            The movie starts with a scandal at the White House where the unseen and nameless The President of the USA is accused of fondling a young girl scout visiting the Oval Office just a few weeks before Election Day. Being the third party observers, we know the truth: he's guilty.Conrad Brean (Robert DeNiro), a notorious political "spin doctor" is called to a secret midnight meeting at the White House underground command bunker by Winifred Ames (Anne Heche), one of the President's many advisers, where she asks for his help to engineer a way and a means to divert the news of the scandal when it breaks in the newspapers the next day. Brean suggests creating an artificial war for television only to distract the American public and let the President get on with the job at hand... thus protecting the free world.Brean and Ames fly to Hollywood where Conrad hires brash Hollywood producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman), whom worked for Conrad several times in the past, to help fabricate this non-existent war with the selected country of Albania to divert the public with the real news about the President's extra-marital trysts. Motts is glad to help out of blind loyalty to service for his country.At an all-night gathering at Motss' Hollywood home, he assembles a team of loyal specialists whom include creative consultant Liz Butsky (Andrea Martin), country-western singer Johnny Dean (Willie Nelson), and entrepreneur Fad King (Dennis Leary) to help out fabricate the means for the "war with Albania". The next day, Motss and Brean venture to a studio back lot that Motss rents out where he hires a young, up-and-promising actress named Tracy Lime (Kirsten Dunst) to play an Albanian peasant girl carrying a CGI cat through the green-screen set up of a destroyed Albanian village. The filmed scene makes the evening news and brings up public interest in the war.However the very next day, Brean and Ames are riding in a limo when they are pulled over and detained by CIA agents led by Charles Young (William H. Macy) who confronts them with fabricating the non-existent war with Albania. Brean manages to talk the CIA agents to releasing them by insinuating that the CIA knows little about what is really going on with the world behind the scenes. Brean convinces Young that revealing the deception is against his (and the CIA's) best interests. Mr. Young releases them, but the next day, the CIA (in collusion with the President's rival candidate) leaks the story about the war in Albania being over and focusing the attention back on the President. Everyone is upset, but Motss downplays the setback by declaring "this is nothing" (the start of a running joke that gets increasingly hilarious as the movie progresses), and proposes an "Act Two" to spin another fabricated story about a secret American unit stuck behind enemy lines and the missing-in-action story about a fellow American left behind in Albania.Motss decides to invent a hero who was left behind enemy lines in Albania. Inspired by the idea that he was "discarded like an old shoe", Brean and Motss have the Pentagon provide the team with a soldier named Schumann around whom a POW narrative is constructed, complete with T-shirts, patriotic songs, and faux-grassroots demonstrations of patriotism and solidarity. As part of the hoax, Johnny Dean records a song called "Old Shoe", which is pressed onto a 78 rpm record, prematurely aged so that listeners will think it was recorded years earlier, and sent to the Library of Congress to be "found". Soon, large numbers of old pairs of shoes began appearing on phone and power lines, signs that the movement is taking hold.However, more setbacks occur when Motss and Brean suggest bringing in a candidate to impersonate their non-existent war hero as an image to the public. But at a secret midnight meeting on a airport runway, the military police arrive where they agree to release a dangerous mental patient who once served in the military because he has the same last name, "Shoe", to portray the war hero of the conflict. The military release Sgt. William "the Old Shoe" Schumann (Woody Harrelson) into their custody as Motss, Brean, and Ames fly away in a private plane through a raging thunderstorm towards Washington DC to welcome 'Old Shoe' back from Albania.However the plane crashes (off-camera) killing the pilots and stranding Motss, Brean and Ames along with the deranged Schumann in a rural part of South Dakota ("this is nothing" Motss quotes yet again). The four of them are forced to hitch a ride on a tractor from a passing farmer to a gas station to call for help. It is there when Schumann attempts to sexually assault the wife of the gas station owner which results in him getting shot dead in self defense by the owner.Despite this latest setback, (Motss again relates his quote "this is nothing") the trio return to Washington and they have the dead Schumann buried in Arlington National Cemetery as a war hero killed in the plane crash, and the funeral is broadcast all over the national news.Election Day comes and goes. The President defeats his rival Senator John Neal (Craig T. Nelson, in an uncredited cameo) and is thus re-elected president. As Motss and Brean celebrate their victory for a job well done, they watch a TV broadcast about the President's re-election campaign. Everything seems fine... until Motss sees that the media are crediting the president's election win to his tired "Don't change horses in mid stream" campaign slogan, rather than Motss's elaborate plans. Motss announces that he will call the media to "set them straight," despite Brean's warning him that he is "toying with his life." When Motss refuses to back down and walks out wanting to take the credit for the President's successful re-election, Brean very reluctantly orders (without speaking a word) to a nearby Secret Service agent to do what they have to do. Motss is seen being taken away by several agents to a waiting car.The next morning, there is a voice-over news report about Motss being found dead at his Hollywood home from an apparent "heart attack"... strongly implying that Brean and Ames and their associates had Motss killed and covered it up to prevent him from talking to the press about the truth of the fabricated war. Brean never-less goes to attend Motss' funeral anyway.In an ironic tragicomedy ending, movie ends with another news report about a violent incident in Albania by a local terrorist group.... but it is unclear whether this is a true event and that a very real war between the USA and Albania has started, or simply a continuation of the fictional war.

