multiple angles of the same event simultaneously on screen.) Free-spirited Debbie "Deb" Dunham has turned from drinking Old Harper whisky to smoking marijuana and has given up her platinum blonde persona for a hippie/groupie persona and is now living in a commune with several other hippies including Carol, who has renamed herself 'Rainbow'. Deb and her boyfriend are pulled over in their car where he gets arrested for marijuana posession by a motorcycle cop whom is former drag racer Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford, in an uncredited cameo). As Deb sets about to get bail for her boyfriend, she embarks on a strange surreal acid-induced journey through the city from the strip club where she formerly worked, to the commune, and to a gun-tooting pimp to get the money. As soon as Deb posts her boyfriend's bail, she, Rainbow, and another hippie, named Moonflower, set out to get access to a strange country-western band whom Deb joins on her mystical journey of self discovery.Modesto, California, New Years Eve, 1967. Steve and Laurie Bolander deal with their crumbling mariage. They have money problems, and Laurie wants to help by getting a job, which the sexist and traditional-minded Steve is absolutely against. He says that a mother's place is in the home and won't talk about it anymore. An angry Laurie storms out and goes to her younger brother Andy's apartment. (Note: Laurie's twin brother Curt is said to be living in Canada as a draft dodger). Andy lures Laurie to an anti-war demonstration at a local college campus. Steve sets out to find Lauire and he too gets caught up in the protest which leads into a full-out riot. (Note: these sequences attempt to memorialize the late 1960s with the scenes that recreate the sense and style with references to Haight-Ashbury, the campus peace movement, the beginnings of the modern woman's liberation movement and the accompanying social revolt.) One character burned his draft card triggering the rioting... showing a younger audience what so many Americans had done on the television news ten years before the movie's release. More scenes afterwords show both Steve and Laurie's reactions to the police brutality on the campus demonstrations with billy clubs during the protest.In 1964, John beats everyone, but wrecks his car in the last race. With only a few minutes to make repairs, all of the other teams help John and his team make the repairs and get to the starting line before having to forfeit. He beats the Factory car, and is told by their owner that he has what it takes to go pro. Also, with the help of a groundskeeper acting as a translator for Eva, he managed to tell her how he feels towards her before she leaves. The segment ends with John driving his trademark yellow Deuce at night along a lonely highway toward another vehicle's headlights, and is never seen going further... hinting that the crash was in that vicinity.In 1965, when Terry and Joe's chopper is shot down behind enemy lines and Joe ends up dead from a sniper's bullet to his chest, Terry and the pilot Lance, are rescued, but Terry becomes alinated with Major Creech who downplays the events to please the visiting Senator. Later that night, the Creech is cutting a cake made for him and his officers that was presented by Terry. Terry runs to the latrine he is assigned to clean when the cake is cut. Instead of the cake blowing up (as the viewer is led to believe would happen), the latrine blows up.Terry fakes his death in a latrine explosion in which he is declared missing in action. In a gag sequence, the feecies from the latrine rain on top of both Major Creech and the Senator who angrily declares, "this is a filthy war!" In the final scene, Lance meets with Terry who gives him the supplies he needs as Terry sets off to hide out in Europe, free from his war duty, but thus never return to the USA (It is never revealed what happened to Terry's fate afterwards if he really did escape from Vietnam).In 1966, Deb goes to a local band to see if they will give her boyfriend a tryout. Newt (Scott Glenn), the leader of the group, is reluctant to do so, but Debbie, Rainbow, and Moonflower tag along to their next gig at a country bar in order to keep convincing Newt. He finally does, but he also begins falling for her. At the gig, Newt puts Debbie in the band as a tambourine player. While performing, she sees her boyfriend at the club dancing erotically with another woman. Debbie jumps off the stage and confronts him. The confrontation eventually leads to a huge bar fight. At the end of the night, Debbie has dumped her boyfriend and is asked to join the band permanently, which he does. She and Newt also begin a relationship.In 1967, Steve and Laurie and all their friends are arrested. When the police begin to abuse Laurie, Steve loses it and begins punching out the cops. He is quickly joined by all of the other arrested protesters and Steve, Laurie, Andy and his girlfriend escape custody. Back home, Steve tells Laurie that he has changed his mind and she can get a job.As with the first American Graffiti movie, the audience is given a last still images of the main cast and what became of them:-John Milner was killed by a drunk driver in December 1964.-Terry Fields was reported missing in action near An Loc in December 1965.-Steve Bolander is an insurance agent in Modesto, California.-Debbie Dunham is a country western singer living in Oklahoma.