            The film opens on the school bus. As it drives along, it passes some road kill on the street. One of the students, Jeffery Dahmer (Ross Lynch) notices and stares at it intently. In another row, John "Derf" Backderf (Alex Wolff) is trying to draw the bus driver but is not satisfied with how it turned out. On the sidewalk, a man jogs, catching Dahmer's attention. He gets up and stands at the back of the bus and watches the jogger out of the window. The bus driver sees him and tells him to sit back down. Dahmer does so, reluctantly.Arriving home, Dahmer sees his mother, Joyce (Anne Heche) who is talking to an interior decorator that is apparently going to redo their house. The man has cerebral palsy and Dahmer begins to imitate him. Joyce tells him to stop it.Dahmer is walking down the road with a bag in his hand, when two kids on bikes come up to him and ask what he has. Dahmer tells them it is the body of a dead cat and shows them. They ask what he is going to do with it, and Dahmer replies he is going to dissolve it in acid. They don't believe him, so he says he will show them.In a shed on his family's property, we see that Dahmer has plenty of dead animals in jars. He places the cat in the jar and explains to the boys that his father is a chemist, though the acid he has is pretty weak so it will take about a month to dissolve it fully. One of the boys asks him why he does this."I like bones. They interest me," Dahmer says.The other boy calls bullshit on Dahmer's claims, saying that the jars probably have nothing but muddy water in them. Dahmer then takes one of his jars outside and smashes it on the ground, spraying acid and dissolved animal on the ground. The boys gag and flee, calling Dahmer a freak.Dahmer has dinner with his mother, his father Lionel (Dallas Roberts) and his younger brother David (Liam Koeth). The dinner is frantic, with everyone talking over each other. Dahmer tries to take a chicken leg but is told to give it to his brother, despite his preference for dark meat. Dahmer asks his father if he could get stronger acid to use and his father says he'll see what he can do. His parents ask about tennis, and Dahmer tells him he told them that ended a week ago, but that he is still in marching band. David notices that the chicken meat is red (and thus not cooked through) and his father confirms it. Joyce is less than happy, thinking they are rejecting her cooking and lays down the law:"New house rule; we eat our mistakes," Joyce says and the dinner continues.In class the following day, John makes a scene in science class and is forced to sit with Dahmer. Dahmer eyes a fetal pig in a jar.At lunch, Dahmer speaks to one of his only friends about a concert of a band they both like. A senior makes an announcement for prom, while Dahmer's friend is attacked by a bully.At home, Dahmer watches his parents fight. His mother claims she is going back to work, while his father says she just got out of a mental hospital and is in no condition to do so. David also witnesses this and Dahmer comforts him, saying their parents just fight sometimes.We see Dahmer at band practice.Afterwards, Dahmer leaves, and sees his friend, only for two bullies to attack him. The friend calls out to Dahmer, hoping to deflect attention, but Dahmer just walks away, not wanting to get hurt himself.Lionel returns home and asks David where everyone is. David tells his father that he doesn't know where his mom is and Jeffery has been in his "Lab" for hours.Lionel drags a trash can to the shed and bursts in while Dahmer is working. He starts grabbing the jars and throwing them into the trash, despite his son's protests. Lionel tells his son that enough is enough and that he needs to be more social and more active in his life. Lionel tells him he intends to destroy the shed for good. As he leaves, Dahmer sulks.At school, Dahmer is approached by Lloyd Figg (Miles Robbins) the school's drug dealer. He tries to sell Dahmer some weed. Dahmer seems open to it and searches his pockets and pulls out a bag. Figg asks about it, and Dahmer says he collects road kill but is "trying to quit." Figg says he can help him with that if he wants and says he'll see him around.Lionel lives up to his promise and tears down the shed. Dahmer digs through the wreckage and recovers a few animal bones.Rolling the bones around his hand, Dahmer sits out by the road and watches the jogger run by, watching him intently.In his room, Dahmer is confronted by his father, who apologizes for his rash behavior involving the shed. Lionel explains that he sees a lot of himself in his son, and it is the parts he doesn't like, such as his introversion. He just wants his son to be more social, to have more from life than he did. Lionel presents his son with a gift; some weights so he can work out, and maybe get a girl's attention. As his father leaves, Dahmer scoffs, and pushes the weights under his bed. Yet, we next see him doing reps, getting stronger.Dahmer is in the woods, making a rock trap, with a stick, rope, and bait. He waits for a squirrel to go underneath and pulls the rope, crushing it.Time has passed. It is now the beginning of Jeffery Dahmer's Senior Year of High School. The year is 1978.In history class, Dahmer is asked why history is important. He says he doesn't know. The teacher presses him, and Dahmer continues to say he doesn't know, eventually making up a voice to say he doesn't know, as if he was mentally retarded, getting a brief laugh from the class.In the auditorium, auditions for a play are being done. Dahmer is apparently supposed to sing. Dahmer leaves, opting out completely.Realizing he is noticed when he "spazzes out", Dahmer begins to do it in the hallway to get attention. He gets the attention of everyone in the hall, at least until the bell rings. During his latest bout of acting out, John and his friends, Neil (Tommy Nelson) and Mike (Harrison Holzer) take notice of Dahmer and find him hilarious.John decides to invite Dahmer to his friend's table. They tell him they think his little outbursts are funny and they want to make a "Dahmer fan club." Dahmer smiles, glad to be getting attention, and perhaps even friends.In the library, Dahmer begins to make noises. A teacher hears it, and proceeds to blame other students for the disturbance, never suspecting Dahmer. Later, the boys join Dahmer, spazzing out in the hallway.At home, Dahmer tries to tell his mother that he has friends coming over. Instead, he sees Joyce rifling through her bag for cigarettes and pills in a manic state. Dahmer asks why she is doing that, and that he thought she stopped taking those pills. He asks if she is going back to the doctor, but she scoffs at that, saying he just told her what to do, just like Dahmer is doing to her right now.In his room, Dahmer begins to hyperventilate; freaking out that his family is slowly falling apart.When John and Neil arrive, he shuts the door and claims his mother is sleeping and cannot be disturbed. When Neil asks if Liz, an alumnus of their high school still lives on Dahmer's street, they go there. Neil knocks on her door and pretends to be a reporter for the school paper. He then asks her how it feels to know the best years of her life are behind her. Insulted, the girl slams the door in his face. John breaks down in laughter.In class, John is drawing when a girl asks him, "Is Dahmer your muse?" John doesn't know how to respond. The girl says maybe John could draw her sometime and he agrees. Dahmer says he could draw the girl and tells her to lie down on the ground and he makes a chalk outline around her to the laughs of the class.John, Mike and Dahmer go fishing. John notes that if they happen to catch anything, they have to throw it back given its small size. Dahmer catches a fish so John gives him a knife to get it off the line and back into the water. Instead, Dahmer stabs the fish several times, cutting it open. A shocked John asks why he did that."I just wanted to see what its insides looked like," Dahmer replies.John, though horrified, just tells Dahmer to get rid of it.Later at school, John, Neil, and Mike are trying to think of an epic prank for the yearbook (as Neil takes the photos used). Dahmer speaks up and says he has an idea; that he should be placed in every club photo despite the fact he is in none of them. John and the group think it is a brilliant idea.
Dahmer is placed in every photo. While everyone smiles, he has a flat, monotone look on his face.John comes over one day to hang out with Dahmer. Unfortunately, Lionel and Joyce are fighting and take no heed that their son has a friend over. Joyce even incorrectly calls John by a different name. Dahmer is embarrassed by his parent's behavior and John quickly leaves.Dahmer continues to stalk the jogger that runs by his family's property.John works at a supermarket. One day Dahmer comes in with Mike and does his spaz routine, making noise, throwing food etc., eventually shoplifting an item when the manager tries to confront him. John later pulls the group aside, saying he almost got fired due to Dahmer's antics and notes that can no longer do Dahmer's routines in public. Dahmer agrees.As they are about to leave, Dahmer's jogger drives in. It turns out he is Dr. Matthews (Vincent Kartheiser), a local doctor who knows the parents of several of the boys as patients. Dahmer notes Dr. Matthews jogs by his house every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. John scoffs at Dahmer's attention to that detail.Dahmer goes home to see his parents fighting again. His mother has bought a car they cannot afford without his father's consent. His dad tries to talk to him but does a poor job of it and walks away. Dahmer notices his dad left a bottle of liquor and takes it. He begins to drink profusely.Later, Mike and John run into Dahmer who tells them he quit band. Figg comes up to them and shows them a knife his father had. John warns Dahmer to stay away from Figg. Dahmer ignores him and goes out into the forest one day with Figg. Figg has a revolver he has stolen from his father. He fires a round at a squirrel then spins the barrel, before putting it to his head and pulling the trigger, the chamber empty. He implores Dahmer to play a round of Russian roulette, spinning the barrel again. Dahmer refuses to do so, and for good reason. Seconds later, Figg pulls the trigger of the gun and a bullet fires.Dahmer starts arriving late to class. John notices that he is constantly drunk.Dahmer finds road kill of a possum on the road. He takes it and dissects it, examining its entrails.John shows Dahmer new drawings of him. Dahmer smiles at them.On the class trip to D.C., Dahmer is paired up with the only black guy of their class. Dahmer begins to ask questions about how different they may be inside, then stops when he realizes he is getting too weird.Despite this, Dahmer is able to get John, Mike, and Neil, and a few others into a once in a lifetime opportunity the next day. Claiming to be school reporters from their high school paper, Dahmer arranges a meeting with the aide to the Vice President. Amazingly, the group is able to cross paths with the VP getting a few minutes to talk with him. The VP asks the group what they want to major in after high school. When he gets to Dahmer, he replies, "Biology.When he gets home from the trip, Lionel is there to pick him up. Lionel tells his son that he moved out while he was gone and it was better for everyone. "It'll be amicable," he says, referring to his eventual divorce from Joyce.Joyce speaks to Dahmer asking if he wants to talk about what is happening. He says no.Dahmer goes to see Dr. Matthews, claiming to have a cold. Dr. Matthews gives him a complete physical, and says he is fine. The meeting is tense though, given Dahmer's strange obsession with him.Later, Dahmer masturbates to the memory of being touched by Dr. Matthews.Dahmer is seen striking a tree with a large stick, coming apart from the various problems in his life.Dahmer hangs out with the group, though they are largely ignoring him. When the discussion turns to best friends, Dahmer speaks up, noting, "I wish I had a best friend." John is shocked, forgetting Dahmer was even there.The next day at school, Neil begins to question their friendship with Dahmer, wondering if they are treating him badly and just using him for their own amusement. John dismisses those concerns, saying they are only having fun, and Dahmer would not put up with it, if he wasn't having enjoying himself.Dahmer continues to binge drink.The yearbook photos come in and Neil and John laugh at Dahmer being in every one. However, a teacher notices him, and literally uses a sharpie marker to blot him out of the photos.Dahmer listens to his mother argue with her divorce lawyer on how he is handling her case. "If he gets the house, I get Dave," Joyce screams.Dahmer pulls a dog into the woods and takes out a knife, intending to kill it. He doesn't go through with it, and ultimately chases the dog away.Dahmer and his brother are driven by their mother to meet with their father. However, the two get to watch their parents argue