Cold Moon


            After exposing a pair of con artists with his partner Melanie (Candy Clark) in the infamous 112 Ocean Avenue house in Amityville, Long Island, New York, recently divorced Reveal magazine employee John Baxter (Tony Roberts) purchases the haunted house after being persuaded to by real estate agent Clifford Sanders (John Harkins). While preparing the house for John, Clifford goes into it alone and, hearing footsteps in the attic, goes upstairs to investigate and is locked in the room, where he is swarmed by flies and is found dead of a presumed heart attack or stroke by John. Thinking nothing of Clifford's death, even after Melanie shows him some photos she took of the real estate agent before his death which depict him as a rotting corpse, John moves into the house and lives there, adamant that the house is normal and telling Melanie to later meet him there.While John works (and experiences elevator trouble presumably caused by the house from afar) Melanie goes to the house and makes her way inside, eventually finding the maid and is spooked; the maid leaves shortly afterward. Left alone, Melanie goes down into the basement to check the fuse box when she feels a strange breeze; frightened, she heads back upstairs when the door to the basement flies open on its own and blasts her with an Arctic gale. She is found later that night by John, cowering and hysterical against the wall.Her attempts to convince John that something is inside the house falls on deaf ears. Later, while looking over blowups of the photos of Clifford, Melanie discovers a demonic-looking face in the pictures and rushes to reach John, but crashes her car and dies when the photographs burst into flames and burn her to a charred skeleton, the car going up in flames shortly afterward. Melanie's death is ruled accidental by everyone, including John, who remains oblivious to the evil in his home.While John is away one day his daughter Susan (Lori Loughlin) and her friend Lisa (Meg Ryan) (who is obsessed with the history of the house, claiming it was built on an Indian burial ground) take some boys to the house and use a Ouija board in the attic, but stop the game when the board tells them Susan is in danger before the glass they were using smashes itself against the wall. Susan's friends assume she was playing a prank. Growing bored, Susan and the others go out in John's motorboat while Susan's mother Nancy (Tess Harper) searches the house for her daughter, who walks in the door drenched moments later. After Nancy calls out at her, Susan turns and smiles at her, then ignores Nancy and makes her way upstairs, locking herself in her room. Outside John arrives with groceries and, seeing a commotion on the docks, goes to see what is wrong and finds Susan's lifeless body being tended to, her friends telling him she fell out of the boat.When Nancy arrives at the scene John tells her what happened, causing Nancy to go into hysterics and tell him she saw Susan in the house moments ago before rushing back inside, convinced Susan is either still there or will be shortly, refusing to leave, even for Susan's funeral.After having nightmares about the old well in the basement (a supposed gateway to Hell) John, unable to deal with Nancy's delusions that Susan is still alive, consults his friend Doctor Elliot West (Robert Joy) about what he should do. West suggests that John allow him and a team of paranormal investigators to set up in the house, to help prove if Nancy actually saw something or not, which John agrees to.As Elliot, John and the team wait, Nancy sits by Susan's bed and is soon confronted by a spectral being speaking in Susan's voice, which goads her into following it into the basement, where the old well has filled with liquid. Following Nancy and the being, John and Elliot begin trying to goad whatever is in the well to reveal itself and let Susan (who they believe can come back) go. While near the well Elliot is burned and dragged into the depths by a demon and Susan's specter disappears as John and Nancy flee upstairs, telling Elliot's team to run. As the house quakes and starts coming apart, freezing on the inside, most of Elliot's team is killed by flying and exploding objects while John and Nancy and several others escape out a window just before the house blows up.While the remaining paranormal investigators flee, John and Nancy watch as the rubble of the house burns to the ground and the old well bubbles ominously. A fly is later seen emerging from it and disappears.