and their mother assault their father. Dahmer watches with coiled, cold anger.Dahmer paces his room, muttering to himself, inconsolable at his life falling apart. He then gets on his bed, hugging a dead body. However, this is only in his mind.Dahmer becomes even more distant with his family and friends, going deeper into his diseased mind.John, Mike, and Neil decide to do one final "Spaz" incident with Dahmer, as a means to go out with style. They get a bunch of people to chip in to pay Dahmer to do it, and a classmate to film it. Dahmer agrees to do it. On the way to the mall, he quickly downs several beers, surprising and concerning John.At the mall, Dahmer is given some more money and as he is filmed, begins to act out. He makes loud noises, flays his body around in weird contortions, follows customers, and throws plates of food inside a restaurant. The group laughs at the antics but the camera follows closely on Dahmer as we see in his face that he slowly winds down, lost in his own thoughts. He later rejoins the group who tell him he made a great performance.Dahmer waits outside the road one day with a bat, obstinately waiting for Dr. Matthews, who does not jog by. In an impotent rage, Dahmer strikes his bat against a tree until it breaks in two.Two kids are walking in the forest when they find an eviscerated dog. The high school buzzes with rumor on who did it.Prom is approaching. John, Mike, and Neil are discussing it and one of them says no one would go with Dahmer. Dahmer hears them say that. He then proceeds to convince a freshman girl, Bridget, to go with him. She says yes, on the condition that he doesn't act weird in any way. He promises to be on his best behavior.Dahmer goes to prom with Bridget. Neil notices him and brings him to John's attention, shocking the trio, which was Dahmer's intention all along. Dahmer tries to be a gentleman, and get Bridget some punch to drink. Neil comes up to him and apologizes to him for how they treated him. Dahmer takes the apology stoically. Dahmer eventually asks Bridget to dance. On the dance floor, he sees John and offers congratulations. When John asks what for, Dahmer replies that they "made it" (meaning graduating high school). John takes it awkwardly. Dahmer tells Bridget that he has to use the bathroom. Instead, he ditches her and goes to get fast food and eats it in his car alone.The last day of school ends. While everyone is excited about graduating and for the future, Dahmer leaves the school emotionless.At home, he sees his brother packing up the car. David and Joyce are going to see his grandmother, even though they will miss his graduation. Joyce claims it will be okay since his father will be there and they cannot be in the same room together. Dahmer goes inside and knocks over some furniture before falling to the ground and sobbing.Dahmer graduates. His father tells him he is proud of him and gives him a car for a graduation present.John goes to pick up his last paycheck from the supermarket. On the way home, he sees Dahmer walking home alone. He offers him a ride, which Dahmer accepts. John notices his bloody hands. Dahmer claims it is paint. John is not at ease but tries to keep the conversation normal, asking about school. Dahmer says he will be going to Ohio State, while John will be taking Art Classes in Pittsburgh.When they get to his house, Dahmer asks if he wants to hang out, but John says he has to get home. He then comments on their time with Dahmer saying they were just having fun. Dahmer seems to agree but still presses for one beer."One beer and all is forgiven," Dahmer says.John agrees, but is unnerved that all the lights in the house are out, and that Dahmer's father isn't home. As he walks in, Dahmer walks up real close to John, creeping him out. John claims he has to get home and quickly moves to his car. Behind him, Dahmer walks with a bat, intending to strike him, but John gets into his car quickly. As the engine turns over, Dahmer quickly hides the bat and watches John drive off, John not realizing how close he was to a violent end.Dahmer wakes up hung-over from a night of drinking. He grabs a six pack of beer and goes off driving in his car. Driving around, he sees a man hitchhiking. Dahmer stops and asks the man if he was just leaving a local concert. The man says yes and says he was trying to head back to Akron. Dahmer offers him a beer and the opportunity to party some more. The man says sure and introduces himself as Steven Hicks and Dahmer says his name is Jeff. They drive off.Title cards state that Steven Hicks went to Dahmer's house on June 18, 1978 and was never seen again. He was Dahmer's first victim. In 1991, Jeffery Dahmer was eventually caught and confessed to the murders of 17 men.

            Set in a dark and misanthropic New York City alternate reality, the film opens showing the lives of two misanthropic women, outsider artist Ashley Miller (Anne Heche) and wealthy housewife Veronica Kim Salt (Sandra Oh). Ashley is struggling to sell her dark and apocalyptic artwork, straining her relationship with her live-in lover Lisa (Alicia Silverstone), and she is also verbally abusive to her assistant Sally (Ariel Kavoussi). Veronica, meanwhile, is an alcoholic who is treated with disdain by her husband Stanley (Damian Young), and although she loves her 17-year-old son Kip (Giullian Yao Gioioello) dearly, she carelessly mocks his drawing talent. Both women watch a political news show that reports escalating tension between the United States and the Middle East.Stanley throws a birthday party for his business partner. Lisa, who is catering the party, forces Ashley to help her. While tending the bar, Veronica comes for a drink and the two women recognize each other from college - they were once friends, until Veronica suddenly stopped speaking to Ashley for unclear reasons. Although they both try to make pleasant small talk, they quickly offend each other and descend into bitter verbal barbs. After getting drunk, Veronica is told to leave by her husband, and she runs into Ashley smoking in the stairwell. The two sling hateful insults at each other, leading to a violent fight. Ashley ends up getting the upper hand, punching Veronica multiple times in the face before leaving. Veronica, badly injured, attempts to stand up but collapses down the stairs, falling into a coma.Two years later.Veronica awakens in the hospital with no memory of her fight with Ashley. She is horrified to learn that while she was in a coma, her husband died in a car accident, her son died after joining the military following the reinstatement of the draft for the war in the Middle East, and all of her money was spent to pay for her treatment. Now broke and alone, Veronica moves in with her former housekeeper Donna (Myra Lucretia Taylor) and gets a job as a maid at a local hotel. Meanwhile, Ashley has become a famous artist after the war causes her dark paintings to become popular. She and Lisa also decide to start a family, and Ashley is successfully impregnated after they use a sperm donor; however, Ashley and Lisa's differing beliefs on how to prepare for the baby and raise it cause their relationship to once again become estranged.One day while cleaning a hotel room, Veronica finds a magazine with Ashley on the front cover, and is annoyed that her old college friend is now successful. Veronica clashes with Donna over their opinions about the war, and she is forced to move in with her mentally unstable Aunt Charlie (Amy Hill) who lives in the countryside. Before leaving New York, Veronica finds a video recording left to her by Kip, who reveals he left art school to join the army because he believed it would make Veronica proud. Veronica breaks down in tears. Later, a drunk Veronica goes to the opening of Ashley's new gallery. When she sees a painting depicting her own bloodied face, Veronica suddenly remembers their fight and realizes Ashley is the reason she lost everything. Veronica goes into a rage and begins destroying the paintings, and Ashley is shocked to see her when she tries to stop her. Veronica punches Ashley and runs off with the painting of her face. Ashley runs after her into a construction site, where the two begin brutally beating each other with various tools. Veronica manages to overpower Ashley and hits her over the head several times with a wrench. Satisfied with her revenge, Veronica stumbles away. Ashley attempts to stand up, but a cinder block falls and hits her in the head, and she falls into a coma.Another two years later.Ashley awakens in the hospital and discovers that she lost her baby during the coma, Lisa has left her to begin a family with a man, and she is completely broke after all of her paintings were sold to pay her hospital bills. The United States has won the war on terror and completely westernized the Middle East, meaning that her dark art style has suddenly lost all popularity. Sally, meanwhile, has become immensely famous and wealthy after her comics about happy blue bunnies became popular after the end of the war. Ashley is now forced to work for her former assistant and attempts to begin painting again, only to find she is physically unable to do so because of her injuries, meaning her art career is ruined forever. Ashley has lost everything.... just as Veronica did.One night, Ashley asks Sally why she is being nice to her, and Sally unapologetically admits that she enjoys seeing Ashley so miserable because of the cruel treatment she received while working for her. Enraged, Ashley begins destroying the few possessions she has left, only to discover a bus ticket to Pennsylvania. Ashley realizes that the bus ticket belongs to Veronica. During the last two years, Veronica has been caring for her Aunt Charlie out in the middle of the woods, and has come to enjoy living away from the rest of the evil and misanthropic world. Veronica is surprised when Ashley suddenly appears at her home. Ashley blames Veronica for her misery, and intends to "destroy" her. Veronica calmly offers to make her breakfast beforehand, and Ashley reluctantly accepts.While the two women eat, they discover that they have some things in common - they both hated the war with the Middle East, but didn't let that hate stop them from profiting off of it, and both of them deeply miss their lost children. Veronica shows Ashley the camera full of recordings made by Kip while he was deployed, and confesses that watching the clips makes her feel like her son is still with her, and has helped her overcome her anger and sadness towards Ashley. Ashley is moved, and for a moment it seems as though the two will be able to reconcile. However, Ashley accidentally spills her coffee onto the camera, frying it. Veronica freaks out, revealing she never backed up the files on the camera, and blames Ashley for destroying it. Ashley gets mad and calls Veronica an idiot. The two begin fighting for the third time, taking their brawl from the house and into the woods. The fight starts out just as brutal as their previous fights, but it soon loses all passion, and the two women end up just sitting on the ground punching each other over and over again as they both break down sobbing.In the final shot, the delusional and dazed Aunt Charlie watches the two fight from the window. The video camera suddenly reboots, revealing it wasn't broken after all, and showing that all of Ashley and Veronica's fighting is completely pointless.

            It's the 4th of July, 1996 and four high school seniors, Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), her boyfriend Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr), Julie's best friend Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her boyfriend Barry (Ryan Phillippee) decide to have some fun on their last summer as kids. So they party and get drunk and go to an isolated beach by their town. While on the beach, they discuss their futures beyond their small town, as well as discuss an urban legend regarding a young couple who find a hook attached to their car door. Since Ray is the only one of them that is sober, he is tasked with driving them back home. The ride soon gets out of control when Barry spills alcohol in the car, distracting Ray, who accidentally hits a random stranger on the road.The incident soon turns ugly when the group begin to argue over what happened. The police won't believe it as an accident, since there's alcohol spilled in the car, and the car belongs to Barry. The situation grows worse when a vehicle appears in the distance. This turns out to be another local teenager, named Max (Johnny Galecki). Julie distracts him by saying they just had car trouble, and he drives on.Once he's gone, the talk turns to disposing of the body to hide what happened. Julie feels that they should tell what they did but Barry, drunk and in a violently-upset rage, demands that no one be told, with Helen taking Barry's side. They take it down to the nearby docks and dump the body in the water, with Barry making everyone swear to take the secret to their graves.One year later and now a freshman in college, Julie goes home for the summer. While at home, her Mom gives her a letter that was received, but it has no return address and is not postmarked. Inside, she finds a folded piece of paper with a message: "I Know What You Did Last Summer!"Panicked over their secret having gotten out, Julie goes to Helen's sister Elsa (Bridgette Wilson), to inquire for Helen's number in New York. However, Elsa soon reveals that Helen went to college in New York and then came back, now working in their family's store.They then go to see Barry. Barry claims that no one can know, and as the three discuss that fateful night, Barry recalls how Max drove by, and he was the only person there that night. Barry immediately suspects him, and the three head down to the nearby docks. Barry claims he'll 'talk' to Max in private, but Barry gets carried away, threatening Max with an ice pick, telling him to leave them alone, even though Max claims he has no idea what Barry is talking about.While down at the docks, Julie finds Ray working off a fishing boat down there. He tries to patch things up regarding their now-broken relationship, but she runs off.Back inside Max's workplace, unseen by anyone, Max is killed when an unseen person uses the ice pick that Barry had threatened Max with.Later that evening, Barry goes to a local gym to workout. In the locker room, he hears a sound. Looking around the locker room, Barry finds nothing until he returns to his locker. He soon finds a Polaroid photo of his BMW, with a message written on the back: "I Know." Barry also finds that his jacket is gone. Rushing out of the locker room, Barry see his car turn on, and back off down the road. Barry gives chase, only to have the driver attempt to run him down. The driver, wearing a dark fisherman's rain slicker and wielding a large ice hook, gets out of the car and stands over him.Barry ends up in the hospital, but is unable to tell the police anything about the person's identity, other than that he wore a black rain slicker, and carried an ice pick. In his hospital room, the four friends talk about what happened, with Barry still strongly against revealing what they did. Julie then reveals that she has been doing some investigating, and reveals that the name of the person they struck was David Egan. Feeling that maybe Egan survived and is staying with a local relative, Julie and Helen head out to the Egan's residence deep in the inland swamps.Julie and Helen arrive at David's house where they find David's moody older sister, Missy (Anne Heche). Missy explains that David's death devastated their family, as Julie and Helen act under the guise that their vehicle has broken down. While both of them originally think that Missy may be the killer, talking with her, they soon write her off their suspects list. However, Missy does explain that someone came after her brother had died, claiming to be his friend. When the girls ask for this person's name, Missy believes it to be 'Billy Blue'.Helen returns to her home that night, and prepares for the 4th of July parade the next morning. She does not notice the fisherman sneaking into her house through the back door, going upstairs and hiding in her bedroom closet. Waking up the next morning, she is horrified to find that someone has slashed her hair in the night, and written 'Soon' on her vanity mirror.Helen then calls Barry and Julie to come over quickly. On her way over, Julie hears a strange sound coming from the back of her car. Upon reaching Helen's, she hears something in the trunk and opens it, to reveal Max's dead body, with crabs crawling over him! Julie rushes in to tell Barry and Helen, but when they return, the crabs and Max's body have disappeared from the trunk. Barry assumes Julie was hallucinating, but she swears she did see Max's dead body.Julie, Helen, and Barry confront Ray about the recent events, which Barry thinks that Ray is behind it. Ray strongly denies being the one and claims that whoever knows is after him too for he received a similar letter.Julie decides to revisit Missy to ask her more questions about David Egan and about the visitor 'Billy Blue', while Helen and Barry go to participate in the 4th of July parade. During the parade, Barry keeps an eye out for the killer, but notices that there are several people wearing the dark rain slickers running about. Chasing one, Barry leaves Helen on one of the parade floats. As it passes by a 2-story building, she notices a shadowy figure in a black rain slicker, reveal an ice pick in a threatening way as the float passes by.Meanwhile, Julie arrives back at Missy's house in hopes to convince her that her brother is still alive, and to secretly find out more about who the stranger called Billy Blue was. Missy tells Julie that her brother is dead, and presents her with a suicide note that was left by him which reads 'I will never forget last summer'. Julie thinks that the handwriting matches that of the note she received, and tries to convince Missy that her brother is not dead. However, Missy soon grows upset by Julie's ravings, and orders her to leave her property.At the annual Croaker Pageant, Helen is in attendance as her reign as the Croaker Queen is about to come to an end. Barry is watching from an upstairs balcony, but as the pageant goes on, Helen lets out a yell when she sees the killer pull Barry into the shadows! Rushing upstairs with a police officer, they look around but find no sign of the killer or Barry. The officer thinks Helen imagined it, and offers to take her home.On the way there, the officer cuts through an alley and finds someone working on their truck engine, which has stalled across the street. The officer gets out to investigate, only to come face-to-face with the killer, who kills the officer with the ice hook. Helen manages to break out of the police car, and rushes for her family's store, where her sister Elsa lets her in. Helen demands that Elsa lock all the doors, but before Elsa can finish the job, the killer enters through a side door and slashes her to death. The killer then stalks after Helen, chasing her out of the store, down an alley, and near a pile of used tires where she is killed steps away from the 4th of July parade that is going on.Meanwhile, Julie has returned to town does some further research into the death of David Egan. A year before the 'accident,' David and his girlfriend Susie were involved in a car crash not far from where the film's 'accident' scene occurred. David survived, but Susie died. The research mentions that Susie had a father, named Ben Willis. Julie then figures it out: They did not kill David Egan that night! Her assumption is that David had been found along the road by Ben, who killed him and disposed of the body. But before Ben could get home, the four crashed into him during their joyride that night.Julie then decides to tell Ray who is working down by the docks. She explains her theory, but he doesn't believe it. As they talk, she suddenly notices the name of the boat he works on Billy Blue! Julie panics, thinking that Ray may actually be the murderer and takes off running, only to be chased by Ray before a fisherman stops him, and puts her onto his boat.As she looks around the boat, she finds one room that contains photos and other articles about her, Helen, Barry and Ray... and realizes that she is on Ben's boat! Ben has set the boat adrift and intends to kill Julie, who leads him on a cat-and-mouse chase through the ship. Eventually, Julie winds up in an ice room to store fish, and finds the corpses of Helen and Barry.Ray manages to come to his senses, and takes a small motorboat, catching up to Ben's boat. In the end, Ray manages to use the ship's rigging to save Julie, causing Ben to lose his arm in which he carried the hook, and plummets over the side.All that is found of Ben is the severed arm with the hook in the hand. When the Police question Julie and Ray about why Ben would have wanted to kill them, they claim they have no idea.A year later, Julie is enjoying another year of college, and is getting ready to return to her hometown to see Ray. As she prepares to take a shower, her college roommate says that there was a letter left for her. Fearing the same thing as before, Julie is relieved to find that it is an invitation to a pool party.Returning to the showers, the hot water has caused the room to steam up. As Julie heads towards one shower stall, she stops upon seeing writing on one of the doors, which reads: "I still know."The last shot is Ben, crashing through the glass shower door at the camera (aka Julie), the ice pick now embedded in the stump of his missing arm.

            In Los Angeles, California, an earthquake rocks the city. Michael Roark, the director of the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) witnesses about the earthquake on the news and insists on coming to work, although he has been on vacation with his dog Max and 15-year-old daughter Kelly. Unwilling to leave Kelly and Max unsupervised, Michael calls for a babysitter to have his daughter and dog under intensive supervision in case any further happenings occur. His associate, Emmit Reese, tells Michael that the magnitude did not cause much damage.At MacArthur Park, two construction workers clash with a female police officer until a rush of yellow mustard gas ambushes one utility worker, eventually burning him to death. Michael goes to the park to see that a total of seven utility workers were burned to death by the mustard gas, and intends to shut down the subway lines that run parallel from the sewer as a precaution. The CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Stan Olber, opposes, feeling that it poses no threat to the subways. Against city regulations, Michael alongside with Gator Harris explore the sewer, where the mustard gas reacted earlier. They take samples, but a reading on Gator's meter obtains evidence that there is indeed a steam pit that releases the mustard gases. The sewer heats up, burning rats to death, and forcing Michael and Gator to leave the sewer, although they are barely able to shut a hatcher door just before the mustard gas gets to them. Once out of the sewer, Michael is desperate to recruit someone who may know about the evidence of what has been happening lately. Me meets geologist Dr. Amy Barnes, who theorizes that a volcano and magma may be forming underground. Overtime, water at the La Brea Tar Pits begins to boil, sinking an elephant statue in the process.The next morning, at around 5:15 A.M. PST, Dr. Barnes and her assistant Rachael explore the sewer, where Michael and Gator explored earlier, to take some samples. At that time, another earthquake strikes the city, twice as powerful than the previous one. In the process, a mass transit train is derailed in a subway, leaving the driver and the passengers exposed to unstable oxygen and intense heat. With Michael and Kelly venturing the streets, they witness steam sending sewer lids flying and a dangerous ash cloud flowing from the tar pits, releasing lava meteors that ignite several buildings. One lava meteor strikes a fire engine, trapping one and leaving the other one with a skull fracture. Dr. Jaye Calder, who is responsible for duties at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, tends to the downed firefighters, while Michael joins the effort, inadvertently leaving Kelly in the car.After another quake, a newly formed underground volcano begins to erupt, releasing lava that simply destroys and incinerates everything in its path. Kelly pleas for her father's help, but a lava meteor blocks her escape and burns her right leg. Michael saves Kelly and is eager to leap to safety just before his vehicle is swallowed by the lava flow. The lava flows heads into the path of the fire engine that was downed by a lava meteor previously. The trapped fireman pleas for help, only for his co-worker too late to save him as both firemen are burned to death as the fire engine is taken away. The lava reaches a propane tank trailer, triggering a massive explosion. Dr. Calder examines Kelly's burned leg and takes Kelly with her, while Michael stays behind to convince other city workers about the ensuing chaos.The lava flow reaches Stanley Avenue, burning several homes in the process, and a dog from one home narrowly escapes. Dr. Barnes, having survives the chaos in the sewer, witnesses the newly formed underground volcano, and eventually joins forces with Michael. The duo and several municipal workers push a bus in an effort to deflect the lava flow. Michael and Dr. Barnes hear the hiccups of a man, bring him to safety, until their path is blocked by a downed tree. The only way out is a ladder from a fire engine, but as too much weight and fire engulfs the ladder, it narrowly evades the lava flow, but breaks. Michael, Dr. Barnes, and the struggling man survive. The bus move is a success, directing the lava flow in a different direction. As city workers enter this war against mothernature, a mischievous black man named Kevin pleas for help by the fire chief, but seemingly harassing him in the process, police officer Terry Jasper puts Kevin in handcuffs.Stanley and his MTA team venture in the subway and find the derailed train. They pry the train door open to search for survivors on board. One MTA worker witnesses a lava flow from underneath the train, meaning that the team must remove the bodies off the train fast, but Stanley thinks that the driver is still missing, and goes to find him. He finds the driver and tries to jump out of the train, only too late to land into the lava flow. Stanley throws the driver to safety and his swallowed to death by the lava flow. Michael meets Police Lieutenant Ed Fox, who both agree and plan to stack a set of concrete barriers by the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, which creates a cul-de-sac to stop the lava in its tracks. Several people lift some of the barriers themselves, but prove to be too heavy. The arrested Kevin decides to help out, and police officer Bud McVie removes the handcuffs from him. Knowing that is tall and strong, Kevin helps the others lift the last concrete barrier to complete the lower stack. Meanwhile, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Kelly is there being treated and watching other children, while Dr. Calder continues to tend to injured patients, much to her husband Norman's displeasure. The lava is then stopped as the concrete barriers block the way. A fleet of helicopters drop high pressure water gathered from the Pacific Ocean, which subdues the volcano and cools and hardens the lava.At sunrise, those who battled against the lava flow celebrate, but Dr. Barnes predicts that the lava and magma may be forming from a vent, which means that the main eruption could occur at the end near Red Line close to Beverly Center. With only 30 minutes to spare, Michael and Dr. Barnes lower a video camera into a tunnel, which is destroyed by an incoming lava flow. With enough evidence, the duo go to the west side of city to order an evacuation. Kelly is relocated to the Hard Rock Cafe, where she tried to find a small boy named Tommy, who wandered off. As Michael and a SWAT team rig various areas with explosives, steam flows from the sewer, and another eruption occurs, sending various residents into a panicking frenzy. As Lieutenant Fox gives orders to activate the explosives, the explosives open a gap in the road and bring down a condominium building, where Gator and another officer inputted the last explosive charge and both perish in the process. As the building collapses, Michael spots Kelly and Tommy in the direct path of the downing building, but narrowly saves both of them. The lava is then directed towards the Pacific Ocean, cooled and hardened in the process. As survivors have a sigh of relief, Michael emerges from the building's wreckage with Kelly and Tommy by his side. In the aftermath, more than 100 people have died, thousands injured, and billions of dollars in damages. Michael witnesses that his dog Max has survived the chaos and explains in front of Emmit that he is on vacation after all.In the epilogue, with "I Lova L.A." by Randy Newman playing, the underground volcano is dubbed "Mount Wilshire".

Norman drives the car to a nearby swamp, pushing the car into the murky water that eventually claims it.Meanwhile, Marion's sister, LILA, visits Sam, hoping to find her sister. A detective, SAM ARBOGAST, also shows up, hired by Marion's boss to locate Marion with a minimum of fuss. Sam makes it clear he has no idea where she is, despite Marion and Arbogast's theories to the contrary.Arbogast follows Marion's trail, eventually coming across the Bates Motel, where he, too, sees a silhouette of an old woman walking behind a bedroom curtain in the old house. Arbogast interviews Norman, who is clearly nervous and obviously hiding something. Arbogast, not yet suspecting the worst, calls Lila, telling her that he thinks Norman is protecting Marion and that Arbogast intends to interview Norman's mother.Arbogast returns to the property secretly, entering the house behind the motel and climbing the stairs to Normans mothers room. Before he reaches the top, Arbogast is savagely attacked, apparently by the same old woman, stabbed to death at the bottom of the stairs. Later, Norman carries his mother down to the fruit cellar to keep her safe, chatting with her all the way down.With Lila and Sam wondering where Arbogast is, they grow curious about the Bates Motel, the detectives last stop. Sam visits the motel, but he finds out little. Later, he and Lila decide to visit SHERIFF CHAMBERS and his wife, MRS. CHAMBERS. But after laying out their suspicions, Lila and Sam are shocked to find out that Normans mother has been dead and buried for several years, found murdered in her bed with her lover. The next day, Chambers reports that he visited Norman but that everything seemed normal.Certain they can find a clue if they visit the motel themselves, Lila and Sam check in under phony names as man and wife. They get into Marions room, finding two clues: a missing shower curtain and a scrap of paper indicating that Marion subtracted an amount from four-hundred thousand dollars. It doesnt prove much, however, since Norman never denied that Marion was there.Determined to speak with Mrs. Bates herself, Lila heads for the house while Sam keeps Norman distracted in his office. Lila enters the house, searching for Mrs. Bates, moving about her empty bedroom, later Normans.When Norman realizes that Lila has gone up to the house, he struggles with Sam, knocking him unconscious and running up to the house. Lila sees him coming, hides in the stairway leading to the cellar, then decides that Mrs. Bates might be down there, after all. Lila enters the cellar, approaching Mrs. Bates, who's sitting with her back to her in a chair. Lila touches the old womans shoulder, only to find that it isnt Mrs. Bates at all, but her rotted corpse!Horrified, Lila shrieks in terror, her scream of terror joined by another scream û that of Norman, who, wearing a wig and a dress, is masquerading as his mother, wielding the same deadly knife he used to kill the others while in the same guise. Sam dashes in just in time to save Lila from the same horrible fate.At the local courthouse, Lila, Sam and Chambers await word from psychiatrist, DR. SIMON, hoping to find out the truth about Marions fate. Following a GUARD whos taking Norman a blanket, Dr. Simon enters another room, where Norman, his back to him, sits in a strange calm. But when Simon asks Norman a question, the young man answers in his mothers voice. Indeed, the battle for identities has been won - Norman has become his mother.
